Sacrificing Virgins (in film)

What's the basis for this one? Why virgins? Is the idea that virgins are "better" sacrifices because they are superior? Or is it more that they are less likely to have their own families and children left behind, so they are politically better choices...? Or is it a plot device to establish that female damsel has been sleeping around?

Pagan sacrifices of an untouched (virgin) maiden (12-16?) are the inspiration. How much of this is over embellished stories coming from christian imperialism, and how much of it is a common practice? Meh.

Yeah, but in film. Where did it start? And what's the basis?

And regarding pagan, you do understand that the word doesn't really refer to any specific religion. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pagan

So it's not really credible to souce "pagans" as doing anything because it doesn't really refer to any group, just points the finger at other groups. It's like saying "they" did it.

I'd rather see a virgin sacrificed than an experienced go-er...no reason to let all that f**k knowledge go to waste

But in film, their just an actor anyway. In a film them actually being a virgin has no basis, it's just an element of the plot. I'm curious why that plot element came to be, or mattered in the first place. Does virgin mean something different now than it first did in film?

Fair. Though, I'd guess the theme probably appeared in a silent movie before the phrase "sacrificing virgins" first appeared.

But that bit of random speculation is as far as my interest goes.

As IK mentioned, much of the source for this is stories rooted in Christian imperialism, during times when there wasn't any distinction commonly made in Christian nations between various pagan religions. A faith was either Christian or it wasn't. Stories like these were used to reinforce that divide. It's us and them. And they're bad. They sacrifice virgins, y'know. So you know they're bad. That sort of thing. It was propaganda, just to show how Europeans were morally superior to everyone else. And it was done often enough that it became a trope, and was used in books, and in the theatre, and (when they came around) in movies.

Yes, I make it a practice to not use words without understanding their meanings. 🤓
