I know exactly the story you're talking about. The Quest for the ‘Blank Claveringi’, by Patricia Highsmith. Hitchcock edited the collection. That one really stuck with me, too. I still feel a bit uncomfortable about snails to this day.

That one seriously random connection! Now I need to look up that story.

Just got around to reading these. Really cool stuff, thanks for sharing!

"The most recent animal recorded is the cave's only snail, which has inhabited the cave for slightly more than 2 million years." I like to deliberately misread this as referring to a single snail, rather than a species 😄

When I was in Elementary school, I used to check out a book that was a collection of short horror stories that were somehow connected to Hitchock (I don't remember if he wrote them or whatnot).  The only one that sticks with me was about man menaced by a giant snail.  He hid in a tight crevice and the snail slowly crawled up the rocks, sealing him inside.

When did Mox Bellevue open, Yarb?  The one I am most familiar with is the one down in Ballard (that I never went to because it was 2.5 hours from my house on the east side).  I don't think I ever went into Mox on the east side...

It about maybe 4 years ago?  It is bigger and nicer than the Ballard one (but I was only at the Seattle one once).

Where is Mox? First time hearing about it.

Bellevue.  It is a fantastic shop.  While GG has size and selection, Mox has comfort and accommodation.  The tournament room is fantastic and easily handles any and all card and miniature games.  The game selection is solid but definitely focuses on "games that turn a profit." They also have a proven history of business savvy.

Portland is likely big enough for GG and Mox but I would definitely NOT bet against Mox.

Nah you're good. You brought it up within the context of reviews of the movies. Once we start straying into representation in cinema in general, or making assumptions about people for daring to clarify the debate, we're on RoC-y shores.

Good to know since I didn't apologize for it!

I think that Valkyrie and Shuri as a crime solving detective team would be awesome.

When you say expensive and unavailable, are we talking Pappy or going for like the blade and bow 22 yr, or like stuff made in the 1800s?

    Looks like it was Pappy.

So a few of us attend an annual whiskey party. This year there was a test.

Five unmarked bottles were tasted in random order and given tasting notes. Three bottles were decent mid shelf bourbons of similar constitution. The fourth was really expensive and unavailable. The fifth one was an experimental mixture created to simulate the fourth and much less expensive than the first three.

About ninety percent of the room picked either the fourth or fifth selection on an even split.

Has anyone done blind tasting? Do you think you can identify quality using taste alone?

Did they tell you the recipe for the mix?

  8. I have seen some complaints about the "Girl Power" scene during the final battle and have thoughts.

    1.   Calling it girl power says more about the writer than it does about the movie.

    2.  I thought it was a great way to showcase some amazing characters who happen to be female.  Plus, they are in large part the future of the franchise so a team power photo op makes sense.

    3.  I almost cried at "She's not alone." Not only was it a great call back to Infinity War, it reminded of the absence of the original strong woman Avenger.  I already miss her.

  9. Just got back so still processing.  I'm a big fan of the movies so I thought it was a great culmination.

I am REALLY glad that they didn't use Carol Danvers as a Deus Ex Machina like I feared they would.  She was in it just enough to be legit.

Great ending to Caps story arch.  Beautifully done.

I knew Stark would die but I was surprised by Black Widow.  Makes sense and it was well done but I did not see that coming.  Of course, I am surprised that more main characters didn't die.

Question: During the funeral when they were panning through the various groups of mourners, who was the teenaged boy (maybe early 20's?) standing near the back by himself scowling?

Are we rating movies, or ourselves? 😄

I liked it, but for some reason Bonnie and Clyde stories bug me in that nobody really cares to be that historically accurate. While Bonnie was part of the gang and was absolutely an accomplice to many a crime and did fire at police in a couple shootouts, there's no evidence she ever killed anyone.

Basically, they took pictures of themselves "living the gang life" where Bonnie was holding a revolver with a cigar in her mouth. When they fled a hide-out, the police found the pictures, the newspapers got a hold of them, and her reputation was cemented in history based on an ironic photograph.

For instance, the scene where she kicks a wounded cop onto his back and shoots him point blank in the face. That did happen, but she is thought to have been asleep in the back seat at the time. This was after her leg was severely burned in a car crash. She pretty much just slept and slammed painkillers from then on.

That said, the movies wouldn't be as interesting if it was Clyde and his gang committing crimes while Bonnie mostly waited in the car.

It's just one of those weird things where we've collectively decided to revise history for the sake of better storytelling.

I did like how the movie made it clear that Bonnie and Clyde we're primarily a social construct. Do we ever actually see their faces? I love how the new technology (primarily radio) is portrayed. Discovering that the car has an AM radio was like getting the newest iPhone.

Come up to Canada with us! It makes way more sense than going to the Seattle show. Think about it, you know I'm right.

I'm afraid of catching socialism. And poutine. But mostly socialism.

Satanic black metal doesn't make any sense.

What kind of musician would worship a deity who lost a fiddling contest to the very first fiddler he stumbled on in Georgia?

There's gotta be someone more musically gifted to worship.

I'm convinced that the horrible guitar tone that defines black metal is the direct result of Satan refusing to admit that he lost that fight.
