  1. Well, you got me thinking. Ive already purchased most of what I need for a more traditional list, but if I had more time for conversion work and money to make some additional purchases I would definitely take up that thrown gauntlet. I'd name it the Pequod Tribe, and it would look a little something like this (unfortunately I couldn't squeeze in another hunter on foot to join the sabretusks and have about 72pts remaining): Lords Slaughtermaster- lvl 4, Lore of the Great Maw, dispel scroll, talisman of preservation, gold sigil sword, ironcurse icon Heroes (700pts) Bruiser- BSB, gambler's armor, luckstone Hunter- stonehorn, harpoon launcher, glittering scales Hunter Core Gnoblar trappers (10)- musician Gnoblar trappers (10)- musician Gnoblar trappers (10)- musician Ogres (8) - musician, standard, ironfists Ogres (8) - musician, standard, ironfists Special Mournfang Cavalry (4) - ironfists, hvy armor, banner, musician, Dragonhide Banner Sabretusks (4) Sabretusk Sabretusk Yhetees (3) Rare Ironblaster Stonehorn - Harpoon Launcher (alternatively, it could have leadbelchers with harpoons or a great white thundertusk)
  2. Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll add a little input regarding my decisions for the above list although I remains open to suggestions for changes HeroZero- I'd like to avoid yhetees if at all possible, as the models are underwhelming and I'm on a tight budget. Also, part of my desire to field ogres was to paint this in a timely fashion while avoiding having to lug around hordes of models, so the gnoblars weren't top of my list. I'd definately consider throwing in a unit or two of trappers. I'm open to the idea of down-sizing my bull and irongut units to avoid the infamous gutstar and avoid all the flak that that entails. This may be a premature statement, but ogres seem to have only so many options for units and some of the comp systems (swedish in particular) seem to target the most viable options. Thanks for taking the time to provide an alternate list. Rudra- I think I may be mistaken about the additional hand weapon and ironfist combo, and I'll certainly be kitting out my characters for survivability MexicanNinja- Not taking the crown was my limited attempt to avoid kitting out my characters with all the expected goodies, but I may have to rethink that. Certainly going to avoid the hellheart and runemaw. As for the ironfists, I was under the impression that it counts as a shield and provides a parry save, which sounds awfully good with little to no armor save. Rudra hit the nail on the head regarding the lvl 1 caster. I like the idea of heavens for various reasons, including those stated, and the comet has always done right by me. The units of four leadbelcher are intended to clear out chaff and would allow me to direct my attention to multiple targets and not just saturate fire at one unit. I like the idea of throwing in a gorger for taking out warmachines, just need to look for an alternate model (maybe a crypt horror). Iraf- Thanks, I was kind of fond of it and I just happen to have most of the models.
  3. So it looks like I’ll be attending the OFCC and have every intent of assembling and painting an Ogre army by that time. I’ll be using this blog to keep me on task, and will do my best to provide regular updates and work in progress pics. Your encouragement is always appreciated as this will be quite an undertaking for me as I have not painted anything substantial for several years. I have included a preliminary list below as I need to get that sorted out before I can start. I have not kitted out my hero and lord choices yet, so feedback in that area would be great. Looking primarily for feedback as to how this list might rate and your general impressions. I have never played Ogres before, so any advice would be appreciated. Slaughtermaster- Lvl 4, Heavens Lore, Gruts Sickle (possibly) Bruiser- BSB Butcher- Lvl 1, Maw Lore, Dispel Scroll Iron Guts (9) – FC, Banner of discipline Bulls (8) – FC, additional hw, ironfists Leadbelchers (4) – musician Leadbelchers (4) - musician Mournfang (4) – FC, ironfists, Dragonhide banner Sabretusk Sabretusk Giant Ironblaster Stonehorn
  4. As long as there's a dance routine and a compelling story of redemption through adversity, I'm all for it. Maybe: The Ancillary Bastards, or (more high brow) Fraternitas Relictus (brotherhood of the abandoned or some such)
  5. yippee. Now we just need a cool name and home team jerseys.
