I have tons of stuff to replace the Ogryns.  I just needed an elite.

Seems like a more competitive option would be another platoon commander and then roll the 120 points into a tank or 2 more infantry squads.

I have a manticore, 2 wyverns, 5 other Leman Russes and 30 more infantry.

Awesome. If you take another platoon commander, that even saves you from having to use Yarrick to issue orders, so you could take the Grand Strategist warlord trait if you're willing 😉

As for what else to add...I think your list could benefit from more long range troop-killing. So I'd go with the two wyverns.

  2. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I would recommend starting your army build very slowly, and purchasing/building/painting only those models that you're likely to use no matter what (e.g., rhinos, emp's champs, chaplain, etc.). Then wait to fill out the rest until Chapter Approved comes out at the end of the year. GW knows that Black Templars are suffering, and they're likely to get some buffs.

That is an improvement over the previous list just because of the plasma. There are still tons of tweaks and additions I would do to the list but its still a solid core of an army that should play well.

Yeah I agree. Weakest remaining link is the ogryns. What other models do you have? Dropping the ogryns can get you a lot of stuff...could use a manticore, or even turn your Leman Russes into additional Tank Commanders and fill out your heavy support with cheap mortar teams.

I like that the rough riders remain in two squads of 5. They'll have to use their flanking maneuvers to survive, and then even with 5 models they'll push enemy units toward the center of the board, which is where the rest of your army wants them.

Death Guard codex is in great shape. No rips, tears, etc. I could do Media Mail (I'll have to figure out what that is when I get there, never shipped via that).

Cool I'll take it - let me know how much it will be shipped. Do you take PayPal? I'll PM you my address and stuff 🙂

How bad, in your opinion, are meltas in squads?  Worth spending a good amount on Victoria Miniatures to rearm them?

The tanks are pretty set as is, and with Bs4 and not having -1 when moving means they hit often and well.

In the few games I've used them, the multimeltas have performed well.

Meltas in squads are pretty terrible. The only redeeming factor here is that you're playing Tallarn. I can't judge for you whether it's worth spending money on re-arming them, but I would do so. If you do change them, maybe magnetize them so that if they ever rebalance melta guns you can put them back?

Multimeltas are definitely better, but again they're too pricey for what they do relative to heavy bolters, plasma cannons, or even lascannons...they require you to close distances, and you don't want to be getting closer to things with a valuable leman russ.

    Is that bad?

It's not optimal, since you only need 6 troops to satisfy the brigade requirements.

I want Yarrick to do orders so he needs to be warlord.

    But...command points!

On the picture for the Wulfen Dread. It's down toward the bottom where it's starting to fade out, but it's still legible.

Ah yes, nice. Really tempting but then against multi-wound models I would prefer a Great Wolf Claw over using the axe's Cleave profile. Hmm...

Not sure I'd get too comfortable with that combo, what with CA2018 just around the corner and all..

Best not to get too comfortable with anything in 8th ed, but while it exists that's hardly a reason to avoid something - it's not like you have to spend time modeling either of those selections.

  9. Imo melta weapons are some of the biggest point-sinks in 8th Ed. Plasma is always more versatile and often more destructive; for the points there's nothing better. So I would go with heavy bolters on the leman Russ (remember that in 8th you can select different targets for every weapon) and plasmaguns on the infantry squads.

    Why callidus over eversor?

And seriously consider picking Grand Strategist - with that plus Kurov's Aquila you'll have a hard time running out of CP.

  10. Haven't hobbied in a long time but am getting back into it since I found a quality & nearby 40k club in Brooklyn. Right now I'm building/painting/expanding my Vostroyans, which I tend to use as allies for Sisters, Inquisition, Deathwatch, etc.

Today was also the first time I magnetized or pinned stuff, and I think it worked out really well:

First up was a single ogre that I needed to be able to count as an Ogre Bodyguard (with all possible load-outs) or a counts-as Nork Deddog, depending on the situation. Here is Mr. Potato Ogryn:

(Below is my Vostroyan version of Nork...the knife is a halberd from the Bretonnian men-at-arms kit.)

(Below is how I'll run this model most of the time: as a hard-to-kill, close-combat-focused ogryn bodyguard.)

Next were 10 Tempestus Scions, but I wanted to be able to run them as a command squad with 4 special weapons, or a squad of 10, or two squads of 5...you get the idea. Here they are as two separate squads, one with 2 plasma guns and the other with 2 hot shot volley guns:

And here are the sergeants with their magnetized arms (I'm in the process of creating more, with pistol options and other stuff). To create the power mace / command rod, I removed the chainsword and pinned a 3rd-party Sororitas mace on top. Several models also needed new antenna on their armor after I broke them while scraping off mold lines, so I used the same pinning wire to replace those (for example, see the model on the far right in the first picture).

Notice that every model has a custom shoulder pad with a V for Vostroya:

...Which should be filled with your guardians and avengers. Which I don't think you plan to do cause you gave them a weapons platform (bright lances are good though!). Having your "slow" squishy troops out in the open is bad idea when they have such lovely metal (bone?) boxes to hide in.

weapons platforms can go inside of transports - they have the infantry keyword

Being that they have a codex now, you are supposed to be using it instead of Index.

pretty sure GW have explicitly stated that you can choose to use index entries whenever you want - there's nothing stopping it whatsoever.
