All.  Please be aware that as of right now, there will also be an individual 40k event running con-currently with the team event.  This is so that those that cannot meet a team event requirement, have another avenue.

Do your part to destroy COVID so you can destroy (nicely and in the spirit of the OFCC) your opponent across from you.

Hope to see you all in July.

This does not help at all. Lots of people (myself included) come to OFCC for the Team Event. It is a relaxed and fun event. Telling people that they can play in a standard smash face tournament is like telling people "Hey I know you came prepped for , and were looking forward to some boozy kickball. But we do have this UFC cage match tournament set up just in case you can't meet the kickball requirements. " This does not help.

There's thirty-one factions to choose from. Call me a Pollyanna, but I gotta believe it should be possible to find a team of five that can cover that spread...

Again, not helping. You want to know what helping looks like, this is not it.

Yes there are 31 factions listed. I have one army: Space Marines. My Team Captain has one army: Space Marines. And while I may be lucky enough to be able to afford buying the models for a new army, I don't have anything close to the time to paint a 2,000 point army. And what about all the theme teams that come every year?  They prepped all year to bring a theme.  To make such a drastic change with three months to go, I don't think is appropriate.

This is to soon of a time frame for many people to buy and paint a new army.  It also kills a lot of fluffy themes.

This sums it up. What makes the Team Event so attractive to a lot of players is the fluff aspect. Its why I show up. If given enough time, I know our community can come up with fluffy themes and armies that fit the aforementioned criteria. I think a faction limit is a fine thing to do for OFCC 2021. But not for 2020.

    Please reconsider.

Well I know there are at least two players who are normally there.  Pretre and Frowbaak.  So i imagine they will be encouraged to do it, one assumes.

My real curiosity is to see the new crop of such players.  I think they did the range justice here and they will look great on shelves, on tabletops, and just about everywhere they can be viewed or played.  but most of all:  the winners circle.  I really want to see that.  OFCC isnt exactly the best place to be noticed for that, but it would still be pretty cool if it happened.  A few Sister tournamnet wins would do my heart good, on principle alone.

That's why I'm looking forward to OFCC. I want to see the awesome themes and narratives people come up with for their forces, instead of netlisting FTW. I have had the awesome luck of playing the most awesome narrative driven games ever at OFCC. 😄

I wonder how long until GW starts sending Cease and Desist notices to The 9th Age, Kings of War, and the like....

Kings of War was around at the same time as WFB, and 9th Age uses different names for everything to avoid IP violations.

So they'll served them right after McDonald's wins a case against Burger King for having similar food.

    Yes and no.

ITC is a mission type, not an army type or attitude.

ITC *players* have both an army type and attitude.

And if anyone brings to the table something that you don't want to play against, you are always welcome to just pack up and leave. It's disappointing, but some games just don't work out.

PAX hit the nail on the head. ITC attracts a certain type of player. Most lovingly referred to as the WAAC (Win At All Costs) player. ITC is a TOURNAMENT system. The very core of the system is to run a tournament with players arriving to get onto the podium. They aren't there for a lore friendly match with a narrative goal in mind. It is matched points, go for the win.

I don't like that style of play. I prefer narrative play.

If the scenario doesn't favor me for narrative reasons. It's cool. If my side has more or less power level, that's cool too. I have made tactical decisions for my armies on the table not based on what was the best thing to win, but based on what I thought that character would do. I treat each game as a mass combat version of D&D.

So when someone tells me they are playing ITC, they are telling me that they are WAAC. And I don't have time for it. To me it is the same as if someone started telling me about the latest thing on Infowars. Full stop. Hard pass. Have a good day, sir. I SAIDGOODDAY!

Now, maybe you have enough time in your life where you can afford to go into a match knowing you are going to hate every minute of it. I don't.

You enjoy playing 40K at a competitive high level. I don't.

And while you don't like ITC, it is still a system and a community geared towards your interests. Those are not my interests.

This is a hobby. This is something I spend money on to have fun. And I will not be forced to waste what little time I have to play a competitive match for someone else's benefit.

Um...  If that's how you see it, that's how you see it.  It's unfortunate how polarizing this faux distinction seems to be.  Its poison in the water.

It's like I said:  it's stuff like this that disapoints me, but I just let the other guy pick the mission.  Hell, after reading this, Ill let him write my army too.  If thats what it takes to get a guy to sidle up to the table, then I guess i'll do that.  Man.

You might be the exception to the rule.  But in order for you to be the exception, there has to be a rule. I mean think about it. OFCC is the perfect example. It is a goofy fun event that lots of people enjoy. Lot's of people who never go to ITC events work on their armies all year for this one weekend. People come from all over the US and Canada in order to play in an event where the most coveted prize are favored opponent pins.

