  1. Can you do a Sternguard squad with combi-melta's in a drop pod instead? I also like the Vindicare Assassin. The MM Land Speeders would be a good choice too.
  2. The Tau box is full of stuff anyone would use, except for maybe the Stealth Suits. But one more unit of Stealth Suits and you would be able to field the Optimized Stealth Cadre. Their is a Pathfinder squad with a Devilfish (all the markerlights!), a Tau Commander, Broadside, and Ghostkeel. You wouldn't want to field that force as is, but if you were just starting a Tau army, you would use all the contents of that box at some point. It really looks like these box sets have had some thought put into them as a viable starter army- not a starter army for play, but an actual starter for the army.
  3. Finally showed up to Guardian Games on Monday. Came to the conclusion that I'm really, really rusty at the game, and that there are far too many Cygnar and Retribution players here. Might have to fall back on my tertiary faction- Khador or even finally start that Protectorate or Cryx army I've been thinking about... Asked the guys about Press Gangers, and they mentioned a name that was unfamiliar to me. Shot an e-mail off to the Quarter Master at Privateer Press and he confirmed that he has no Press Gangers on his books except me for this area. So if you are a PG in these parts, you might want to shoot James an e-mail to update your status. The GroupMe app is wonderful if you are already in the group. I kind of value my privacy a bit, so having "random" WM/H players ping me for a game feels intrusive to me. Also, the guys said they run Steamrollers all the time, and other events too, like there is a Foodmachine event happening in December. I said great! Where are the details? Who is running it? When? How many points? etc. etc. And I got a lot of blank looks. Apparently there was a huge event last month, a Team Tournament at a convention center around here that had 30+ players. Again, I asked where was this advertised? Was it advertised? Who organized it? And again, lots of blank looks. I'm seeing a pattern here. If you are here and in the group, you are plugged in and know when all the events are happening and where. If you are new to the area/outsider... well, you're SOL. I'd like to try and help change that. I certainly love running events more than I like playing in them. So I'd be more than happy to help run anything in these parts. Time for some more exploration...
  4. Disregard. Thought I was in the Age of Sigmar forum.
  5. I have to laugh at the Ironjawz box. It's not that good, and a giant? The giant isn't Ironjawz faction, so if you Match Play, the box has no Battleline units. Brutes, Gore Gruntas, and 'Ardboys are only Battleline units in an Ironjawz army. Throwing the giant in there makes the box a Destruction faction army, and Ironjawz have no Battleline units in the Destruction faction. The Stormcast Eternals looks pretty good as does the Slyvaneth. Not too sure on the Khorne box. If it had the standard bearer- Bloodsecrator?, it might be good. It's hard to tell what's in the box (no, it's not Gweneth Paltrow's severed head...). The 40K boxes don't look too bad. Not a complete army by a long shot. Well, they could be, but not a very good one. ;) Still, they are supposedly solid deals, and if you wanted to start an army of that faction, well, here you go.
  6. Chariots have some of the most ambiguous, worst rules in 40K. Do yourself a favor and just don't play with them.
  7. It is a draft FAQ, and maybe, someday, they will actually clean it up and release it. It's only bee what, six months since they asked for feedback on the draft?
  8. Yeah, it's called as many guys as can fit. Or, it carries as many grunts as it needs to.
  9. You read too much and give Gee Dub far too much credit for ideas when it comes to a game of little plastic toy soldiers on a make believe battlefield.
  10. It's obvious the ancient Egyptians couldn't build the Pyramids without Xenos help. The first time the Emperor saw pic-captures of Prospero, he should have condemned the Thousand Sons immediately and declared them heretics for using Xenos to help them build Prospero. I always thought of Space Wolves as "Space Vikings"- cruising around the Galaxy, getting drunk and fighting all the time. They want to get Russ back because that dude knew how to PAR-TY. Think about it: He's at a victory feast, hanging with his Bros and Hoes (Sisters of Silence- women who can't talk. Think about that for a second!). He's feeling good, has a great buzz on, but the party is kinda lame when suddenly, an idea strikes him. He stands up, grabs his best Bros and Hoes, and declares "I'm going out, and I'll be back!" The Bros left behind are all kinda sad, and they expect Russ to come back to the Lame Party. But Russ is already moved on to the next party. Bjorn was left behind, because someone had to take one for the team. He's the Ultimate Bro, and he's not bitter about it at all. For the first time in almost 10,000 years, a Space Wolf comes along that could be a part of Russ' Posse- Ragnar Blackmane. Ragnar grew up listening to the legendary tales of Russ, thinks it's all gak, but loves the idea, so he tries to live up to the Legend. If he keeps it up, maybe Russ will hear about this cool Dawg throwin' the best party in the 41st Millennium and come jam with him.
