I dunno what a square thing is, but as part of my business account for Worldsmith Industries, PayPal gave me a card swiper and app that I can plug into my iPad. The thing you just described is usually called a "Square Reader" or "Square" for short. You might have an off-brand one, but that's what they started out being called.