It doesn't enroll itself into the ITC circuit. Why not? If it did there would be a ton more player's showing up. It would like NOVA or the Guardian Cup.

Because if it did, it wouldn't be the fun goofy event anymore. Those people would be chasing the podium, and not favored opponent pins. It would be another WAAC tournament.

    Wow.  Kinda' harsh.

    No. It's not.

We're all working adults with busy lives. Our hobby is awesome, but time consuming. So it has to take a back seat to work obligations, family commitments, community engagements, etc.. So when I do make time to play a game I have to respect my time and play in a way that I will enjoy. Because of I don't find fulfillment in the hobby then what's the point?

And for me, being on the business end of a BS ITC soup army designed to put my opponent on a podium, and ruin my fun is not an example of respecting my time. That's a waste of my time; and I'm not interested in doing that anymore.

I'm here for the beer and pretzels. For the lore and laughs. I spend hours painting my army because I LOVE telling fun, funny, stories on the table top with toy soldiers.

Over the last year I've been able to make time for one full 40K match, and a handful of Kill Team matches. I had to cancel OFCC for work. So no, I don't have time to be someone's gaming punching bag.

And no, it's not harsh to say, up front, "nope not interested".

  6. Here is why I like ITC: is my opponent mentions wanting an ITC game, I pack my army back into the case and walk away.

I hate competitive 40K. It never made sense to me, especially when there are wargames out that do it better (warmahordes and malifaux come to mind).  So if someone states their intention to play an ITC groin kicker franken-army then I can save myself the time.

I'll stick with narrative play, thank you very much.

Check out my blog for a sneak peak.

I like what I'm seeing there. Although I think you might need to hold the can a bit closer to the models in order to avoid the speckled texture.

Otherwise, they are looking great. I really like the color choice for the bolter casing. It really pops and it is not a color you see in CSM armies often.

  8. Always remember to name your squads.

Mathammer is Sadhammer, but Beerhammer is Funhammer.

     Thin your paints.

    Lore for the lore God!

And remember that sometimes you have someone across from you who is just annoying the heck out of you, it's ok to just say "good game" and walk away.

If you're in the Portland area I couldn't recommend the game night at ordo enough! So much fun! I really miss those guys.

...If you're a WAAC player, then you can also try Guardian Games.

Play your army the way you want. Don't let people try and bully you into playing or painting the way they want.

Well, the Space Sharks don't have any chapter rules of their own. It's alluded to in the fluff that they're a Raven Guard successor, but nobody really knows for certain (GW likes their mystery chapters). They also really relish getting into melee and tearing things to shreds, which doesn't seem to be the RG way of doing things. They do have a predilection for being really sneaky until they get to melee range and then striking very violently and rapidly. So maybe RG, maybe not. Space Wolves, on the other hand, seem to have a lot of the elements that fit with the Charcaradon's methods of warfare; a lot of focus on melee and the speed to get there. Grey Hunters, the basic "tactical squad" equivalent, can take chainswords just because, which really seems to fit. I dunno.

I've thought about playing Space Wolves, but I'm really not interested in them. I like their rules and the way they play (at least, from what I've observed, never played with them myself), but I'm really not interested in everything having to be wolf themed or be covered in pelts and goddamn wolf tails and crap like that.

Run them as using Space Wolves rules. I wouldn't even worry about converting special units like wulfen, etc.. They are your army, and if you want to include those units in a Charcaradons army, then I say do it!

Maybe they have been SW successors this entire time, and the tearing of the galaxy in two activated their latent wolfiness? Maybe they have been hiding the mutated marines away this entire. time. Who knows?! But don't let people tell you how to model or run your army. There lies the path to sadness.

I look forward to seeing this project. 😄

  10. Well, Mox has online sales, multiple locations; and each location has a full restaurant and bar. Think of a nice brew pub with a Red Castle Games attached. They are always packed, and the magins on spirits is large. Especially when the only competition they have in that area in Portland is the GG kegorator.

In terms of square footage, GG is larger in a single location. But given that Mox has multiple locations, online sales, and are present in a much larger metro area, they likely do much more in sales that GG.

Not to mention the love Mox gets from Penny arcade and PvP.

In other words, I think Mox is going to do just fine with their expansion into Portland.

  11. So in preparing for OFCC I have been painting up my Space Marine army to OFCC standard, and building a single detachment list (as it should be). However, I have run into a slight problem: Shadowspear.

As it stands, "Old School" means single codex. Now, CSM has had a re-issue of their codex in order to include the contents of Shadowspear, but not so much with SM. GW has shown their intent to include the contents of Shadowspear into the base codices for both CSM and SM (as illustrated with the publication of a version 2 of the CSM).

Would it be fair to say that the contents of Shadowspear be considered as part of the base SM codex for the purposes of meeting the requirements of the "Old School" achievement?
