Guest
Found a model site that has a hidden "VAT" tax added to the transaction total. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the long shipping from the EU. Found a wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value-added_tax Can't really figure it out. Seems intentionally confusing. Can someone else give it a try and explain it to me?
WestRider
As far as you, the final customer, are concerned, it's basically just Sales Tax, but instead of being based on the full value of the product, it's only based on the retailer's markup. If the company you're buying from is also the manufacturer, it's just Sales Tax.

Swan-of-War
I've done the math on buying some EU stuff and - after subtracting the VAT but then converting to EU - it comes out to darn near the same. Make sure they subtract it out for you
doc
most EU places wont subtract it (FW for example) it is built in to the cost.In the UK the only way to get it back is to have the product, and documentation, in hand at the airport. It is pretty much the same for me. I buy stuff in the USA, pay your sales taxes, and when I cross the border (and exceeding my limit - C$550 Battlefoam order last week) I pay Canadian sales taxeS on top. crono
Also Pax, most, if not all items (even intellectual property like downloaded games), for sale by a retailer in the EU will be VAT inclusive. To that point, SoW's suggestion will typically not be honored unless your purchase enough to qualify for exemption, like Doc's example, but it definitely can't hurt to try. :)
Guest
So basically it's an increase to the listed cost? The site in question is this guy: http://www.mirliton.it/extra_info_pages.php?pages_id=
WestRider
Well, he says specifically that it won't be applied to orders outside the EU, so you should be fine.
