Marneus Calgar and Haarken Worldclaimer – Rules Preview

PreOrderPreview-Dec02-VigilusHeader.jpg

Vigilus Defiant is almost upon us – in fact, it’s up for pre-order on Saturday! We’ve learned a lot about the war-torn history of the sentinel world of late (there are even free short stories to read – check out the Vigilus page), so this week, we’re taking a closer look at some of the cool rules that can be found within the action-packed campaign book.

Today, we’re sizing up two mighty commanders leading as the age-old conflict between Heretic and Adeptus Astartes breaks out once more in this fiercely-contested war zone.

VigilusWeekender-Nov24-VigilusDefiant40y

First up, let’s look at the at…

Vigulus-Dec4-HaarkenHeader-2kjv.jpg

Also known as the Herald of the Apocalypse and the Proclamator of Abaddon’s Reign, it’s fair to say that this guy enjoys the favour of the Warmaster. Yet such lofty esteem is not easily won. Haarken Worldclaimer is far more than a mere herald – he’s a greatly feared Chaos Lord of the Black Legion in his own right. He knows well the power of fear and wields it as a weapon in his conquests. Upon making planetfall, he drives his cursed spear into the ground of each new world he claims in the name of the Abaddon – a simple but symbolic act that has portended the doom of countless Imperial planets.

On the battlefield, Haarken Worldclaimer is a formidable adversary. As a Chaos Lord, he boasts an enviable profile and is protected by a Sigil of Corruption, granting him a 4+ invulnerable save.

Every bit the vanguard commander, Haarken Worldclaimer is often found leading swift and brutal speartip strikes alongside packs of ferocious Raptors. His jump pack and Raptor Strike ability not only enable him to lead these lightning attacks in person but, as Lord of the Raptors, he inspires friendly Raptors within 6″, enabling them to tear through their prey in short order. What’s more, this ability applies to all Raptors, not just those of the Black Legion, so he makes for a useful ally if you favour using them.

Haarken Worldclaimer has two further abilities that represent his role as Abaddon’s harbinger and executioner. First up, his Herald of the Apocalypse ability reduces the Leadership of enemy units within a massive 18″ radius – an intimidating prospect for all but the most stoic enemies – and he grows in ferocity for each worthy life he claims:

Vigulus-Dec4-Headclaimer-7nv.jpg

What’s more, he can slaughter prey with his lightning claw or skewer foes at a distance by hurling his warp-tainted Helspear:

Vigulus-Dec4-Helspear-8mb.jpg

There can be no doubt – Haarken Worldclaimer is a bit of a menace! But what about the commander of Vigilus’ embattled defenders?

Vigulus-Dec4-MarneusHeader-1kb.jpg

This mighty champion of Humanity surely needs no introduction, for he is known throughout the Imperium and his deeds are legion:

Vigulus-Dec4-MarneusStockImage-9lt.jpg

He is the Lord Macragge, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines… and now he is Primaris! Marneus Calgar’s rebirth has not only led to an incredible new miniature, but an impressively beefed-up set of rules. Seriously, his profile alone is almost Primarch-worthy:

Vigulus-Dec4-MarneusCharacteristicProfil

Marneus Calgar now wears the Armour of Heraclus – a custom suit of Mk X Gravis armour that allows him to move unencumbered, provides him with a 4+ invulnerable save and halves any damage he suffers! And, of course, he would never leave Macragge without his trusty Gauntlets of Ultramar. Calgar’s iconic twin power fists remain as brutally powerful as they’ve always been, but when combined with his augmented profile, he’ll be able to tear a battle tank apart in a single round of combat!

Of course, Marneus Calgar also makes for a fantastic choice of Warlord. Not only will this net you a couple of bonus Command Points from his Master Tactician ability, but his Adept of the Codex Warlord Trait will enable you to replenish your store of Command Points even as you spend them:

As if he wasn’t already awesome enough, Marneus Calgar also has the powerful Chapter Master aura ability, which inspires nearby Ultramarines to fight even harder:

Marneus Calgar and his world-claiming adversary are up for pre-order this weekend, along with the glorious Vigilus Defiant campaign book in which you’ll find their full rules. The question is, will you fight for Chaos, the Imperium, or one of the many other warring factions on Vigilus? proclaim your allegiance on our Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page and ready yourselves for war!

