evil_bryan
When I was planning my Genestealer Cult army, I thought it would be a perfect excuse to use the GW Sector Imperialis bases. During my research, I found an excellent example of how to paint them. Thankfully, the creator built a great guide on how he completed these. You can find that guide with the following link: http://www.modernsynthesist.com/2016/11/sector-imperialis-easy-urban-basing.html With inspriation in hand, it was time to take this project on! Every project needs to start somewhere, so here are all the bases clipped and cleaned up. The next step was to arrange the bases for priming. I have mounted them to strips of 2" painters tape to a box lid or some cardboard. In my case, I use a Battle for Skull Pass box. I followed the guide with regards to priming. Staring with black, then grey, and finally white with a concentration of color in the center of the base. This was done with the airbrush. Now, it was time to start painting. Also folowing the guide, I started blocking in colors with washes. This was all done with a brush, and I followed the same color scheme for each base design. I found it easier to paint them while they were still mounted to the box. In hindsight, I should have group the various base designs together to make this process easier. After blocking in the color, I removed each base design from the box and added the final details (additional washes, black banding, etc.) This first set benefited from the priming method the best, with a cool gradient seen radiating from the center of the base. The rest of the sets all turned out pretty well, but I knew they would not need to be perfect to look good as a group. Here is the final shot of the 32mm bases. Even though the color pallette changes from design to design, I thought I should do just a couple of things to marry them together. All bases were given a very light dabbing of Typhus Corrosion to add some dirt effect, and all were dry brushed with Screaming Skull (although any off white color would have worked.) I am excited to have these completed, but this only marks the halfway point since I still have the 25mm bases to complete. :) UPDATE!!! I felt compelled to keep working today, so I decided to tackle the 25mm bases. Learning my lesson from the 32mm, I decided to group the designs together That made the process easier, and with enough time I was able to finish all 120 of the 25mm bases Here is the beauty shot for the 25mm bases You may be asking yourself how difficult it is to black band 240 bases? Well, thankfully GW + ingenuity make this a little easier. Each Sector Imperialis base come with ~3mm hole in the center of the base bottom. With the aid of my cordless drill and a rod of custom mounting (otherwise known as a tapered styrene rod), I was able to get through this chore. :)
WestRider
Very nice! I've been using the SI bases for my Iron Warriors, and I really like them. Planning on using them for 30K Alpha Legion as well. Speaking of which, if you've got any of the 40mm ones left over (since they come with the 25s), I'll totally buy some of them off of you. I need some for Lernean Terminators, but I don't need any 25s.

jpwyrm
I just bought a box of 32mm sector imperialis bases after seeing the tutorial linked on the first post. Those results are quite motivating to get painting. Good job!

alexcragg
Took me a while to figure out how to add photos, silly archaic forum interfaces.
PourSpelur
Looking good! The dusty orange/ greyed blue scheme really makes the dark colors pop.
alexcragg
Thanks! It's the 4th time I have based this army since 2007, and I think I finally found a scheme worth keeping. Now I just need to do the rest of my CSM, thankfully their new book has me excited to actually play them again.