  6. Thanks for the invite. I was throwing my hat in to help devo and rudra throw together a team, and one of those two gents should probably get first dibs.
  7. Turns out that the reunion isn't in September, so I'd be down to join a team. I'd like to push myself to play ogres and develop a list, but I'm wondering if the powers that be would allow for an alternate army/list in the event that I couldn't pull it off in time.
  8. I just might take you up on that offer, my father will be giving me the dates for our family reunion (slated for September) this weekend. I'll know by sunday if I'll be available to play at the OFCC or discussing the merits of john deere tractors with my simple kinfolk in North Dakota. Last time I visited I felt like kevin bacon in footloose, albeit taller and more gangly.
  9. I'll be knee deep in Styrofoam peanuts, packing tape, and buyer's remorse. I'll see you folks the following weekend.
  10. I'd definitely consider it, I just don't have a painted force or an army that I feel confident that I could paint in time. That being said, my ogres are set to arrive this week, and I plan to start working on them immediately and can get a better feel on what I can accomplish within the timeline.
  11. In the process of building my stonehorn and ironblaster. Just made my online purchase for two battalion boxes, 2 boxes of mournfang, and two finecast characters to represent my slaughtermaster and bruiser bsb. All that remains now is to intercept that package before the wife starts asking questions.
  12. I snickered at the thought of using a rewards system for painting rats. Just brought up images of a pushing a little lever to release a cheese-flavored pellet.
  13. Hi folks, I have the following for trade or sale. I am looking for PDX buyers only or those folks willing to make arrangements to pick it up. Have: Warmachine Battlefoam Bag (good condition, $160 retail) - Will take $60 ***PENDING*** Malifaux Battlefoam Bag (good condition, large tray has been plucked for larger models) - Will take $25 ***PENDING**** W: Cash-money, $80 for both Ogre Kingdoms - gnoblar trappers, plastic giant, iron blaster, gnoblars, fine cast hero/lord models, mournfang cav, possibly others High Elves- plastic white lions, plastic phoenix guard
  14. Nope, the high elves aren't going anywhere and the white lions will be showing up at some point in the future (following the sale of a kidney). I love my high elves, they're just squishy and expensive.
  15. And the winner is.....Ogres Just bought the army book. Decided that the low model count, in your face style is a nice contrast to my high elves. There's also a greater likelihood of me painting up a smaller sized army and getting it on the field. Plus, kit-bashing up some maneaters sounds like fun.
  16. They're a helluva lot better than seaguard, although comparable to elites points wise. I was taking them in small units 5-10 to take out chaff and ethereal units, which they excel at. I guess I'm just underwhelmed by any shooting which doesn't involve a cannon ball.
  17. Haven't posted for awhile, but Ive had a number of misadventures with the high elves in recent weeks. Played MurphysLawyer and Savion at game night this week, I'll do my best to recap. HE vs DoC (Savion): I was a jerk and took the banner of the world dragon on a 24 man unit of swordmasters. Between that and my archmage of death on a great eagle, my conscience is nagging me. He was fielding a giant unit of bloodletters, a bloodthirster, the hotrod cannon, and two units of khornedogs. I fielded my swordmasters, a 25 man unit of lothern seaguard, 2 boltthrowers, a white lion chariot, unit of reavers, and the aforementioned jerk on great eagle. Shooting didn't do much the entire game, leading me to believe that HE shooting, apart from boltthrowers is over-rated. I flew up my mage and proceeded to cast a boosted purple sun, which killed about 12 bloodletters. Another spell (curse of laniph?) put a wound on his bsb. The swordmaster were steadily moving up and failed a charge. He began moving up the field, one unit of dogs and the bloodthirster on my flank. I think the bloodletters failed a charge on my swordmasters at this point. His cannon took out my chariot. I’ll skip ahead a little as you may have already guessed the outcome. The bloodletters (somewhat reduced from spells and some shooting) charged in the SM front, the bloodthirster and a dog unit in the flank. Certain disaster for sure right? Essentially a 