McNathanson
I thought that could be read as "the unit will take the protection of the HC"... the very first line where it says "once per battle, a model..." makes me think its supposed to be a single model using it each time it's used. Clearly a big difference!
AbusePuppy
I can definitely see where that reading comes from- the first part of the text does, indeed, refer to its use by a single model. However, the part I quoted ("declare that the unit") seems to say that you have to use them all together, which seems like a reasonable limitation- the whole unit benefits from it, so the whole unit has to expend it. That said, one interesting part of the wording is that if a unit shoots at a Ghostkeel and it uses its Countermeasures, all of that unit's shooting that phase is made as snap shots- even shooting against targets other than the Ghostkeel. Could make things really awkward for an enemy superheavy vehicle or a Stormsurge that was on doubletap mode.

I definitely see where you are coming from, I just think that it is reasonably read both ways, and therefore probably will need a FAQ. But what do I know?! Lord Hanaur
Well when something ie "easily read" two ways... Go with the more conservative reading until you DO find out otherwise. At least that is what I might do.

IW Raptors
Why one of the rules design team members does not work on a FAQ during his toilet breaks I don't know. I'd be a lazy feck, just go to the ITC FAQ or something, run with their rulings and release it..as paid content, hardback book. Complete with pretty drawings. $$$
AbusePuppy
Basically because GW doesn't think that FAQs should even need to exist. In their conception, the rules are an ephemeral thing that should never interfere with the playing of the game or the spending of your money to by precious, precious plastic soldiers.
fluger
Exactly that, GW views their rules as a framework for fun pretend time RPG style gaming rather than structured competition.

IW Raptors
I remember back in 3rd ed the designers seemed to be more vocal and released FAQs iirc. Different time though, I remember them releasing 3.5 ed experimental rules via chapter approved (I think). Was still balance problems back then of course and shoddy rules. I don't buy white dwarf ever now, but do the designers ever even comment on the game in a general sense?
AbusePuppy
And it's worked for them for 20-30 years. Communism "worked" for Russia for eighty years before collapsing into a giant pile of garbage.