Lord of the Warptalons would have been a much better choice for GW, as that unit really needs buffs and the raptors are doing fine. And on top of everything, black legion trait modfies rapid fire weapons (and screws over plasma guns), so raptors really aren't the best unit for Black Legion.

Model looks cool, but I'd much rather it was a Night Lords character than black legion (since black legion already has 2 other characters, and night lords have none. Plus, in fluff, night lords love their raptors).

Imperial Specialist Detachments – Rules Preview

PreOrderPreview-Dec02-VigilusHeader.jpg

We’re back, this time with a look at the Imperial Specialist Detachments found in Vigilus Defiant. We’ve already introduced how to include Specialist Detachments in your army, and offered some insight into those available to the xenos forces on Vigilus, but before we look at those available to the Imperium, we can reveal another innovative layer to their rules – the Field Commander Stratagem:

Vigulus-Dec6-FieldCommanderStratagem-Con

This enables you to lead your Specialist Detachment with an appropriately thematic Character without sacrificing your usual preference of Warlord (or indeed their associated Warlord Trait) – all for the cost of a single Command Point! For example, you could lead a sweeping right hook with a Kult of Speed ‘field commanded’ by a Deffkilla Wartrike, while your Warboss leads the Boyz down the middle. If you like to forge a narrative with your games, this is a great way to do it!

So, let’s get on with taking a look at the Imperial Specialist Detachments:

Vigulus-Dec6-AdeptusAstartesIndomitusCru

Vigulus-Dec6-IndomitusCrusadersSpecialisIf you’re a fan of Primaris Space Marines, then this is the one for you, as it represents the combined armies of Primaris Marines that surged forth from Terra to take the fight to foes of the Imperium alongside its Lord Commander. This is epitomised by the Grey Shield Warlord Trait and Standard of the Ultima Founding, which both offer incredibly useful once-per-battle abilities and represent the combined fighting experience of the different Chapters that fought in Gulliman’s galactic crusade.

However, arguably the coolest part of this Specialist Detachment is the ability to upgrade your Intercessors further with the Veteran Intercessors Stratagem. Not only does it upgrade their Attacks and Leadership characteristics by 1 for the cost of a single Command Point, but it unlocks one of three additional Stratagems according to their wargear. Fed up with those pesky characters bolstering enemy units with their aura abilities? Deal with the problem directly with the Target Sighted Stratagem:

Vigulus-Dec6-TargetSightedStratagem-Cont

There are also Specialist Detachments for some of the other famous Chapters fighting on Vigilus, such as the Imperial Fists Siegebreaker Cohort, the Crimson Fists Liberator Strike Force, the Black Templars Sword Brethren, the Ravenwing Attack Squadron and the Space Wolves Stalker Pack. However, there is one more for the Adeptus Astartes that deserves a special mention…

Vigulus-Dec6-PrimarisMarinesBattleShot-C

Vigulus-Dec6-UltramarinesVictrixGuard-Su

Vigulus-Dec6-UltramarinesVictrixGuardSpe

If you like the idea of fielding Space Marine Veterans in large quantities, this is the way to do it. Not only do these super-elite Ultramarines have access to two powerful relics in the Standard of Macragge Inviolate and Soldier’s Blade (not to mention a Warlord Trait that adds 1 to wound rolls for nearby Victrix Guard units in the Fight phase), but check out these two Stratagems:

Vigulus-Dec6-FightLikeDemigodsStratagem-

Vigulus-Dec6-StrikeFirstForUltramarStrat

Fight Like Demigods doesn’t just sound awesome, it offers a handy buff too. Strike First, though costly at 3 Command Points, can blunt or destroy an enemy charge before it has even begun. If used in the right situation, it’s a potential game-winner.

Vigulus-Dec6-MarneusCalgarAndChums-Conte

Vigulus-Dec6-AdeptusMechanicusCybernetic

Vigulus-Dec6-CyberneticaCohortSpecialist

Do you like the idea of an army of marching Kastelan Robots? Well, look no further than the Cybernetica Cohort. In addition to the Power Surge Stratagem that adds 3 to a unit’s charge rolls, or the Strafing Fire Run Stratagem that temporarily turns Heavy weapons into Assault weapons, you’ll have access to a great Warlord Trait for keeping your beloved machines of death in the battle:

Vigulus-Dec6-AdeptOfTheLegioCybernetica-

Adeptus Mechanicus players will also be able to field a Servitor Maniple, which more than caters for all your Kataphron-based killy-death needs.

