I think the idea of discarding a Kraken card after every attack is sound, but I also think it should be built on as such: If there are no more kraken cards left, it automatically leaves.  So if you're unlucky enough to have the thing show up on a roll of a 2, it's only there for a max of two player rounds and then leaves until it builds up again.  That way you're not completely shutting down the crewmen economy, and forcing you to play heroes prematurely to having their coins build up and wrecking the game early on because a bad kraken roll.  It remains just as dangerous, but will go away, and that also increases the chances that it will show up multiple times, and might even leave before you can kill it, which adds more to the hunt for its VP.
