It is the Neeson crutch, but I'll allow it. No fence is going to convince me he isn't a badass.

I have no doubt that if Neeson wanted to hop a fence in order to actually kick someone’s ass, he could probably do it. The man grew up a Roman Catholic in a Protestant town in Northern Ireland during the height of “The Troubles,” that’s gonna make you one tough sumbetch for life... He was also an amateur boxer as a teen winning a couple regional titles. That was decades ago, sure, but I know I would never want to get into a bar brawl against the man.

    ...

Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot four and a half stars out of five, if and only if you’re already a committed “Askewniverse” fan. Although there’s plenty of funny bits and a good story in here, most of it is probably completely impenetrable to anyone not familiar with the previous films in the Clerks series (and many films not in the series, but that share cast or crew).

Jason Mewes actually delivers some pretty good emotional beats, in addition to the typical “Snootchie Bootchies” stoner shenanigans that you expect. Harley Quinn Smith has real potential too, comic timing is a hard skill to learn and she seems to have a natural talent for it... And yet, it’s probably Ben Affleck that steals the whole movie in his single scene.

  2. Citadel Miniatures Tomb Kings have been out of print for several years now, leaving you to the mercy of the second hand market. You'll have to scour eBay and the like... Or you can go with miniatures from a different company altogether.

Mantic Games' Kings of War Undead are popular, but tend to have a more Fantasy-European vibe than the Fantasy-Egypt most people want from Undying Dynasties (Tomb Kings)

WarGods of Ægyptus is a game that no one (besides me) seems to have even heard of and no one (including me) seems to have ever played. But as the name implies, it's got quite a lot of Fantasy-Egypt stuff. The models are all pewter and some are a bit "meh," but if you look in their Undead range you might find some cool heroes. I also recommend taking a look at their Weapon Packs and Shield Packs. Just swapping out the weapons and shields of garden variety Fantasy-European skeletons might be enough to make a lot of rank and file Undying Dynasties (Tomb Kings) mooks on the cheap.

Gamezone's Royal Tumuli Guardians are all gorgeous, but probably too pricey for rank and file. Great source for Heroes that you want to stand out from the rabble though.

Mierce Miniatures also makes gorgeous models, but they're also pricey. Excellent Heroes and one of the few sources for alternative Sepulchral Stalkers / Necropolis Knights with their Khthon Gorgórars.

But probably the best thing going right now are Warlord Games' Skeleton Warriors; twenty-four to a box, with options for spears, sword-n-board, or archers, for a mere $30. They've got a very Ray Harryhausen Jason and the Argonauts look to them. A bit more Fantasy-Greece than Fantasy-Egypt, but probably close enough for most people (and if you grab some of those WarGods of Ægyptus shield packs I mentioned before you could really spice these up.) They also have a special bundle called Children of the Hydra's Teeth that gives you 90 skeletons and a very cool Necromancer for a mere $80!

Last, but not least, there's the Scarab SonsScorpio Legion and Manticores insignia sets from Pop Goes the Monkey. I bet it wouldn't be too hard to use these with the shields from the Warlord Games Skeletons (above).

Apologies to Prince, but it just occurred to me that, with some sort of essential oil dispenser or something, one could make a Raspberry Bidet.

The kind you find in a second hand store?

  4. Yeah, the Michael Bay trademark quick cut editing and shaky cam are both movie making techniques that I loathe. I give the movie a B– at best... and am probably being generous to it since it was a straight-to-Netflix release... If I had paid money to see it, I’d probably be more disappointed.

I like my Criterion Collection DVDs and art house underground avant-garde navel gazing as much as the next pretentious cinephile... But sometimes, I just want to spend a lazy weekend on the sofa drinking high fructose corn syrup, eating cold pizza, and watching things blow up. Six Underground is a big dumb action movie, but it’s a good big dumb action movie.

  5. I thought Six Underground was fun. Not great, but certainly a worthwhile way to waste a Saturday afternoon... Of course, I also kept flashing back to various Shadowrun campaigns I’ve played in over the years.

Weirdly diverse characters with wacky personalities and complicated origin stores that don’t matter much to the plot, lengthy and detailed mission plans that break down to “and then we kick in the door and start shooting” almost immediately, and sooo many bad puns.

  6. I like the idea of codices, in the abstract, as it makes it easier to create a baseline for the game as a whole (the “big black book”) and then section off the exceptions or tweaks to that baseline in distinct groups (the codices).

The problem with the codex model, of course, is when a publisher decides to have 48 codices, 15 codex supplements, 8 campaign books, and so forth.

But can GW restrain themselves to House of X books for just the core gangs, that’s the question.

  7. I’m thinking 1/4” or 1/5” PVC foam board for the lower 24” sections and 1” insulation foam board for the large 4’s on top. With internal corner “posts” made up of extra insulation foam. Some textured PVC or plexiglass sheets for the windows.

Maybe bribe someone with a 3D printer to print me some detail bitz like the street level doors and a rooftop hatch / landing pad for the Fantasticar...

But I really should slap some paint on the figures that I have and get some games played.

  8. Playing around in Sketchup, I mocked up a three-foot tall version of Four Freedoms Plaza, the headquarters of the Fantastic Four from 1986 to 1998. It's not quite as famous as the Baxter Building or Avengers Mansion and not quite as eye-catching as the MCU version of Avengers Tower... But it certainly looks undeniably "comic book" and could probably be made by me without too much difficulty.

Officially, Four Freedoms Plaza stands one-hundred stories above ground and 1,500' tall... So, obviously, this would be a great deal smaller than that.

  9. Menards One Police Plaza is modeled after the NYPD’s real One Police Plaza, but it only has four stories (five if you count the control room on the roof) compared to the real one’s fourteen stories.

The Menard’s model is 13 1/8” tall, which works out to be approximately 72’ in scale. So it’s more like a local precinct house than the city’s central headquarters... But it’s still a big, beefy building considering your only playing on a 36” x 36” map and it’s basically a 12” cube of solid plastic. (It’s also got working lights and spinning rotors on the ‘chopper!)

The World Headquarters building from Menards stands a mighty 23.5” tall which is 94’ at scale... So not exactly a “skyscraper,” but it’s certainly big enough that it’ll look impressive when Spider-Man is duking it out with Green Goblin on the roof. It’s a full 1.5” taller than Forge World’s Warlord Titan and wide enough to hide one too. Plus, it’s got a Starbucks in the lobby...
