One thing that keeps coming up in practice games is the time frame.  We all know new rules will slow things down but the games seem to be taking a lot longer than I expected them to, especially between people who already knew 40K and are familiar with a lot of it by feel.  For example the AP's follow a predictable pattern and so a lot less looking stuff up is needed on those things when the experienced players play but even in those games I've been somewhat bothered by game length.

Hoping that smooths out.  We have a 2K tournament on July 1 and my hope is everyone going will have done some practicing and list noodling long before.  We might just raffle all prizes in consideration of the fact that some games are just not going to conclude in the 2 hours that GW claims they will.

Anyone else seeing the trend on time?  Any tips on what you're doing , other than the obvious, to avoid the time issues?

That is odd. I have only seen the reverse in the time of the games. They seem longer but that comes down to you not knowing the individual rules. Once I got the weapons down it is easy and fast

If they are going to be tweaking rules and updating factions as necessary, it almost seems like you need to buy the digital version so your Index stays up to date. Otherwise do you buy a new book every time or just use sharpie to update?

That's why they have the points side at the end. Just add a new page

  3. Played a game of 40k 8th edition vs a new player and it was a BLAST! His list was an Aspect Warrior Eldar list and I played my Tau. I got trounced and he picked the game up quickly!

Albeit, I was able to remember the rules easily enough as well as the stats so it was fun. We used all of the Eldar PGS has in their case which almost came to 70 PL.

I found that I don't like Wave Serpents, they seem too good but that is me. The super rend rules on the Eldar's base weapons... Stupid super rend.

We had fun, lots of tactical decisions were made and it felt better than when I played 5th. I like it a lot more that 5th and the bit of 6th I played.

Only half your army can be in reserve. He's talking about the half that gets deployed on table.  He's asking if a Ded Trans, deployed with 5 sternguard and 5 librarians counts as deploying 11 units ( meaning you can have 11 in Tac Res) or if it counts as a single deployment resulting in a single unit getting to benefit from Tact Reserve special rule.

Does tactical reserves count by the unit or the deployment? If by the unit then it would count them all. By deployment, then just the transport

  5. Transports don't count the as tactical reserves. It is not setting models into reserves in any way, why can be interacted with in a limited number of ways.

Tactical Reserves are, as I stated before, abilities like Manta Strike, It's After Me!, Death From Below, etc.

Basically abilities that state "During Deployment...." in the abilities section.

So, you are saying that an HQ unit, a Troop unit, deployed (set up) in a transport unit only count as one unit instead of 3 units against your required half total Tactical reserve units? So instead of having 3 units deployed for 3 other units in tactical reserve, by embarking the HQ unit and the Troop unit into the Transport unit and setting them up during deployment means you cannot have 3 units in tactical reserve you can only have 1?

Where exactly does it state that in the core rulebook?

They don't count as anything for tactical reserves.

Tactical Reserves are the special rules like Manta Strike, teleportarium, etc.

Hell yeah! I actually picked up some resin bases for my Knights in preparation for the new edition.

I... Must.... Resist... The Mech Warrior....

Oh, I will do them one day. Though, I think, I will just want to make you all cry as I apply battle damage. Drilling and cutting like a madman... Mwuhahahahahahahaha

  8. So units in transports behave a few ways.

First, those embarked into a transport don't count as separate drops. So 10 Nobz, Pain Boy, and Weirdboy count as 1 deployment when you deploy the Transport.

Those in vehicles are not in reserves, they are set aside and can shoot from open top vehicles.

Choosing Keyword designation happens during list building. So you decided your Chapter, your Legion, Sept, Dynasty, etc as you build your list. Of you have let's say 2 Captains, one White Scars and one Blood Ravens, then you would specify that during the list creation

While it is simple, there are a lot of tactical decisions to be made still. Deployment, command points, choosing when to leave combat, picking which members of a unit will splitfire, movement and how it relates to pulling other units into combat and positioning models to fire at HQ's. The game hasn't lost tactical depth, its just there in a different way.

Correct. That is what I have seen from all the videos I have seen

Played several games of 8th couple days ago but really? People are considering power points for games beside intro and 3k+? I think power points a perfect for intro games and makes Apocalypse games sooo much easier.

Anyways, Thousand Sons v Ad Mech. Played two games back to back (1000pts and 1250pts) in under 3 hours with looking up stats and being interrupted almost the entire second game. First game was Rubic Marines, Scarab termites, Sorcerer, Demon Prince and a huuuge brick of Tazzigors. I was playing a tech priest, unit of giant robot, two units of grav survivors and a unit of skitarii rangers. Deployment was super easy.

