  1. I'm an experienced player and referee at many events.  eblingus offers a fair, although incomplete and not entirely accurate assessment of the game.  A well-upgraded larger ship is capable of destroying a smaller ship in a single attack.  Fair enough.  Two ships of equal power will not be able "one shot" each other without some sort of lucky trickery which is not commonplace.  It's true STAW battles are usually 2 or 3 ships on a side.

In STAW tournaments more games go the 60-minute duration while trading shots and end closely (or end in a tie) THAN end after 10 minutes because one player got shot off the map in a round or two.

But what he doesn't mention is the plethora of damage cancellation and avoidance cards as upgrades too, which brings the game a richness that goes beyond Captain Skill and "who shot first".   Additionaly the number of Factions (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, etc) is huge so comparitavely there are more options in STAW than XWing.  I like both games but I feel like STAW has more strategy and complexity to it and favor it.   What XWing DOES have is better models, but WizKids in improving.  In "wave 3" out this month, the paint jobs are vastly improved over earlier ships.

  2. My earlier post was very silly.  Probably if you're being serious you should look up a Norse name you like and goin with that.

However I REALY DO think that this would be an awesome sentence to paint on the front of a Baneblade in smallish, but readable letters.

If you can read this, you've made a serious mistake.

  3. A PCS (or better yet a CCS that is not your warlord) with Melta Guns has a useful purpose as an expendable delivery system for Str 8 API1 wounds.   If I knew I was going to shoot at a Riptide, I'd prefer Plasma, but of course you don't know that, and Melta is cheaper and higher strength and more useful "all around".  Addition of the commisar and close combat elements is a waste of points IMHO.  I'm saying this as a 2.5 year guardsman player.

  4. I really like this concept.  If you are looking for "space/star camo" I think it will be hard to make black "pop" without white or bluish highlights.

Here's one thing I tried, which is to deliberately turn down the PSI of my airbrush compressor very low, to like ... 10psi.  This produces tiny dots.   The effect worked well on some of my camo cloaks for Guard snipers and might work for "stars on a carapace"?

  5. Month 6 of the "dominion war" scenario comes to a close on Mar 15, Sat, at 1pm.

Each participant will get a free prize, which this time is a "federation fighter squadron" which is a cool new mechanic and ship you canNOT but in stores.

Signup online at www.wizkidseventsystem.com or at the "Portland Attack Wing Captains" facebook group.

There will be a "Borg" scenario starting this summer and two "original series" scenarios in April and May most likely.  All offer free prizes.

  6. I'll be at the bitz swap this Sat at 1ish.

Not much to trade but do have cash.  Of possible interest to you:

    • a bunch of IG bits, figures, and tanks at deep discount
    • Star Trek Attack Wing participation prizes (that players get from tournaments): flagship cards, command tokens, etc.

Definitely interested in your single Wolf Guard with Combi-melta.

Possibly interested in: a few of the Battlemechs, a squad of Warp Spiders, Windrider Jetbikes.

  7. I have 12 rough rider models, two of which are outfitted with flamers and the rest with lances.

I've played them many times and they always make me happy to field even though they are destroyed the majority of the time before they can be even marginally useful.  If I could I would play them every game.

Rough riders represent to me all that is good about the Imperial Guard and 40k in general.  They are a totally gung-ho, utterly expendable expression of ineffective inginuity.   They are an effective charge unit against:

    • any model with Armor 3 or higher
    • that is incapable of shooting them to pieces during overwatch or before they get with charge range
    • that cannot withstand the inital "onslaught" of a dozen or two I5, AP3, Str5, WS3 attacks before pounding the horses to bits round 2

Few opposing units meet this criteria - but that's fine, right?  Because Rough Riders are so cheap and can even score objectives 1/6th of missions.

If you don't like charging, you can put two special weapons on a minimum 5 model RR squad and use them as a highly mobile flamer or melta team (with a melta bomb) capable of moving 12" before dealing medicore amounts of damage.

    Play 30.
