  1. Just finished binge watching all four seasons of The Expanse a few days ago myself. Had never watched it, but several friends swore it was the best thing going, so I gave it. Pretty much agree with @Duckman’s take on it.

    To borrow the classification from TV Tropes, I’d call it a 3.5 on the Mohs Scale of Sci-Fi Hardness. A solid 4 in the early seasons, where the only major departure from current science and technology seems to be the really, really, really efficient Epstein Drive which isn’t FLT, but does allow travel from Earth to the Belt to take place in time spans that aren’t too boring for television... Everything else: terraforming, fusion reactors, rail guns, and so forth is mostly just a logical extrapolation on current tech.

    Season 3 Spoiler In Following Paragraph 

    The end of Season 3 kicks the show from a 3.5 to a solid 3. But that’s kind of expected once your story shifts from local political struggles to first contact with dead(?) alien civilization.

    Just throwing it out there, since it was a really neat idea. Obviously, you’re no slouch in the modeling department... 

    On the other (three) hand(s), if might not be a bad trick to have in your tool box if you add some especially large and expensive Forge World monstrosity to the list.

Years back — long before Genestealer Cultists had their own codex — I remember a design blog by a guy who made an Imperial Guard army, but took care to magnetize all the panels that had icons on them, all the command squad banners, and what not. Then he created Imperial, Chaos, and Tyranid versions of all of them.

    Grenades are treated as special type of ranged weapon. A fighter with grenades can throw one as a Shoot action. Grenades do not have a Short range, and their Long range is determined by multiplying the attacking fighter's Strength by 3.

    Grenades are always a lot more limited than other ranged weapons. As such, the Firepower dice is not rolled when attacking with a grenade. Instead, after the attack has been resolved, an Ammo check is made automatically. Grenades cannot be reloaded – once they are gone, they are gone for the entire battle.

    An Ammo check fail on a grenade launcher, however, might represent a weapon jamming or some other minor malfunction, but we can assume the wielder carries sufficient ammo for the battle and if they are able to clear the fault then they are able to reload. This is factored into the cost of the weapon.

     

    Basically, once you buy a ganger an X Grenade weapon, he’s going to start each fight with an X Grenade. But he’s far more likely to run out of ammo with it (most Grenades have a 5+ or 6+ Ammo Check) during the course of the fight. You cannot Reload them during the fight, but you get them back automatically between missions.

    Grenade Launchers can be given a Reload, which is why they’re a lot more pricey than hand grenades... Looking at it from the perspective of  a Street Judge Adeptus Arbites Palanite Enforcer krak grenades and grenade launchers are my only real option for heavy armor and melee swarms. I’ll be investing heavily in them.

  5. Corpse Grinders are an oddity, being almost exclusively melee focused in a game that generally emphasizes shootin’... But once they do get into grips, they’ll shred just about anybody.

    I feel like you can’t really do anything wrong when building their initial list (other than obviously silly stuff like not buying weapons for anyone), it’s going to be all about the player’s skill in maneuvering, keeping in cover and/or out of LoS, and maximizing your advantages in melee.

  6. I’m just repeating something I read that said J.J. Abrams said that was the intent of the scene. I make no claim to it’s validity at all...

    I sure felt like a “I always wanted to say I love you!” moment to me... Which also wouldn’t have made much sense, since those two characters spent like twelve minutes on screen together across the first two films. 🤷‍♂️

  7. Supposedly, the “something” Finn wanted to tell Rey is that he, too, was Force sensitive. How the &$%# he knew that and how the %#$& the audience was supposed to pick up on that implication I do not know...

    The Rey / Kylo romance never seemed to be reciprocal to me. I always kind of felt a bit of a longing from Kylo towards Rey, but in a creepy possessive stalker way... The only emotional towards Kylo I ever felt from Rey was odium. Until TROS* decided to strangle her with the red string.

    Still better romantic chemistry than Padme and Anakin.

    *I wonder if it was supposed to follow the same R-word of the S-word format as the last films in the other two trilogies until someone noticed that would give us ROTS...?

  8. As a general rule, I tend to prefer las-weapons of all stripes to just about anything else in Necromunda. They are the epitome of the “Boring But Practical” and in campaign-format their reliability is more valuable than the raw damage from other weapons.

    You might want to figure out how to get some Smoke Grenades into the list (although I confess, I’m not sure if they’re part of the Cult armory). The Helot Cult tends to favor short-range shootouts, Smoke Grenades can be a big boon in moving closer without getting shot-up by gangs that prefer longer ranges.

    Heavier armored opponents are also going to be tough with just las-weapons. Probably not much that can be done about that at this stage, but any opportunity to loot or barter some Krak Grenades should be taken.

  9. That’s why The Last Jedi and Rogue One are by far my favorite films of the Disney era. They gave us something new, something to be excited by, and they took risks. Even if Solo was a strictly formula heist movie with a deus ex machina ending, it was at least innovative compared to the rest of the franchise:

    A New Hope, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens, and The Rise of Skywalker all follow the same sequence: set-piece battle the heroes loose, rescue mission / fetch quest, duel between space-wizards played against backdrop battle where the rest of the heroes try to stop the big doomsday weapon.(TPM used a single battleship and TROS used a fleet of cruisers, but for  the same exact narrative purpose.)

    Let’s not even get started on the number of spin-off works that follow this formula.

    At a certain point, this stopped being a clever call-back and started being masturbatory.

  10. Had one back in the day, Woodland Scenics. Worked absolutely great for doing exactly what it was meant to... and I found it kinda “meh” in the long run.

    For model railroads or other, similar, projects where the static grass isn’t going to be touched much, it works a treat. But for a wargaming tabletop? Years of moving toy soldiers across it, rulebooks resting on it, dice scattering across it, and so forth means it all wears out and falls off after a while.

    I switched to just using a combination of regular glued-down flocking (sealed with a generous amount of matte spray) and some targeted applications of static grass tufts here and there. Bases of trees, along walls, next to ponds and puddles... any place that grass should grow thicker and where I didn’t think they’d see a lot of “traffic” from toy soldiers.

    The rulebook says that "attacks cannot be made into, out of or through" smoke. Not shooting attacks, just attacks. So you can charge though smoke to engage someone on the other side of it and fight them. However, if they are inside the smoke all you can do is charge them and engage, but not actually attack.
