Crazy Random Idea: Blood Bowl Roleplaying Game

Player Characters would be a rag-tag bunch of athletic misfits, in the grand tradition of sports movie cliches, who’d be the “stars” of the team and/or maybe the coaches, team medic, and so forth. NPCs would have to be recruited to fill out the roster. 

Set it in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, but don’t worry too much about canonical whatevers and serious whozits. Embrace the silly puns and satirical violence of Blood Bowl. Maybe go full Eighties Sports Movie with it:

“The Orphanage of St. Ditka, run by the church of Shallya the goddess of healing, was always a bit of an oddity. Willing to take in human children from across the Old World, as well as lost Elves, Halflings, Dwarfs, and other stranger things. Despite the diverse and unusual nature of the place, the raggamuffin orphans that grew up there all loved the place.”

“But now, the local elector-count, Graff von Greedyguy, has decided that he needs the land the orphanage is on to build a new hotel-casino-brothel. Better tax revenue.”

“Faced with only a few months time to raise the gold needed to save their beloved home, a band of scrappy (former) orphans sets out to battle their way to the top of the Blood Bowl League.”

Simple Ranged Weapons Cost Damage Weight Properties
Blood Bowl Ball 5 sp 1d4 piercing 1 lb. Catch!, Finesse, Light, Thrown (range 20/60)



Catch!: The target of an attack from a Blood Bowl Ball may make a DC 15 Strength (Athletics) check to catch the ball. A successful catch halves the damage inflicted, to a minimum of 1 HP.

Finesse: When making an attack with a finesse weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls. 

Light: A light weapon is small and easy to handle, making it ideal for use when fighting with two weapons. 

Thrown: If a weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon to make a ranged attack. If the weapon is a melee weapon, you use the same ability modifier for that attack roll and damage roll that you would use for a melee attack with the weapon. Therefore, when you throw a Blood Bowl Ball, you can use either your Strength or your Dexterity, since the ball has the finesse property.

Medium Armor Cost Armor Class (AC) Strength Stealth Weight
Standard Blood Bowl Armor 25 gp 12 + Dex modifier (Max 2) -- -- 15 lb.

Standard Blood Bowl Armor: Essentially, a modified suit of armor that consists of a fitted metal breastplate worn with supple leather. Although it leaves the legs and arms relatively unprotected, this gear provides good protection for the wearer's vital organs while leaving the wearer relatively unencumbered. Not every team wears this type of armor and their are no rules requiring its use, many Elf and Amazon teams forgo the use of armor entirely and both the Norse and Bretonnians are known to play in full plate!


Equipment Packs

The starting equipment you get from your class includes a collection of useful adventuring gear, put together in a pack. In a Blood Bowl RPG campaign, every character may substitute one of their class's pack choices with an Athlete's Pack. If you are buying your starting equipment, you can purchase a pack for the price shown, which might be cheaper than buying the items individually. 

Athlete's Pack (10 gp): Includes a backpack, a healer's kit, a bedroll, two sets of common clothes (uniforms), a signal whistle, a mess kit, five days of rations, a waterskin, and a copy of the Official Blood Bowl Rulebook (useful as toilet paper).
