The official points totals for the 2017 North American tournament season have now been decided and are as follows:

oh god, that mid-war point value sucks balls. How can they cut down the variants that much in points and still have any hope of balance???? are they ruining the game?

Is it because the V4 of the rules is drastically changing the points values of units?

Perhaps I am naive in these discussions, but I tend to take the approach that the results are more important than the mechanisms (unless the mechanism is tedious or difficult to learn).

 

I will have something pertinent to say about points AFTER I have EXPERIENCE comparing two v3. matched lists (Germans vs. Soviets, or Germans vs. Brits) and the same "armies" in v4 points, based on what the battles are like, not how the lists are written out.

 

I speak only for myself when I say that the players, lists+stats, terrain, rules and missions taken together determine the game experience.

simplifying rules and simplifying points is not the same thing. I love my DAK. They are my favorite army in FoW. The options available for those units now is staggering. How are they going to keep that same variance for balance? PP just doubled their point values for Warmachine and Hordes. They did it, so that they could have more flexibility for balancing units and options. All they did was double it. Battlefront is going the other way in a fairly extreme fashion.

My guess is that a lot of the "Any or All" options are going to be now just "All"

 

For instance, "Add an AA MG to any or all M14/41 for +5 points a piece" will now be "Add AA MG's to all M14/41's for +2 points" or something along those lines.  I don't know that we will lose all that much granularity.  Most of the major additions or subtractions to platoons are already worth 15 points or more, which can still be used in the 100 pt system.

 

For the Germans my guess is that Panzerknackers will be included in the cost of every platoon now.
