PumpkinHead
If I am using the skytyrant formation and I put my Tyrant out in front of the flock of gargoyles leading the pack and they get shot, what happens? 1) Tyranit is closest model so all shots have to wound against T6 2) Majority toughness for the unit is 3, so shots are resolved against T3
andozane
Roll to wound vs majority toughness (this is assuming he is actually part of the unit of gargoyles). Tyrant takes wounds first, making a bunch of Look Out Sir's
PumpkinHead
Yes, the skytyrant formation allows the Tyrant to join a unit of gargoyles as an IC.
AbusePuppy
You would always wound against majority toughness (i.e. the Gargoyles's) in the unit, with two exceptions: in a challenge, and when the squad is reduced to only the Tyrant and one other model. Guest
Though do note that you still apply instant death based on actual toughness of the model wounded, so tyrant isn't t3 for instant death. If treated as an IC, you do get a 2+ look out sire to pass the wound within 6" of the tyrant (same unit only).
WestRider
Yeah, the Majority Toughness thing is one of the big drawbacks of the SkyTyrant Swarm. Both times I've run it, I ended up losing the Tyrant just due to getting hit with ridiculous number of basic Attacks that spilled over onto the Tyrant. AbusePuppy
That's why I'm fairly unimpressed by the Skytyrant Swarm. Being T6 and flying are what make Hive Tyrants good- it makes them ridiculously resistant to most types of shooting. Their armor save, once they have to start rolling dice, is only actually a 3+, no better than any other MEQ, so if you're being forced to take a lot of saves (because of Poison or the like), they actually tend to fall down fairly fast.
Guest
Can the tyrant leave the unit, just like an IC? I mean, could you just use the formation to suck hits for a turn or two, then fly off on his own?
WestRider
Nope. It specifies that he has to stay in the Unit. And, as I read it, he can never Swoop, even if all the Gargs get killed off.

Then I agree, very counter productive.

I guess the melee flyrant is still just a beer and pretzel kind of guy. :(
DisruptiveConduct
Actually there is a new role for the melee flyrant...in melee! FMCs now have jink built in without swooping. The new spore cloud provided by venoms and malans will give yer tyrant a 2+ cover save when gliding. So no need to swoop if yer opponent doesnt have easy ways to negate cover. Now yer tyrant can stay on the ground and be ready to assault whatever he needs to. One nice change that 7th brought.
