Going rate for Commissions

I know there are no "hard and fast rules" for painting commissions but I was wondering what other people charge or have paid.

 

Like line troops X amount for table top.

 

-or-

 

1 super awesome character is X amount.

Depends. I charge based on the painting level wanted (golden demon vs tabletop vs 3 colors), my skill set, and yes it does depend on the scale of the model (vehicle vs troop vs special character). Every painter has their own pricing in their head.

Back in the day, stand out models, ie named characters, were the price of the model to get a nice paint job.

Don't know if that still hold true.

 Characters are normally at least the cost of the model these days for a display level paint job. Run of the mill infantry models can run anything from about $4/5 a model up to $10 dependent on the level of detail and quality. 

 

Normally my commissions are based on the size of the model, level of detail on them and also the level of paint needed. These are all factors in determining how much time will go into the model my end to be able to price it up. 

 

In short every commission painter is different. LOL

I typically estimate how long a particular job will take me and charge based on $15 an hour. That cost doesn't change after accepting the job. If I estimated incorrectly and the job takes more time, then I get paid less per hour.

I charge $25 per hour, all in... but that's Canadian dollars, so almost peso-cheap right now!
And I'm the same as uselesswizarD - I quote a max, and track my hours.
