Dark Angels have a lot of hobby potential too, what with the Raven Wing and Death Wing subfactions. Would your nephew be ok playing a traitor army, though?

I think Salamanders have a lot going for them. The rerolls are nice, plus who doesn't like purging the heretic with fire? Also, the color scheme is pretty easy for a beginner.

Tim Powers' Alternate Routes: It feels like an action-y Fault Lines novel, with the requisite mythological weirdness combined with the living treating the dead badly. I enjoyed it (it is Tim Powers after all) but it isn't as good as the Fault Lines titles, Anubis Gates, or Declare.

I love infiltrators, vanguard moves, Kunnin' but Brutal... really, any deployment-related shenanigans. GSC are irresistible. Bloody GW and their cool stuff.

FWIW, I find that laser-cut MDF terrain paints up a lot better if you give it an initial 'primer' layer of Mod Podge. I have a couple of FLG Necron Obelisk things and the Mod Podge really helped with paint coverage, preventing primer absorption, etc.