  11. Indeed! That's the Dread I hope gets charged. Wall of Fire and Death! LOL
  12. Last one went over well enough! Looking forward to this one.
  13. I'm just saying some armies get huge benefits from scenery, and some armies get nothing out of it. In matched play, how do you price the value of scenery warscrolls? How many points is a Balewind Vortex? How many points are the Sylvaneth Woods? What about a Realm Gate? The Garden of Mor? Down in Salem last month during Annihilation 5, each of the boards had scenery pieces with warscrolls for them. I would have no problem going to a tournament where a tournament organizer has set up the terrain and has warscrolls for that terrain. That way, picking sides and deployment will matter a lot more. I would hope the TO would also do his/her best to make sure everyone got a shot at different tables, and that certain armies wouldn't always get the best terrain for themselves. How are these other tournaments handling scenery warscrolls? Are they just allowing people to bring whatever they want? Because again, some armies get way, way more benefits from specific warscroll scenery than others. Threejacks, your proposal from my perspective just doesn't work. There are no points value for the terrain, and the value for that terrain varies dramatically from army to army. Specific example: My Ironjawz would get no benefit from taking a Balewind Vortex or Sylventh woods. My Shaman is probably one of the worst Wizards in the game, and every list I've seen so far, and the advice I've been given says "don't take him". The Sylventh woods mean nothing to me but cover. But to someone playing a magic heavy army, they would want a Balewind Vortex for their wizard to give him double range on his spells and +1 for casting and dispelling. Sylvanth want all those woods for all the benefits it gives their army. Allowing those armies to bring whatever scenery warscroll they want gives them a huge advantage over those armies that get no benefit from the same piece of scenery. There must be some kind of regulation or intrinsic value system for scenery warscrolls before allowing a player to bring whatever they want.
  14. I knew that FW used a lot of Tamaya paints and airbrushing, and they were able to get away with it because GW treated them like Red Headed Bastard Step Children. Now that FW is "back in the fold" of GW, the use of non-GW branded stuff has come to a halt. You used to have to mail FW and ask them "how did you paint X model?" and they were really good about answering the question, but it was full of non-GW paints and airbrushing. Now, they politely point you to Warhammer TV. I have noticed that they have "officially" changed the paint recipe for most of the 30K line to GW paints. In the grand scheme of things, does that really matter? Nah. They still paint things very, very well. As in, I wish I could paint half as well as some of those guys. The only reason I use GW paint is because I'm lazy and hate to mix my colors. It's nice to be able to buy an (overpriced) paint pot of the exact color I want/need, instead of playing the role of Alchemist as I carefully measure a couple drops of this, a couple drops of that, add medium, and hope for the best.
  15. If it's a mission with objectives and you have to get somewhere, most opponent's will deploy right on that line so they can reach objectives. And if you are facing another assault based army, they probably won't care if you get into close combat on turn 1. Hell, they might even want you to. They only weakness I see would be against your typical threats- Drop Pod Armies of DOOOooom! and Flyers. Not much intercept or Skyfire in the list, so you have to depend on 24" range, snap shot TL Assault Cannons on the Baal Preds to bring any flyers down. Might be something to consider. Overall, I like the list! But you really need to get the charge off, and not get charged, or you lose all those fantastic bonuses! Looking forward to seeing it on the table!
  16. Did you see the "Experimental" rules for the Custodian Grave Tank? 195 points, AV 13, Fast Skimmer Tank, 3 HP, Flare Shields, the autocannon is like the Sicarian's, but inflicts instant death, and you are -2 to hit in melee with it because it's a skimmer? The Grav Rhino is confirmed! I also like the candy apple red and gold paint job they did on one of the Grav Tanks using the new GW Translucent Paints. Though the matt red and gold they did on the other tank with all the free hand on it looks pretty nifty too. I didn't realize that was a Contemptor Custodian. I thought it was a Terminator, but with it standing next to Freki (or is it Gerki?), I can see it being the right size for it. If that shield is anything like the Blizzard Shield they gave to the Space Wolves Dreadnought... whew. 3++ in the front arc? On a Contempor? Wow! Damn, they are pushing those new Imperial Knight heads HARD. Just seems like a pretty minor accessory that is cosmetic. Now, if they came with some nifty little bonus rules or something, then I could see them being a big deal! Otherwise... meh. I think Gee Dub messed up a bit with the Imperial Knights. They should have given them more weapons choices that Forge World could exploit and sell for extra money like they do for Titans. Can't wait to see what other goodies come out of the Forge World Open Weekend!