Vigulus-Dec6-AdeptusMechanicusBattleshot

Vigulus-Dec6-AstraMilitarumEmperorsFistT

If you’re one of the Astra Militarum’s finest tread-heads, who favours crushing their foes with unstoppable armoured assaults, then this Specialist Detachment is for you. First up is a nasty Warlord Trait called Unflinching Resolve that enables Emperor’s Fist units within 6″ to re-roll failed hit rolls when firing overwatch – as if charging towards a punisher gatling cannon wasn’t scary enough. There are also two Stratagems that help your glorious Leman Russ to squish enemies on the charge or fire twice, even if they Advanced. Finally, there’s this really cool relic battle cannon – the only Astra Militarum relic designed for use on a tank:

Vigulus-Dec6-HammerOfSunderanceRelic-Con

Of course, that’s not all for the Astra Militarum – they can also field Emperor’s Blade Assault Companies, Emperor’s Wrath Artillery Companies and Emperor’s Conclave Infantry Companies for good measure, not to mention Militarum Tempestus Drop Forces.

Vigulus-Dec6-AstraMilitarumBattleshot-Co

That’s it for the various Imperial Specialist Detachments in Vigilus Defiant. You can order a Space Marines Primaris Interdiction Force or Imperial Fists Supremacy Force today, and grab some Kastelan Robots or Leman Russ Battle Tanks online or in your nearest stores to get you ready for the war on Vigilus.

But we’re not done yet – check back tomorrow, when we’ll be discussing the sweeping campaign rules in the book and how you can apply them to your own gaming group.

Vigulus-Dec6-IndomitusCrusadersSpecialis

I realize the reason is probably a mechanical one, keeping the game balanced and what not... But its kind of hilarious that a Redemptor Dreadnought cannot be made into an Indomitus Crusaders veteran.

”Brother-Lieutenant. I am awakened once more, I shall assist your efforts to cleanse this— Hey, why do you guys all have those spiffy new white helmets?”

”We’re Veterans now. Veterans get to wear spiffy helmets. There was a memo.”

”I too wish to be a Veteran. I fought alongside you in the cleansing of Calufrax, the raid on Eudamas, the pacification of Gallifr—“

”We’re sorry. Only people who didn’t get their heads chopped off by a Xenos get to be Veterans. No head, no helmet. No helmet, not a Veteran.”

”I am sad now.”

Does it feel. to anyone else, that GW wants to phase out the non-ultramarine chapters for SM and the non-black legion chapters for CSM? Just seems kinda wierd to keep bolstering the already bolstered chapters/legions.

No. Not at all.

For the Ultramarines? Not particularly. For as long as I've played, Ultramarines have been front and center of the entire franchise, never mind the Space Marines as a faction. And while they are by far the most prevalent in the official content (campaign books, artwork, and that sort of thing), they are far less so in the Black Library, and even in the Codexes, it's still "Codex: Space Marines," and not "Codex: Ultramarines." Are they the most developed Chapter? Absolutely. I don't think that means GW is looking to phase out the other Chapters, however.

Technically, there hasn’t been a Codex: Ultramarines since early in Second Edition (1995). Even in that book, the Grey Knights, Imperial Fists, and Legion of the Damned get several pages all to themselves. The color section also devoted a couple pages to line-ups of other “generic” chapters.

The Ultramarines do get a lot more “focus” than the other generic Chapters, but not significantly more so than the other big name Chapters: Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and Dark Angels have been the “Big Four” since Second Edition. All of them are roughly equal when it comes to unique units, special characters, and other special rules... Maybe not at any given moment in time, but over the lifetime of any given edition the four tend to get about the same amount of love. If anything, I’d say the Dark Angels are probably the one of the Big Four that gets the least “love” in these terms... But it’s still marginal.

Black Templars, Imperial Fists, Salamanders, and Crimson Fists seem to get the most love of the “other” Chapters.

Man, Indomitus Crusaders looks like a lot of fun. There’s a lot of salt being thrown at it over on Reddit and other forums about giving mêlée buffs to a shooting army (which is what “Veteran Intercessors” does), but I don’t really care about that. It looks fun to play.
