I don't know if it's just me but 8th reads like it's gonna be pretty 'killy' from the instant you start rolling dice.

Shiz is gonna get real like Right Now.

    Makes me happy :)

That's what I have been seeing too. Early assaults, high damage, etc. This will be a great edition for a tool for every job and not like past editions where it was a single tool for all jobs

Consistency is the main thing. As long as someone shows up, at every single game night, you will gradually gain regulars.

Beyond that, the players and the store need to encourage eachother to stay: Players need to suggest financial support of the store to eachother, and this is coupled with a gamestore that avoids making things difficult for players to buy things in the store. On the gamestore end, this means having game related things in stock or being reliable in getting those things ordered (either is fine).

And if the game (or game components) cannot be purchased in the store, the store needs to have something else the player can purchase, something they need, which will allow the player to support the game store while continuing their hobby, despite making their game purchases elsewhere. Food and beverages are good options here, even if they cost a bit more than the minimart down the street, as it allows the player to support their gamestore. Forge World, is an example of 40k game components which usually cannot be purchased in the store.

All wonderfully valid and factual! Sadly since the 40k scene has not been that big they only have the basic shelf. Unlike Guardian Games. Thankfully they give discounts on things they don't stock miniature wise typically and the people behind the counter can tell you if they do or do not have the ability to order something.

The Portland Game Store is actually going to pass the make or break point for most stores (2 years) and they are quickly becoming a very strong store all around. I have been a Volunteer with them since October 2015 or so and they got started that July.

They have snacks and beverages and some alcohol on tap and in can so they have that covered. Unlike Guardian though they are more of a board game store with an influence in miniatures where Guardian is the giant Jack of all trades store.

I plan on creating a regular 40k day but there are limitations. for a plan to make it big it would have to be on a Monday more than likely but they play infinity then, Tuesday is Malifaux, Shadow War, and other miniature games, Wednesday is X-Wing League, Thursday is Warmachine. Friday is Armada and X-Wing but I guess that night is not so busy, Saturday is Dropfleet Commander (one of my other Volunteer days) and at night is a board game mixer Sunday is a tournament day. . . Hmmmmm

See all kinds of awesome! I have a buddy I'm looking forward to playing more and this mission feels perfect for us free so he can have it, favors power level asp he doesn't have to muck with points fun guy but not as dedicated to this sort of part of the hobby.

Yup PL assumes you are going to take the best options for your force. So you don't have to much about on exactly what you are bringing. I think people making cards with the equipment on it to circle will be a thing.

That is a 9" radius not diameter circle in the center... not going to do the geometry but that means roughly 18 inches apart and easily farther. I actually really liked that deployment back in the day... think it was third.

Everyone says Sabotage was a well enjoyed 3rd edition mission which tells you they listened

But the description and special under dog rules really push the idea of power level which I love for the "intro", default, free what have you mission. I'm excited to be able to have an easy way to play new players/ young bloods, the mission is just so elegant in its simplicity, repeatability, and introduction to playing more than just kill them all.

I feel I can legitimately expect every player to know this mission as it is part of the digital free rules. Love it!

Also totally get you can play it with points but seriously people who are playing points are a little more advanced and will more likely be playing the paid for missions.

So you play with Points then count up the power levels. Remember, Power Levels don't include weapon upgrades so your PL will vary enough to use that method

  6. Sorry Aaron, taking yours to modify

    Name: Damion Spearman

    Armies: Tau

    Location: Portland

Available: any days but Fridays and Saturdays just give me a heads up by about a day

Preferred Game Location: Portland Game Store

Preferred Contact Method: PM here, email, Facebook (Damion Spearman)

Starting up 40K again and haven't played since beginning of 6th.  Looking for mid-power players.  Still assembling my stuff. Yes you can admire the self inflicted battle damage to my suits.

I am a new Tau player and I have not played in a long time. When I ended it was playing Blood Angels.

And amend it to rolling the random objective before placing the objective markers so one player isn't pleasantly surprised that the key to victory just happens to already be sitting in a defensible position deep in their deployment zone.

Having one player guaranteed to win from before the game starts unless their opponent can wrest it back is just bad design.

Yup. Looks like they aimed for ease of mission flexibility. So they let you adjust missions and can mix and match things.

Means a strong system that can handle those changes

Well feel free to drop by on Saturday anyway. We usually have a table open for painting and my buddy who plays Tau & paints like a pro should be there to offer some advice if you need it.

Saturdays are my Dropfleet Commander days at PGS. They have a painting section there as well as some alcohol on tap

That mission included in free play is awesome. Simple for new players, removed points but maintained command points, simple mission that doesn't just involve killing. Great intro to missions with replay ability not particularly deep but for the included mission it is amazing.

You could play it with points

  10. With the advent of 8th edition coming ever closer I am looking at starting a 40k night at The Portland Game Store.

While not a big store it is friendly, clean, and easy to access. The owners are cool and the staff friendly.

They have not had much time to 40k there and no one to help build the community but since I enjoy the place (and already volunteer for 2 other games), I want to help expand this as well. Tables are at about the Guardian Games level (they use table toppers) and the terrain is decent.

As for me, I am building Tau for my new 40k army (not for the OP, though I think 8th will bring a balance of sorts) and I am enjoying applying battle damage to the models. So let me know what you think!

Yeah, I am trying to focus on places where I tend to play and seem to have a lower number of WAAC/Tournament players. Mostly because I tend to enjoy narrative campaigns and I would love to try and put one together for this summer. :D

    *cough* Portland Game Store *cough*

I am going to be setting up a night if I can there. They have alcohol on tap, not a huge environment, friendly, clean, and fun. Oh and I am restarting 40k with Tau! (not for tournaments but for the suits... Oh and the battle damage!)

  12. I am on Facebook, the forums and you can PM me for my email. So many different areas and I forget one of them.

Thank you for your interest. The game is going strong. Having our 3rd tournament at the end of April and likely the 4th in May or June.

The game is strong and a lot of fun. Straight forward enough that it is not hard but a lot of depth.

I tend to handle all the demos and have fleets for all factions though I have to build my Shaltari up more.

  13. Dropfleet commander has landed and is growing.

For those that dont know, Dropfleet Commander is a Space combat game that takes place in the orbit of planets. You have classic Battlefleet Gothic styles of combat, you have objectives of getting boots to the ground and you can take over stations!
