  1. I’ll never pass up a chance to talk about how awesome Wedge Antilles is... Only other person to survive Rogue Squadron’s attack on the Death Star was Luke Plotarmour Skywalker.

Denis Lawson is pretty awesome himself. In addition to being Scottish (an automatic signifier of awesomeness), he was in the lead in the phenomenal BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. He also had memorable one-off appearances in two of my favorite series: Hornblower and Death in Paradise

    Original actor?

    The one and only.

Because he’s the only pilot in the gorram universe that has two Death Star silhouettes on the side of his X-Wing. So there was no way they were going to leave him out of the final battle.

Wedge was originally going to appear in The Force Awakens but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts, so they just decided to say Wedge was there in one of the Visual Dictionary merch books. They also had him do some ADR radio chatter for Rogue One, but he doesn’t show up on screen.

  3. It’s always been my policy, when doing something like a Star Wars RPG or something where my friends and I are making up our own stories in the galaxy far, far, away to basically just say: “Okay, so everything that happened in A New Hope happened. That’s it. It’s now a month after the Battle of Yavin and you’re all sitting around in your favorite cantina...”

I figure 99.999% of the human race has seen A New Hope. The two guys who wandered out of their isolated Himalayan village and to my gaming table can binge watch it later that night... And since only one movie “counts,” we can avoid the endless Nerd Herd head-butting as geeks challenge geeks to see who knows more obscure “canon” than the other.

The Disney films have given me no reason to change my mind about this practice.

My rating and wealth levels are all jacked up in Yaktribe - I assume from too much fiddling about, adding and removing stuff. Am I going to have to just delete my gang and re-enter them?

YakTribe would be greatly improved by a “Pre-Game Mode” of some kind. Sadly, it doesn’t have one.

I just fiddled and poked until I got a gang I was happy with, printed it off, a deleted that gang. Then I made a new gang by copying all that old data in.

  5. The Grand Tour is the Amazon Prime original kinda-but-not-quite-reboot of Top Gear. I’m not much of a car guy, but the sight of stupidly expensive supercars being driven stupidly fast around race tracks appeals to my inner 8 Year Old and the luscious scenery shots of gorgeous exotic countryside vistas is great too.

But mostly I watch it to watch three old British men insult each other, play pranks on each other, insult each other, perform silly stunts, insult each other, and say the word “penis” a lot.

Imagine Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show, crosses with Jamie and Adam from The Mythbusters, with a heaping helping of The Last of the Summer Wine... and dick jokes.

Not exactly “must see” viewing, but since there’s essentially no plot and only minimal continuity, it’s great for those “nothing else to watch” moments.

  6. Haven't read the books, yet, but they're definitely on my to-do list.

Frankie Adams is Samoan, she was born and raised on Savaiʻi, the largest of the islands in the country. She moved to New Zealand as a teenager to further her acting career. The New Zealand film and television industry isn't exactly a large one, but it's a fair bit bigger than Samoa's. [Citation Needed.]

It's my understanding that the books describe Bobbie as being something like 6'6" and built like a battleship. Frankie Adams is merely 5'11" and built like a battlecruiser... I guess we'll just have to chalk that up to artistic liberties.

  7. Avasarala was pure gold the moment she showed up on screen. I've seen Aghdashloo in a bunch of other stuff and it always felt like she was being criminally under-used... Avasarala feels like the role was written expressly for her.

It took me a couple episodes to warm up to Bobbie, in hindsight, I think it's because the other members of her platoon weren't being played by the most invested of actors. However, as soon as Draper and Avasarala were in the same room together, magic happened.

    But then came this moment...

And I fell in love. Look at the sheer wonder and ecstasy on her face. Cucumbers are an incredibly water intensive vegetable to grow and contain virtually no nutritional value. Growing up on "MaHZ," Bobbie never would have had them. Maybe only read about them in old Earth books like Pride & Prejudice as some exotic rich-people food. So, yeah, this moment made me fall in love with her.

And then they followed it with this...

    And this...

Combine that with her Kiwi accent, real-life skills as a boxer and MMA fighter, and being goddamn hilarious on Twitter... Frankie Adams is officially my ideal of a perfect woman.

  8. Actual game-play is a lot simpler, most of the above stuff is only relevant for campaign play (and the dirty little secret there is that the GM does most of the work 😉 ).

Pretty much all of game play is "roll 2d6, get equal to or greater than a target number to succeed," "compare number on your character sheet to the number on his character sheet, bigger is better," and of course "compare number on your sheet labelled Move to the number of hexes on the map."

If you can play literally any other game we talk about on this forum you can learn to play BattleTech.

  9. Played WarCry for the first time on New Years Day. Enjoyed it a lot, even if I didn't quite understand everything that was going on. Probably don't have the free time to delve into the game more deeply, but it's going on my short list of games to pick up in the not to distant future. I did notice that WarCry, much like Age of Sigmar, suffers from a total lack of Bretonnia. So I decided to fix that... At first I thought I might want to rewrite the Stormcast, but they're all on foot and they all use crossbows. So unchivalrous! I also looked at the undead factions, some of the Chaos bands, etc. Then I spotted the Iondeth Deepkin. They work for the forces of Order, they have knights on flying mounts, they have common troops with bows... They're perfect!

Akhelian Ishlaen Guard and Akhelian Morrsarr Guard (the guys on the flying eels) can be represented by Bretonnian Pegasus Knights; Namarti Reavers can be represented by Bretonnian Peasant archers; and Namarti Thralls represented by Bretonnian Peasants with halberds. A few simple renamings of the faction's special abilities and presto!

    Abilities

Faction                       (Double) Impetuous Gallantry: A fighter can use the ability only if it is the first battle round. This fighter can make a bonus move action a number of inches equal to the value of this ability. (Low Tide)

Faction     Minion     (Double) Knightly Temper: Roll 1 die for each visible enemy fighter within 2" of this fighter. On a 5, allocate one damage point to the fighter being rolled for. On a 6, allocate a number of damage points to the fighter being rolled for equal to the value of this ability. (Sweeping Blow)

Faction     Agile         (Double) Volley Fire: Until the end of this fighter's activation, add one to the Attacks characteristic of attack actions made by this fighter that target an enemy fighter more than 3" away. (Storm Fire)

Faction      Leader     (Triple) Noble Disdain: A fighter can use this ability only if it is the third battle round. Add one to the Attacks and Strength characteristics of attack actions that have a Range characteristic of 3 or less made by friendly fighters while they are within 6" of this fighter. (High Tide)

Faction     Bulwark     (Triple) The Lady's Blessing: Until the end of the battle round, count each critical hit from attack actions that target this fighter as a hit instead. (Biovoltaic Barrier)

Faction     Berserker  (Quad) For the Glory and the Grail!: Allocate a number of damage points equal to the value of this ability to all visible enemy fighters within 3" of this fighter. (Biovoltaic Blast)