50pt banner allowed me to kill off (or pop thru combat resolution) everything of note while taking only two casualties. If its any consolation Savion, I felt a little empty inside and won’t be using this banner for some time. Win for me, but I don’t really consider it a victory (I didn’t do anything to deserve it, just showed up to the field of battle with a pretty banner). HE vs DE (MLawyer): Faced off against an MSU list consisting of 10 blackguard, 2 x units of darkriders, warlocks, kharybdiss, a chariot, 2 x bolthrowers, 10 crossbows, and a sorceress on Pegasus. He got first turn, the darkriders rode up my left flank, crossbows got into position, and sorceress and kharybdiss hid out behind some impassable terrain. Some SMs succumbed to shooting, which will be a theme in this game. My turn(s), I was overly cautious in moving up the SMs as he had a chariot and black guard within charge distance and a kharybdiss to the flank. Mage flew up and did nothing effectual. Bolthrower A took out some of his darkriders which panicked and ran off the board. Bolthrower B fired at his warlocks for two turns and didn’t do a damn thing. His turn, the SM get shot some more. They attempt a long charge to avoid further persecution and fail. The mage goes to town with a few death spells, kills nothing outright, and attempts purple sun yet again (miscast once, limited distance the second time, passes initiative tests the 3rd). My lion chariot kills off his crossbowmen than overruns into, you guessed it, the purple sun and fails his initiative test. His turn sees everything charge into the SM, which consequently run like hell. After rallying the kharybdiss gets, suffers some blows, but wins combat on the following turn and runs them down right into the seaguard. The kharybiss is joined by the cold one chariot and bye bye seaguard. At some point the archmage is killed by either spells or the remaining bolthrower. Loss Lessons learned: -Don’t depend on magic, which seems all or nothing when you have 400pts flying around. -Sword Masters, love the models, love the damage output, but tend to attract a lot of attention of the barbed flying kind. I will likely be running smaller units of these guys in the future. -Lothern sea guard, jury is still out. Lots of shooting potential, but str 3 doesn’t cut it. -Lion chariot, a staple of my lists now. Fairly durable and str5/6 attacks rock. -Banner of the world dragon, really varies by the list Im facing as my two games illustrate. As suggested, I’ll withhold from using it until large point games. I could also see more potential benefit at that level. Changes: -Phoenix guard are back in. Not necessarily killy but they present a hell of a blockade. -White lions when I have the money, nothing sadder than seeing your expensive little fellas get shot down before they see combat. -Frost phoenix.
  18. That'll be my next major HE purchase, though it may have to wait a little while. I may try to proxy a unit to see what all the hubbub is about.
  19. Thanks for the game. I'll be trying out my frosty at next game night, and the phoenix guard will be making a return after learning that my swordmasters will go down to concentrated shooting quite easily. I think HE can pull off MSU, but DE have some really great options and crossbows surpass bows by far.
  20. Alright got a buy it now price of $425, (and will include the battlefoam bag if you're local) http://www.ebay.com/itm/281287593857?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 Still open to trades for an Ogre Kingdoms or Lizardmen army, (part or whole trade), provided its composed primarily of latest ed. models.
  21. Someone had to post this: http://youtu.be/6PQ6335puOc
  22. Don't think I'll be making it this week, the infamous father-in-law short-notice dinner invitation strikes again.
  23. Hey folks, listed this lot on ebay with a starting bid of $450. No bids yet, so if you're interested in getting this for the starting price and avoid shipping costs, contact me immediately if you're local so I can remove it and get it to you. http://www.ebay.com/itm/281285216653?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
  24. Leaning towards lizardmen at this point, its the army I keep coming back to and I actually like the uniformity in this case. Giving myself til the end of the month to reach a decision, I'll likely waver back and forth, but will be making a rather extravagant (for me at least) purchase at that time. Thanks for the input folks.
