JMGraham
I'm typically a Krylon primer type of guy, but I'm now in the position of wanting the black primer to serve as a basecoat for my models (Raven Guard). Krylon is a wonderful primer, but it comes across as being a "lighter" shade of black then the deep, rich blacks that I get from paint. Rather than priming and then base coating with black, does anyone have any recommendations for a rattlecan that gives you a good deep black without obscuring detail? splinx
The army painter black primer is very decent and serves as a nice smooth prime that is darker than the Krylov buddy.
pretre
I use the Blue can from Walmart. That works pretty well.
WestRider
I can't help but be reminded of this:
VonVilkee
I'll second army painter as they do true color primer and their bottle black is a match to it letting you do touch ups if necessary. Also look at PP coal black as an interesting highlight for the black. My Malifaux where I tried to take a bit from your style Jim benefitted greatly from this color as a highlight adds richness and layers without drastically brightening the piece. If I understand correctly these raven guard want the blacks to stay black and the white to pop.
JMGraham
Cool, thanks! I'll pick up a rattlecan of Army Painter and give it a try. I usually use Dark Reaper for highlighting my blacks. That coal black looks similar - a dark charcoal with some blue mixed in.
VonVilkee
Yep sounds right figured you knew but better safe than sorry. Best part of the army painter stuff is the 100% color match.
JMGraham
Update: Army Painter black is exactly what I was after. I'm still a Krylon/Rustoleum guy for most stuff, but the AP black is perfect for black-as-a-basecoat. Thanks for your help, all!
VonVilkee
Jim if you want a pot of the color match black for touch up let me know. I have allot of blacks now and no real need for it. I like priming gray and won't do anything black again...
