  1. The November PDX games day is scheduled for November 15, at 12pm. We're planning on having some SAGA and some Bolt Action/Disposable Heroes action, and we might just break out some armies for Lions Rampant. If you'd like to run a game, please let me know so I can arrange a table. Hope to see you there!

  2. The October PDX HMG Game Day will be Sunday, October 19, from 12pm to 6pm. (Sorry about the Sunday timing; it’s pretty much the only available day at Guardian this month.)

We’ll have some 15mm WW2 stuff for sure, and probably some SAGA going on. If you’re interested in meeting other gamers, trying out new games, or just want to check it out, come on down!

If you want to run a game, please e-mail me at jesselowe (at) gmail.com so I can update this post.

  3. So I'm organizing a historical tabletop miniatures wargames day this weekend, open to anyone interested. We’ll start at 12pm on Saturday, September 27 at Guardian Games in Portland. We’re scheduled to run until 6pm.

We will have four 6’ x 4’ tables available: two in the bar, and two in the general gaming area.

Depending on how busy Guardian is, we may be able to add more tables and/or play past 6pm. We’ll see.

So far, people have offered to run Blitzkrieg Commander II, SAGA, Five Men In Normandy, and Piquet American Revolution. If you are planning to run a game, or want to run a game, please e-mail me at jesselowe (at) gmail.com with info on when you want to start the game and if you want to be in the bar or in the general gaming area. (If you don’t get back to me, don’t worry about it. We’ll make it work.)

And if you need to know where the action is:

  4. Sure! If you don't mind playing against some bare metal, that is... The Dark Ages guys have really fallen low on the painting queue.

I've also met a couple other guys who are regular SAGA players, once every couple of weeks at Guardian. I'll see if I can find out when their next meet up is and let you know.

  5. If you're willing to drive down to the Tacoma area, there's Fix Bayonets this Saturday. Details:

  6. It's 10mm. I'm on the fence. The figures look cool, but a) I already have 15mm sci fi, and b) I was pretty disappointed with FSA 2nd edition's gameplay, so I'm definitely going to try before I buy on this one. Also, kinda got burned on Dropzone Commander, which is also 10mm sci fi; good game, but too rich for my blood and not enough players when I got into it. So... I'm going to wait and see.

(Too much good 10mm stuff coming out, dammit! I just settled on 15mm as my scale of choice!)

  7. I'm almost done with my 15mm Seleucids, so it's time to start thinking about their opposition. Of course, I can't decide these things on my own, so...

    The options, as above are:
Republican Rome: The big boy on the block. You know 'em, you love 'em.

Attalid Pergamum: A city-state in western Anatolia that was independent for a while, then allied with the Romans, then became part of the Empire (when the last king willed it to Rome)

Parthian Empire: Horse nomads who conquered Persia, until they in turn fell to the Sassanids. Gave the Romans hell for centuries.

Galatians: Gauls who settled in central Anatolia

Ptolemaic Egypt: Another Successor Kingdom, eventually fell to Caesar Augustus.

So. Put your vote down! Whichever gets the most votes by the end of September is the one I'll go with.

  8. I have to second Brother G on this one. Late war has more options, but I think mid war is more balanced. For best results, of course, you want to put lists against each other that could actually have done so... There are also only two books for mid war: Eastern Front and North Africa. It's worth getting both.

As for getting games, Thursdays have been pretty hit or miss of late. You probably should try to schedule a game through here before showing up. I have Russian and German forces; would you like a learning game this Thursday?
