  1. I really hope to tune a list that includes a full block of slayers. The models add so much character the army.

Irondrakes seem neat but I'm concerned about the short range. I guess you use them to defend an obstacle or garrison them in a building? What's the effective strategy to maximize their chances of getting shots off?

  2. I have a similar project in the oven. But I wanted infantry units. The spider riders actually look decent when mixed with classic metal forest goblins and cobbled plastic troopers. (no good bits box lacks for bones and feathers) Extra spiders can be employed for chariot duty and unit fillers.

My thought was to load up on level one shamans and let the miscasts do their worst. I think they will tend to earn their points back even if I lose most of them this way.

Since you are already proxying chariots you could totally make spider-themed versions of other goblin units. Some of my conversions-in-progress include:

Fanatic has a beehive instead of a ball and chain.

Your arachnarok kits come with a spider themed stone thrower that could easily convert to other warmachines.

    Doom diver with butterfly wings.

Squigs with extra legs and extra eyes.

  3. Yeah, the fluff indicates that inquisitor's are pretty much unique one-off characters that can look like almost anything. So you are spoiled for selection really. I'd just suggest picking something unique enough not to be confused with another unit?

If it were me I'd source it from a fantasy figure. Some fancy pants empire guy probably.

  4. I guess what I object to is (it seems to me) that very anachronistic armies are so effective. That is to say, armies that make little sense in terms of the fluff and the artwork. This spoils the immersion factor for me.

Armies where core units are taken at their minimum-legal quantity and basically do nothing of consequence during the game. Warhammer is most fun for me when the synergy of different units makes the difference. I think it should really matter how you deploy and whether you can pull off flank and rear charges. A lot of games, even friendly games feel like pure points denial. One player has a unit or character that simply won't be beaten in combat by the opponent without extraordinary dice rolling.

Have you played a game like this? The opponent has a particular unit... say ironguts with a tyrant or temple guard or chosen chaos warriors. Which you will not beat even if you pull off a combined, rear, magically enhanced charge. My contention is that stat-line advantage ought not over-rule gains acquired by in-game decisions. Of course armies vary in melee effectiveness but it should never be less than a fifty-fifty shot if you are legitimately out-playing your opponent.

  5. Hey Guys,

I'm running a table at a video game conference on saturday january 20th. Anyone want to make a bit of scratch or earn some free video games?

Basically just come with me, talk to some nerds, guard the loot against pirates and play games. Ideally you would accept store credit in compensation but we talk about it. A half day would helpful.

Please only respond if you already know me in person.

    Ryan

  6. For my money, I want something that has a full manual mode with the option of full stops. Most dslrs that I've used default to halves or quarters which is great for bracketing but sorta sucks when your trying to calculate settings in your head quickly. People that shoot a lot can probably do the mental arithmetic or rely on experienced intuition but for the experimenting amateur its a real obstacle.

I would second Nikon for overall value. Not the best and not the worst. But a good value for what you spend. Reasonably intuitive controls and menus.

  7. It's too recognizable as a unit from another list. I'd cut it into ten or fifteen pieces and mix them with bits from other sources. The plastic ork nobz for instance. Or the fantasy black orc sprue.

Something I find especially useful when kit bashing is to reorient and repurpose bits from their original source. A gun can turn into an axle or an exhaust port. Try flipping shoulderpads around in different ways. Is the size and shape of a helmet or pretty close? 40k orks are really just a repository for all the bits you were never going to use for anything else.

  8. And other weapons that have a first turn strength bonus.

Sorry if this has been covered already.

These weapons seem seriously nerfed in 8th edition with the abundance of stubborn, steadfast and otherwise nigh unbreakable units.

A pity because I think they are a neat idea. Charging cavalry and flailing wackadoos lend a dramatic touch to the melee phase. But breaking units on the charge seems to rarely happen anymore. So great weapons and halberds become the more logical choice since you will likely spend the game locked into a single combat.

Any helpful tips for making such weapons useful again?
