I need a recommendation.

In a fit of terrible judgment I bought some miniatures yesterday. I'm thinking I need a small 40k for reasons. Probably just two or three squads of infantry and a couple dreads. My desired concept is the lords of order from the old fantasy lore. Focus is assault. Now I haven't played since about Rogue Trader era so I know exactly nothing. I was hoping to get a little direction as to which list might work best. Say I want two assault squads, a support squad, an assault dread and a support dread. What army do you recommend? What else do I need to know?

Well, support you mean space marines devastators or an equivalent. space wolves have the best all around space marine heavy support squad. Stock space marines you can boost 1shooter's ballistic. For jump pack assault squad the base assault squads pale in comparison to blood angels, kinda. Pistols are a thing. Your best assault dread is going to be a Blood angels death company dreadnaught. For the support dread figure out if you want to shoot 24/36/48 inches. That's going to determine the best one.

You are going to need a HQ, this is relevant because both space wolves and blood angels have dreadnaught as HQ choices.

Bjorn the Fell Handed you can take heavy plasma cannon, TL lascannon, Assault cannon for the 24/36/48 inch threat, he has BS 2 and rerolls 1's, 5+ FNP, gives you a free command point and gives SW units within 6 rerolls 1's. For a long range dreadnaught, really really not bad and it takes an HQ slot.

The trouble is going to be your troop slot.

One of the only ways to take assault squads as troops is to take grey knights Strike Squad. Only, they aren't really assault squads, you get stormbolters and dual falchions but they still have 6" movement.

There are some other alternative, either figure out how to make a support squad fast attack, or how to make a support squad an elite choice. And/or taking the assault dread as an elite choice.

If you stick with space wolves, taking 2 unit's Wolf guard with jump pack is 2 elite choices,  This is really not a bad idea because wolf guard get a chainsword for free, so you get boltgun, bolt pistol and chainsword. And you get to pick between stock weapons like plasma pistol and power sword, Space wolf weapons like the frost axe, and combi weapons (combi flamer, cough, cough)

So honestly I think you would be well served to look at space wolves. 1 Bjorn the Fell handed, 1 squad Long Fangs, 2 squads Wolf Guard, and a dreadnaught set up in either support or assault, if  you have the points look at venerable dreadnaught, BS/WS 2+ ftw. Bjorn, with the True claw is arguably better than a death company dreadnaught.

All that will run you 46 PL  base, add 1 for a venerable dreadnaught, +1 add a long fang for 5 heavy weapons, and 2+ for the termi with missile launcher for a total of 50 PL, I think. Long Fangs are unique in being able to take 5 heavy weapons (6-7 if you count the terminator with the 2 shot missile launcher), and carry their own rerolls for the entire unit.

Good stuff. Thanks guys. I've always liked the idea of taking a chaos force and spinning it around to follow order instead. The actual army list doesn't really matter so much. I'm all about the fluff. I think my dudes are devotees of Arianka Goddess of order and discipline who is entombed in a crystalline coffin by an unnamed Chaos God much to the consternation of her celestial lover Alluminas God of everlasting light. There is probably a way to work in the third wheel Solkan, God of vengeance and retribution. I like the idea of crazy armored warriors who are really just animated specters of a cosmic love triangle. Maybe some future unabomber type character has fused arcane technology with a feudalistic poltergeist goon squad in order seize illegitimate mineral rights in some poorly patrolled imperial backwater. More on that later. I'm mainly relying on these dreamforge figures that I found on sale. Banner_Valkir_Assault_Troopers_80cd05cf-

Thing is, these guys are on 40mm bases so I'm hoping for a list that lets me take something of equivalent size as a troops choice. I'm also hoping for suggesting for a model to convert as a dreadnought. I like the contemptor figure well enough but I'm weird and want something more obscure. Maybe a gundam or something like that.

Thanks!

So I've started putting these together and they aren't large enough to be terminators. I think they will need to count for ordinary marines instead. So, I need to find a figure to stand in for termies and I need to re assess army list choice to reflect this. Blood Angels seem like a good bet. Do the specialist marine forces still have access to vanilla marine gear for the most part?
