  1. The Canadians will be purchasing tickets at the last minute, or so I'm told :-)
  2. I've a feeling that 9th will be 8th, supplemented with a Lord of the Rings variant.
  3. Just to be clear, unpainted models only, thanks!
  4. My list for masters had the War Banner in it. I brought the same list to VoD, and the War Banner made the difference on a number of occasions. I had it in my Stormvermin. What I had found with that unit is that when they fought unsupported, I was often just losing by one or two (or winning by one or two). Of course, it helps that Skaven only pay 25 points for it - not sure I'd do it at 35!
  5. So there won't be a Dimensional Cascade podcast team this year at OFCC. Ricky is at a wedding, Jesse is off doing army things and Tom has been consumed by Slaanesh his research. I will be at OFCC with my son and a couple of the other DC club members competing in the Open. Ryan (classicflava) is bringing a team though, so it's not all bad news. I'm just sad that we don't get to bring the Karak Eight Peaks themed team we had planned :-(
  6. Well, assuming 10" from the back of the base - he had said all his bases were side on to minimize cannon hits, so I assumed 2" wide bases. With that assumption it's a 2/3 chance to hit with a cannon. Then roll to wound is 5/6. Then 1/6 chance to kill Stegs and 2/6 to kill the 5 wound monsters. So, 9.2 and 18.4% respectively. 0.029% chance. The odds of all cannons misfiring is 0.077% :-)
  7. Craziest thing I ever heard of was actually posted on Warseer. A guy was playing Lizardmen with Carnosaur, 2 Stegadons and a Bastiladon vs Empire with 4 cannons (two Great, two Steam Tank). The Empire player gets turn and shoots off all four dinosaurs with 4 cannon shots. I worked out the odds on that one and posted it to the Warseer thread: I think it was less than 0.01% :-)
  8. From an observer's point of view, it would be great to see breakdown of scores (e.g. paint, sports, etc.) too.
  9. Looking for any Ogre Kingdoms characters on foot (Tyrant/Bruiser/Firebelly/Butcher/Slaughtermaster). I am potentially looking for multiples of each. Also looking for a half-dozen Ironguts, a Giant and an Ironblaster (these are second preference). Third preference I'm looking for a Stonehorn, and a couple of Gorgers. Can be assembled or primed, but preference is for still on sprue. I have a lot of WE models I'd be willing to trade, some assembled, some not (almost the entire range!). I also have a bunch of old High Elf stuff, and most of the range of Skaven models still in boxes. If none of these tickle your fancy, I can always send money via PayPal. Thanks, ~gwh (Edit: got everything that is scored out)
  10. Wow, almost a clean sweep for Anthony - if he'd beaten Beasley table 1 Game 5 (they were playin'!), he would have taken all 4! Nice job everyone, and congrats to Jeremy on popping his TO cherry.
  11. Rankings updated with results from Rose City Wrath.
  12. I'll give Beasley some cash for tickets, make life easier :-)
  13. Cool! I'm only really interested in the Dreadfleet.
  14. Can I buy tickets for the raffle even if I'm not attending?
  15. Rankings updated with results from Victory or Death.
  16. While I agree that Warhammer does not lend itself to high-level play, I would venture that no-one who reads this forum plays Warhammer at the highest level it can be played (myself included) - there might be one or two.
  17. That doombull combo is not fun to play against. I've faced it several times now, with different armies, and it's always very tough to kill, and is even nastier in combat than your average daemon prince (with the one caveat that he's not unbreakable). I'm surprised it's so comp cheap.
  18. The game requires a lot of social interaction with your opponent in order to play, some of which is because of the ambiguity and (in some cases unnecessary) complexity of the game. Exploiting some of the flaws in the game (or even just trying to win with Dwarfs) also often encourages a style of play that detracts from the fun, both for you and for your opponent. However, it could be argued that if the game didn't require the same level of social interaction, then this wouldn't be an issue. For example, Magic: the Gathering is an equally (if not more) complex game, but all of its rules are extremely well defined. It's meta game shifts with every new release (every few months), and they have an active group of expert players (the DCI) who regulate what cards should be allowed in a given competitive format. So, whatever deck you play, you know that you use whatever you've got to beat your opponent in 2 games out of 3 within an hour. To me, competitive Magic is incredibly cutthroat and is always WAAC, but you can play the whole game without really interacting in any meaningful fashion with your opponent. It does not detract from the game - it actually just shows that at the highest levels of the game, you can't be thinking about being a nice guy: it's pure competition. All the social interaction in the game is restricted to saying the things you need to say about moving the game along, and nothing else. With Warhammer, our tournament community is small (< 250 players in the Northwest and < 100 in any given city), our games are long (2.5 hours minimum) and our meta game shifts slowly - there's a time delay in gathering and painting the necessary miniatures, army books are inconsistent in release schedule, many players adjust their existing army to a meta shift (rather than change their entire army), probably less than 50 players who are truly interested in competitive play, and so forth. At even the most competitive tournaments, we're playing against people we know personally, or want to know personally, and we exchange a lot of social and hobby interaction pre- and post-game, as well as during. We (the overall PNW Warhammer community) just don't play the game in a truly competitive fashion, and so the flaws of the game never consistently surface, and the best players are consistently in the top tables regardless of what comp is applied to an event. As a result, comp becomes purely a personal preference of a TO. In other areas of the country or the world where they have a larger community, with more tournament play and a faster moving meta (because people are more willing to switch armies, for instance) the flaws of the Warhammer game end up funneling players toward certain lists within their army books. Because the release schedule may involve no meta changes for some time (e.g. there were 8 months with no army books, or the release of the Lizardmen / Dwarf books didn't really change the meta), optimal lists for certain armies become almost set in stone - and those tournaments become boring - rock, paper, scissors - so why bother going? Enter Swedish, which punishes the (obvious) optimal choices and aims to avoid certain styles of play that are deemed boring: gun lines, avoidance, unit spam, death stars. We don't have that problem here, because even the most competitive players know that the majority of their games will be against others who are just bringing whatever units they have painted or that they like the fluff for. The one 2-day tournament I won last year was because I brought filth, designed to exploit the flaws in the game (and arguably because I cheated in how I cast Dreaded 13th, but in 3 out 5 games I didn't take that spell, so let's assume I would have won anyway). In the other 1-day I won, I brought overpriced 6th ed. Wood Elves and won with solid battle scores and good soft scores. This community doesn't need the super-active comp that the Swedes have because we don't have the highest skill levels. I like comp because I like to think I'm a pretty competitive player, so I want to win or lose on my own skill, rather than on being Scissors to someone else's Rock or Paper. I don't think we need comp for all the reasons I just said. Ramble ramble.
  19. Ironically, I'd already written in that post. I did search for it but just missed it. Oh well.
  20. I noticed there was no posting for Victory or Death 2015. This is the second year for this tournament, organized by Dale Johnson of Chumphammer fame. It's in North Vancouver on May 2nd and 3rd and uses the US Masters comp and FAQ (2500 points, Swedish comp, etc.) Prize support is great, and the event is pretty much sold out but I think there were one or two tickets still left in case anyone wants to make the trip. For full details see the Chumphammer site.
  21. For those of you with Masters aspirations, this will be a great event to attend. If you look at the current rankings, only a couple of guys from the top 8 are attending RCW (as far as I know), which gives a great opportunity for people to bump up their own rankings points! Likewise, if you can talk some of your friends into going, your rankings points will be even greater because more attendees equals more points. I'm looking forward to hearing the results! ~gwh
  22. Fixxer: Ryan has also had a LOT of practice against Skaven!
