Requesting Help: Spec a ~$1K PC

I want to build a new PC. This beast is about to be 10 years old and is showing his age.

I only play Blizzard and Steam games so don't need a $2.5K machine.

Found a $980 build for AMD, but don't want AMD. http://blog.logicalincrements.com/2017/12/building-gaming-pc-christmas-2017-980-2250-rigs/ I know I could cheat and replace with i5-8400 (out of stock) or i5-8600K ($270) & use the Prime Z370-A https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119038 and that only bounces me up ~$200.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have locals who claim they can help, but all they're pushing for is top of the line... I get it, but I'll never game that hard at this point in life.

Hello there,

Intel core i3-8100 ... $ 130

GeForce GTX 1060 6gb ... $ 250

MSI Z370-A-Pro mobo (Intel chipset) ... $ 140

Patriot Signature Line DDR4-2400 8gb memory sticks (2x 4gb) ... $ 90

Crucial MX300 275gb SATA SSD ...  $ 80

EVGA 450B Bronze PSU ... $ 40

ATX Mid Tower case of your choosing ... $ 85

... that's only $ 815 so some left over for bells n' whistles?

Hope it helps!

Stay safe,

don

Thinking of stealing this

http://blog.logicalincrements.com/2017/10/building-pc-intel-i5-8600k-i5-8400/

And modifying it...

I play Blizzard and Steam games. So not overly high end gaming.

Got a Logitech G520 gaming mouse, looking at a new keyboard, have had the G series suggested but I know not.

Hanns g 27" monitor

Did you know resolution of that monitor.

and steam game could be anything 😝 Witcher 3 is on steam and pretty graphically demanding

Here's my first go at it, thoughts?
What tweaks?

Opinions of TLC vs MLC SSD's?
My friend freaks out at TLCs and that's why I have on this list an MLC, but totally open to other ideas.

Get the Samsung EVO 960 but in M2 format.  That motherboard has an M.2 slot,   WAYYYYYY faster read and write speeds

Also do you actually need the DVD/Bluray player?  Save some money and cut that

Why Evo 960 instead of the pro 960?

TLC vs mlc on that decision right there.

Yes, I do need a bluray player. I have an old tube TV, only way to watch movies is on my 27" monitor :D

No reason, just that the pro is more expensive vs the what your needs are.

Id seriously look at getting the 8600k, its a big boost of power even if you don't over clock.   The 2 most important things you can spend on is CPU and GPU.

@happycamper, my friend just sent me this suggestion:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TNFLWX

My biggest thought was trading MoBo w/ https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119038

Asus - ROG Strix Z370-H Gaming ATX LGA1151 Motherboard vs ASUS Prime Z370-A LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel Z370 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard

Thoughts on this build?

I would drop from 16 gigs of ram to 8 if you want to save some money. As someone who has 16 gigs and monitors the ram usage, you will rarely be using more than 4 gigs. I've only seen one game use more than 8 and that was battlefront. I would take money from that and put it into a better cpu or video card.

also I would recommend getting a third party cooler for your cpu. Doesn't need to be a $100 liquid cooling setup, just a better fan. Those stock fans are terrible, accumulate dust faster, and are loud as hell. Any third party fan will be fine as long as it isn't Chinese crap from ebay.

and if you decide to go for a new monitor in the future I would recommend getting an IPS moniter, vast improvement IMO. They are ussually not much more expensive than a normal TN panel.
