AoS at LVO

Very well done event.  AoS lends itself well to matched play, and is a far better system for it than 40k currently.  We've borrowed some of the ideas from LVO in creating the event packet for OFCC's AoS event, as well as some lessons learned from that event with regards to house rules (that we frankly expect to see in the 2nd General's Handbook).

GW had a more sportsman centered result for the event while Best Coast is more of a competative angle,,Best Coast also tracks players ongoing ranking on the ITC circut.

I wouldnt  let the Grand Alliance forums be a good representation of the English AoS scene,,they just have a few very loud posters over there that came from Dakka.

I did not attend but I talked to someone who did and he was generally pretty down about the event. He said he played against a lot of filthy lists, he said it was generally worse than 40k. In one game he got his entire army shot off the board at the top of turn 3. He did say that generally the players were pretty nice. I am hopeful that a lot of these issues will be fixed to some extent with GH2.

Now that Matched play is getting a ton of exposure,,yes there are certainly some "unfun matchups" that arise and yes things are being toned down in the next edition.

One  good thing to look at as to how the LVO event went,,is the winners army list.He was SCE with what appeared to be a very balanced, even "meh" list by net standards. He was a very good player though and adjusted well to the opponents armies.

What it really boiled down to was the OTT lists didnt get any(or enough) favorite opponent votes to place for prizes,,so yeah, bring cheese, get wins but dont make friends,as it should be:)

He may have just got very unlucky with his match ups, or had a very very weak list. What I found most interesting is, he said that his match up actually got worse later into the tournament. Now that really surprises me since they are using best coast app for match ups.

This can happen in the middle of the pack though at any event with swiss format - you get a mix of folks who think they are contenders and bring the nasty list but either aren't as good as they thought, were unlucky or had the inevitable paper to their rock.  Its usually the top and low end that tend to have their best games toward the end.  Everyone else in the middle is a mix.

Every game was a challenge for me.  When you only have 17 models in your army, every single one counts more than normal.  It was fun though.  I knew it was going to be tough, prior to getting on the plane.

Yah you don't get a much more competitive event than something like an LVO or Adeptacon, I would bet. I know I am not at the skill level to play in something like that.

LVO was an amazing event. The quality of the players and the armies was outstanding. Getting to chat with the GW guys from across the pond was also great. This was my first year, but I'll definitely go again next year.

My Sylvaneth had 2 Major Wins and 4 Major Losses which is as well as I expected having only played a half dozen gams previously, and fielding half my army (Alarielle and 9 Kurnoth Hunters) for the first time.

I played the guy with the Stormcast army who won the tournament. He was a nice guy and very focused player. I surrendered at the bottom of Turn 3, he'd already destroyed my heavy hitters and gained an insurmountable lead in VP's.

I also played the guy who "won" the Wooden Spoon after losing all 6 rounds. His army seemed solid, Flesh Eater Courts w/ 2 heroes on Terrorgheists with tons (60?) of ghouls and a battalion. He let his Ghoul King Terrorgheist lead the charge and when I took it down, he surrendered immediately.

I also had great games against an old school Empire (Win) and Brettonian (Loss) armies, and newer Ogre and Death armies.

Vegas is a blast anytime. Adding 6 rounds of gaming only makes it better.
