pretre Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 ia Warhammer 40,000 Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/Warhammer-40000These 4 new Battleforce sets are on the way next month (just in time for Christmas.)Bigger even than our Start Collecting sets, each is an ideal way to begin a new army. They also come in suitably large boxes that look great wrapped and under a tree – which is after all, what Christmas is all about...They will be on sale soon. For other great gift ideas this Christmas, check out our Boxed Games, including the awesome Burning of Prospero, and the recently returned classic Blood Bowl. via Age of Sigmar Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/GWWarhammerAgeofSigmarThe cold chill of winter rolls in across the Mortal Realms (apart from the Realm of Fire – it's still pretty hot there) and with it, 4 new Battleforce sets.Bigger even than our Start Collecting boxes, each is an ideal way to begin a new army and all make great Christmas gifts. 2 Quote
InfestedKerrigan Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 DW should've had a Libby. AdMech is mildly tempting. Quote
Tamwulf Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 I have to laugh at the Ironjawz box. It's not that good, and a giant? The giant isn't Ironjawz faction, so if you Match Play, the box has no Battleline units. Brutes, Gore Gruntas, and 'Ardboys are only Battleline units in an Ironjawz army. Throwing the giant in there makes the box a Destruction faction army, and Ironjawz have no Battleline units in the Destruction faction. The Stormcast Eternals looks pretty good as does the Slyvaneth. Not too sure on the Khorne box. If it had the standard bearer- Bloodsecrator?, it might be good. It's hard to tell what's in the box (no, it's not Gweneth Paltrow's severed head...). The 40K boxes don't look too bad. Not a complete army by a long shot. Well, they could be, but not a very good one. ;) Still, they are supposedly solid deals, and if you wanted to start an army of that faction, well, here you go. Quote
WestRider Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 I'm assuming they'll have some sort of Formation in the Box for them, or something, because otherwise the Tau and AdMech ones aren't fieldable. The AdMech one isn't very good, anyhow, with both Sicarians and Electro-Priests in there. The SW one is mostly usable stuff, but it doesn't combine well into a single Army. Trying to go two or three different directions at once there. I'm not hugely experienced with Tau, but that box also looks like a pretty bad mish-mash from what I do know. The DeathWatch looks like the best of the lot as an actual starter Army. Quote
Tamwulf Posted November 17, 2016 Report Posted November 17, 2016 The Tau box is full of stuff anyone would use, except for maybe the Stealth Suits. But one more unit of Stealth Suits and you would be able to field the Optimized Stealth Cadre. Their is a Pathfinder squad with a Devilfish (all the markerlights!), a Tau Commander, Broadside, and Ghostkeel. You wouldn't want to field that force as is, but if you were just starting a Tau army, you would use all the contents of that box at some point. It really looks like these box sets have had some thought put into them as a viable starter army- not a starter army for play, but an actual starter for the army. Quote
AbusePuppy Posted November 17, 2016 Report Posted November 17, 2016 Yeah, it feels like the Tau box is an "expansion" box rather than a starter box- if you already bought the Tau starter force, this adds a bunch of points to your army without doubling up on anything (which everyone knows is a sin.) Stealth Suits aren't as bad as people tend to make them out to be, though they're obviously not fantastic- but the OpStealth Cadre certainly is. The box as a whole can "introduce" a player to a bunch of new units in a controlled format, which is what GW tends to like. 1 Quote
IW Raptors Posted November 17, 2016 Report Posted November 17, 2016 The Tau starter set and this new one, depending on price, look like a pretty good way into Tau. I was very happy with the starter set, even as an existing Tau player, good value. The op stealth is an obvious way to go with the Ghostkeel and stealth suits when you expand, the pathfinder and broadside formation is pretty good as well. The Devilfish got hit hard by the draft FAQ, the jink and no aura out of transports stinks big time. The Ethereal and strike team/breachers in a Devilfish went from nice and fun, to this is silly. Still, iirc the Devilfish can easily be made into a Skyray if you search eBay for the turret. Or you can like me, a proud owner of two devilfish and 3 skyrays/hammerheads, pray to mojo that GW change the draft FAQ or discard it for eight! Mech Tau will ride again! ( I was so happy about the combo of Ghostkeel wing, breachers in devilfishes and skyrays upon release of the codex, as I used to love mech Tau back in 4th edition and still have the vehicles.) Quote

Just from the labelling, it's pretty clear that a new player should buy a "getting started" set and that these battleforces are for the more committed player. Quote

Pax, you should read their marketing before making a statement like that. Quote
Guest Posted November 17, 2016 Report Posted November 17, 2016 Pax, you should read their marketing before making a statement like that. That's an ad, not the label. They'll say anything. Just like those ads for films, which seem to have nothing to do with the film, and sometimes even include music not in the film. And if you want to get technical, those battleforces are only for people wanting to start a new army this christmas. So if you want a new army, but you want it on any other day, this ad says these products aren't for you... Quote
