Eldar/Tau Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

As some of you know I have a Tyranid army, and now I want to start a second.  I would like to make an army that is a polar opposite of nids so i've narrowed it down to Eldar or Tau, Mainly because I like the look of them the best.  Anyone have any experience playing with or against either? if so which would you suggest, and what units would you suggest taking to leaving out?  Any insight would help a ton, don't have tons of money to spend so want to avoid the buy everything and see what unit you like strategy, as i did with my nids.

Hey guys,

As some of you know I have a Tyranid army, and now I want to start a second. --- I know they can only do allies as 'Come the apocalypse' but I suggest you try a game with a small PROXIED Tau or Eldar force as allies.

I would like to make an army that is a polar opposite of nids so i've narrowed it down to Eldar or Tau, Mainly because I like the look of them the best.  -- You can never go wrong with the rule of cool.  A couple of notes here: The eldar are OLD MODELS, meaning their design hasn't been touched since last century, where as the Tau....are pretty much in the same boat, I just think the Tau age better.  The eldar look like a bad reminder of the 70s in some space elf kinda way, I bet they have wood paneling in their basements.....and mustaches

Anyone have any experience playing with or against either?  I do, I play wave serpent spam, I have a thing for fast skimmers, I LOVE the mobility.  Tau I've only played as allies and they shoot very well and have answers for many 40k concerns.  Tau can be more static than Eldar.  Tau have no credible CC answers whereas the Eldar do.  Like the tyranids the eldar are specialists,

if so which would you suggest, and what units would you suggest taking to leaving out?  I'll need to get back to you on this.

Any insight would help a ton, don't have tons of money to spend so want to avoid the buy everything and see what unit you like strategy, as i did with my nids. ---- PROXY PROXY PROXY and PROXY some moar

polar opposite of nids would be shooty mobile eldar. so wave serpents. swooping hawks are fun. fire dragons kill tanks. jet bikes are good mobile scoring. guardians with bladestorm kick out the punishment. war walkers can pretty sweet outflankers. pretty much all the units in the new eldar codex are awesome except for maybe banshees.

Either army would be a good choice. However there are some distinctions from each despite the massive similarities:(remember these are just my opinions having faced them quite a bit with nids)

Tau:

Lots of ways to ignore cover

Various units don't need line of sight

Lower than low initiative.

Broad side units are great

Riptides are stupid good

I haven't noticed any great close combat units

Lots of Strength 5 shooting.

Low leadership

No psykers

Eldar:

Arguably the fastest army in the game

Guardian jetbikes arguably the best troops in the game.

A few good close combat units

On average high initiative

More strength 6 shooting than I would care to count

Arguably the best psykers in the game.

Probably the worst flier in the game (tied with dark eldar)

WraithKnight is pretty boss but I wouldn't say better than riptide.

Vehicles can be pretty delicate (minus that shield boost weapon they have)

Both armies are probably the most shooty armies in the game, and aren't all stars in close combat. I would say overall think of Tau as a slightly more precise and lower ap army at shooting. Eldar would be a lot more shooting at str 6 and high ap. Both armies are hand in hand as being the best in the game. Tau I would personally say is number one. Good luck.

That's awesome guys, thank you so much for the insight. I think I have enough nids to proxy a while army and try each out. Also not sure if people know about it but I found this app called "Battle scribe" it's amazing. Can upload all of the codexes from their site for free and makes making army lists insanely easy.

Duncan loves the thing! I'm personally dubious of computer stuff for lists but that is more memory related I remember my gear better if I write it out.

Love love love!  I shelled out for the pay version, so I could favorite and save unit set-ups!  Worth it!

Also, I know my Codex so well (After all these long years of no updates) that i know all the point costs, the program is just really handy for organizing thoughts/lists, etc.  And you can print, or just display it on a phone.

Good stuff.

I have a lot of experience with Tau and a little with Eldar (as allies)

As far as which to play, I think bang-for-buck Tau are the way to go. They shoot hard. Really hard. Eldar can do a lot of different things with their codex, but each unit can only do very specific things. They don't have generalists, so when you want to try something new, you often have to replace an entire unit with an entirely new one.

Tau, on the other hand, can completely change a unit's role by the weapons and gear they take. So when it comes to growing your collection, a small Tau collection will offer you many more options and customization, than an equally sized Eldar collection.

So I think I've decided on tau, the more I see then the more I like them. What do you guys think about this starting army just to get me going:

HQ-

Still no idea

Troops-

Bunch of fire warriors

Fast-

Couple squads of pathfinders

Elite-

1-2 riptides

1-2 crisis squads

Heavy-

2 hammerheads

Not looking for super competative but more just fun and versitle.