  17. I would be kind of against this because Scenary Warscrolls have no point value (that I'm aware of), and certain terrain pieces would be way, way more advantageous to some armies with no equivalent. For example, Sylvaneth and Sylvaneth Wood are terrifying to me, while Ironjawz at best would get cover from any terrain piece and nothing else. Now if there was a terrain piece that gave me Waagh! bonuses, or extra charge range or something, then sure! But unique scenery in this game is very Wizard centric, with some Priest bonuses, and then a couple that are usable by Hero's. Another example, the Garden of Mor for Death models. That thing screams broken as Hell for a Death Hero Wizard- which is every Vampire. Or just about any terrain piece that I can garrison with a bunch of shooting models. As there is no limit to the amount of models that can garrison a building (only limits warscrolls), an Ork player could throw his 40+ Archer Boys or whatever they are called inside the building, and happily shoot at anything within range all game long, and there would be nothing you could do about it because only two models in the game right now can destroy scenery. What rule in matched play allows players to bring their own scenery warscroll? Some armies get fantastic bonuses for certain types of warscroll scenery that they would always take, while others get no real benefit at all.
  18. Right. With the release of the General's Handbook and the overall nerfing of summoning, do we really need a list of models that count as Wizards, and all the models that buff wizards? If the answer is yes, than can you update it to include the armies and models that have been released since December of 2015? The new Stormcast Eternals, Fyreslayers, Sylvaneth, all the Chaos stuff, and the Ironjawz? I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff in that list as well. Maybe add another list of "Command Abilities and Artifacts that affect magic"?
  19. Just curious what the relevance is? Seems like every faction (Order, Death, Destruction, Chaos) has multiple Wizards, or ways to buff/bonuses for Wizards. It's almost like "Which units can shoot? " or "What units are Lords?" etc. etc. Seems like "Gee Whiz" info to me.
  20. Hey Power's that Be! Can we review the relevance and accuracy of the sticky's in this forum? I just glanced through them and a lot of info seems out of date or no longer being maintained/updated. What does everyone want to see in sticky's? 1. Link to Squad Builder is awesome 2. Link to Official GW FAQ's After that, I'm not really sure what else you could sticky. The OFC "House Rules" needs a thorough going over because of the General's Handbook and AoS FAQ. The list of Wizards is interesting, but it's over a year old now, and a lot of stuff has come out since then. Points and comp systems are, again, a bit moot now that we have the "Official" points, comp, and campaign rules from GW. A nice link would be to Warhammer TV and painting AoS miniatures. GW has been doing an excellent job on those tutorials. If someone is so inclined or can find them online, maybe a post to the Pitched Battles from the General's Handbook? You know, the "battles"? Oh, and a link to the scenery special rules. The are kinda hidden at the GW website. Finally, one thing that would interest me is a list of all the Army Warscrolls that are in the game, and how/where to get them. I'm talking the one off warscrolls you get for buying a particular unit or box set.
  21. Is this still current/relevant? Looks like the last time anything was updated was over a year ago.
  22. This sticky could probably use some clean up. All the links to points system, balance, and campaigns are a moot point now that the General's Handbook has been released. The Scroll Builder link is awesome, and maybe another link to the official GW FAQ would be good.
  23. Forge World already has a reputation for "borken" models. If they went too far with the formations in DoM, people would have screamed bloody murder. I like 30K because of the no formation rules, and the Rites of War basically are formations, so /shrug. For some reason, I was thinking you had to take an HQ for your warlord, and that detachment became your Primary detachment. I must be getting senile in my old age.
  24. The Custodians and Sisters of Silence could not be your primary detachment (no HQ unit... yet), but they do have detachment rules, thus making them an "army" in 40K. So you could spend like 300 points on a Space Marine Librarian and two min sized units of Marines, and spend the rest of your points on Custodians. And then you could add a third detachment of Sisters of Silence...
