  1. Here is the problem. The amount of terrain needed in 7th is vastly inadequate 8th. The firepower that armies can put out makes line of sight terrain and absolute necessity. In 7th, all you needed was ruins for your troops as all you had to do was be in them and you were protected. Now, you have to be in them and completely out of line of sight or your forces will be decimated by the player going first on a table with no good line of sight terrain.

I say this with a lot of tournament and league running experience, having run the Guardian Cup and Boise Cup as well as weekly leagues for years. When 8th came out, I saw the devastating firepower that static Guilliman backed gunlines can dish out and absolutely wreck armies. Without enough LOS terrain, alpha strike armies and static gunlines will rule the day and make the game static and boring. Having good LOS terrain is paramount to making the game more interesting.

This rule is supposed to be a stop gap as making terrain for events is time consuming and expensive, especially making good terrain.

Squad Marking decals and gloss pin wash for definition shading done.

Now I can start the brush work.

I thought about making some more in depth articles on the stuff I've learned so far, with the decals especially but also showing this pin wash technique. What say you?

    Love to hear about this.

How about lowering the epeen and go with, every tournament I have been to, during the terrain set up/discussion part of the match. Mainly because I don't like bare tables it's a situation that has come up before. Commented on even.

Terrain discussion yes, terrain setup, no.

uh, you flipped when I wasn't expecting. If the LOS is blocked you can't shoot at the unit. The difficulty is determining if the LOS is actually blocked. Since that can end up being both a significant time waste and an argument, the less you have to rely on LOS blocking the better.

completely disagree. LOS is imperative to a good table now. If you can see across the table, it will invalidate many armies in 8th as the new deathstar will reign supreme.

The less you have to rely on "oh no, your LOS to my model is completely blocked" and have more available "my model is in terrain and gets a cover save" the better off things will be. Less arguing.

I disagree, most area type terrain is pretty pointless in 8th with how many devastating weapons players are bringing to bear, especially for vehicles and monsters.

Third. tournaments traditionally minimalize the terrain on the table to 6-8 pieces of terrain. With the new rules, unless a terrain piece can functionally give a cover save to both infantry and non infantry vehicle/monster models without the need for unnecessary discussion it shouldn't be used. Because any player that sees it will just go "ya this terrain piece may be pretty, but it has to be replaced with something that gives a cover save".

That is not necissarily true. MOst tournaments have limited terrain due to the cost and time it takes in doing such an amount for that many tables. I'm feeling that pain right now getting ready for the Boise Cup, but more events are already talking about the need for more terrain on the tables and many events already have had more terrain. Just not necessarily themed terrain, which is what I'm trying to do more of.

Also, 3d printing is great for your prototypes and originals, but depending you your print time, you may consider other duplication processes. Like using Oomoo 25 and Smothcast 300 to make rubber molds and plastic casts of your 3d printed items..  I am happy to share all I know about that!

Example:  Use Oomoo 25 to create a silicone rubber mold of your d20 holder.  3 hours total to make the mold.

Use that mold to make 6 copies of your d20 holder out of smoothcast 300 (about 15 minutes each).  (Or print 6 of them, however long that takes.)

Make a silicone mold of those 6 copies. (2.5-3 hours, because you're experienced now at making Oomoo molds)

Using Smoothcast 300, you could then turn out 6 d20 holders every 15 minutes or so, while you were in production.

I'm good at this kind of low level fabrication.  There are others around who know more about larger scale production.

    Not a bad idea...

Thanks for doing this and spreading inspiration!!!  What kind of 3d printer, if you don't mind sharing?  I'm just about to take the plunge.  (no intention towards your great ideas here though!)

I went with an Ultimaker 2+. It is pretty expensive, but I"m also now looking at a Prusa I3, which is one of the highest rated 3d printers right now.

What would be in this "set" d10 holders as well or just the d20s?

Fyi GW looks like they missed using a counting die so those d20 wound markers they were/ are selling are the standard rolling d20 and not good for marking...

I have a d20, and am hoping to have a d12 and d10, but my cad skills are limited, but it will be a good learning experience methinks.
