Winning Best Painted with a commissioned army
scottshoemaker replied to KAPcom's topic in Warhammer 40,000
Sigh. It's not about being professionally painted, it's about painting it yourself. -
Winning Best Painted with a commissioned army

It's based on the qualifications for the award, my experiences were that Peoples Choice didn't exclude commissioned work. By making a separation it then does become different, that's the point. -

We can't get hung up on the award title. I don't care if it's the Cosmo P McGillicutty Golden Brush award, what are the qualifications for winning the prestigious MickyG? If the TO doesn't care if if you painted it or it was a commission, then I can't complain, because it's on me to read the tourny rules. If someone lies about it though, then they are a small person indeed. I've commissioned work, I do commission work, and in this small community we live in honesty and sportsmanship should rule the day. Again, I'm old school. My belief is that a overall winner should do well in all aspects of the hobby to rise above the other opponents. Hell the only tourny I ever won I had an even win-loss-tie record, but my other scores elevated. That was how that event was structured. -

My experience had been that a Peoples Choice award would be way more open to commissioned work. -

The equivalency to me is signing up for a tourney, then paying a much more accomplished player to play your games for you, then claiming award/prize at the end. We (of the "they" camp) are saying that a person should be honest about having commissioned an army. If an event has a Best Painted award, read the rules for qualifying for Best Painted. If they state you must have painted the army yourself, then there you go. If a person doesn't disclose the commissioned work, then they are a liar. Simple. Consequences to follow. -

You can't sign up for a paid tourny and expect a refund because you won't be eligible for something. Soccer Moms did this to us... -
Winning Best Painted with a commissioned army
scottshoemaker replied to KAPcom's topic in Warhammer 40,000
Um, no. Any event worth their salt will define what the qualifications are. Your example above defines a cheater. I'm not fond of cheating. This type of logic is the same as using loaded dice to win Best General. "But it doesn't say in the Tourny packet that I can't use loaded dice" is a dick move. So is passing off a paid painted army as your own work. It's called plagiarism. When I was really active in running events I zeroed folks appearance scores for lying about the paint work. This is a matter I'll throw down on. -
Winning Best Painted with a commissioned army

Best Painted is not the same as Best Appearance. I've awarded both type of Bests depending on the category. Killer conversions and scratchbuilds backing with an average paint job do not equal Best Painted. -

I'm old school. You must paint your army to win Best Painted. This is a point my opinion does not flex. -
I read that squats are indeed coming back as demerung (sp). It an army that plays the players playing with another army. How meta

Hoo boy. Here we go. Competition and OFCC
scottshoemaker replied to pretre's topic in Warhammer 40,000
@Darthweasel. You actually are the target audience of the OFCC. It not supposed to be interpreted as a tournament. It is an event where we can roll out our toys and have a crackin good time. The list rating committee and the team captions are in place to enforce restraint. The forge world argument got out of hand. Even though there were pretty loose restriction on army construction ( I ran an unbound list that was mostly ineffective ). There were units and combos that were ruled too powerful and rejected. As a non tournament player myself I enjoyed the whole event. OFCC realty is more about a player mindset than anything else. With the addition of additional night we were able to accommodate more styles of play to include a hardcore tourney, which knowing my limitations I didn't participate in. As long as the spirit of the event is held by the participants the OFCC will continue to be the great event it is. -

If you'd like to have a highlander event then GOYA and run it, sounds like a hoot. But don't pitch the ball over the fence and complain about the organizers and how "someone" else should do it, or call out the organizers for not "doing something about the problem". It's a game, there is no problem. If you want balance play chess. Let's move on to putting our man dollies together. -

Next up Burk's Admech valkyrie and another battlewagon. The battlewagon is getting a hotrod cab that will double as an Opel Blitz Trukk cab for German themed orks. Conversion twofer! -

I really like FW being included. It allows some great models to be placed on the table. It also filled in some gaps in lists and allows for armies you won't ever see otherwise. I'd agree that the older FW stuff tended to be undercosted for what it does, but that trend is changing. You'd better belive anything I run will have FW allowed. If you're not OK with that, don't play. I don't play this game to win. If I want to feel like a champion I'll go home and sex with my wife. -

From what I was able to glean, the attendance question is really more about the economy of scale, ie more people mean a better venue, and more time at that venue. Growing for growing's sake isn't really the agenda. -

All, rather than dump on the volunteer organizers then help. I helped and played this year for the first time. The amount of work involved just to get this event run is tremendous. The way I see it is that we are adults and should be able to self police to a large degree. I have little patience for the attitude that somehow the organizers are at fault. As has been stated many times this is an event, not a tournament. Some of your opponents may be dicks or have mean lists. Get over it. It's not up to the organizers to babysit. I'm hoping to run something next year. If it doesn't work out, then that's fine. I'm not a paid , full time event coordinator and neither are any of the organizers. -

Dedicated transports are still limited to one of each, not one per transported unit. ex; 1 rhino, one razorback, one land raider, one drop pod, etc. Troops restrictions are that you may not repeat until you've used at least one of every troop unit ex: 1 tac squad, 1 scout squad, 1 tac squad, 1 scout squad, etc