Thousand sons got turn one, moved, deepstruck the termies in next to the skitarii, killed all but two after moral. My turn one, the robots pumped out 36 shots at 36" at 6/-2/1 rerolling 1's into the tazzigors killing about 15 of them. Grav servitors killed all but two of the termies. Turn 2 more shots, got charged, ended the game with only the tech priest and sorcerer punching it out in the middle of the table.

Game Two we changed it up to me taking a knight and him taking multiple sorcerers to spam smite. The other units killed each other off while the knight got slammed with mortal wounds from the sorcerers while doing ZERO wounds with over 30+ shots over two turns.

Overall the games were quick and brutal. All the units seemed fairly well balanced. Tbo, understanding that the armies are slightly vanilla because the indexes are just a stopgap until the real indexes drop, this feels like my favorite version of 40k yet.

I need to get some games in. My Tau are nearing building completion. Not painting but building.

On a side note. The game is simple enough to learn now that I think I could teach it and I have yet to play. Yeesh it is simple

I like that it is simple. More games, less arguments, more fun. Win across the board

Yup,,units loaded into transports all count as one drop.So 10 leaders all loaded into one Rhino is one drop.Finish deploying first and go first(assuming its not stolen from you)..this will become more of a big deal as the meta forms.

Wouldnt be surprised if we start seeing army specific formations with the ability to all drop at once on deployement.

    Great I formation to know!

Given how limited power level is as a long-term structure for experienced players, is anyone else kind of annoyed that power level is given the dominant position in the indexes?

I absolutely see the value for new players, extremely infrequent casual players, and maybe even jaded veterans thinking "how 'bout we try..."

But it wouldn't be hard at all to include points on the data slate as well.  Just add an extra column on the weapon profiles with the points. Add the points per model in the massive black headers. Why refer someone to a different pushes, when you've got page space enough as is?

I've already started a notebook of units actual cost, given that some stock equipment costs 0 because it's built in to the cost, while strictly inferior options cost some. Then you've got cheaper than stock options which is super weird as a concept. Less than stock car racing? How's your life insurance?

It won't be that bad once I've actually got the index in hand, but deciphering new rules from snap shots on adobe on a 4" screen. But it's not very intuitive.

Portland Game Store has each index to look at.

As for points not in the data sheet, it is set that way so you. Have a one stop shop for model points, weapon points, and weapon profiles. It also lets them do corrections in a single place for points

With power levels don't certain units get tons of wargear for free? So if someone doesn't have a unit modeled with the most expensive loadout (or isn't playing against someone who will allow them to proxy the model as if it were), then they're basically handicapping themselves? As far as I can tell, that's the biggest difference between the two.

The most is maybe a Stormsurge or Ghostkneel getting a shield and target lock  as those are like 40 points or so each. Other than that, it comes down to weapons

7 th said resolve shots out of range as if at max range... I'm thinking mistake and using artifact of old rules.

Edit: okay child no longer in lap can type. Frontline specifically stated that charging from beyond flamer range was smart to avoid over watch. In this edition you get unlimited overwatch and backing up is a thing so I'd personally go with petre.

Warhammer TV had a Tau vs Khrone game with 3 Crisis Suits team with 2 Flamers a pop that got charged twice at 8.5" and could not Overwatch.

  15. 5 knights eh... 2500ish points with 8th edition, give or take... Hmmmm several Railsides (as seen in the Warhammer TV's Khrone vs Tau, those can ruin days)

Actually, I would probably ruin a knights day with what I consider basic weapons now. Melta's are going to be huge. Otherwise, I think with the change in how damage works and the rise of high Damage weapons not to mention that Smite hurts vehicles, this will be fine.

Huh, for every Knight someone takes I could get 2-3 Railsides hmmmm

If both Cypher and Fallen have the Imperium Keyword than you should be battleforged...and any abilities the units have will work just fine even if it involves bringing in units that dont have the Imperium Keyword...of course you have to set aside the points cost of the summoned unit though.

For now, with these detatchments we have, its really a very 'rough draft" for army building so pretty much any Imps can mix and match. That will be less common in the future as more codex updates are released containing more specific army detatchments with abilities are released im sure.

There is a caveat. If those abilities specify a certain type of keyword, they won't work on any others not of that keyword such as Space Marine Ultramarines. Or Dark Angels
