I had my plans ruined by Eric's TR bot again, that thing has some kind of voodoo melted into the metal.  Serious juju.

I was rolling with:

2x TO camo FO Order Sergeants

TO camo Order Sergeant sniper

MSV2 Order Sergeant with spitfire

Order Sergeant hacker
Bulleteer with spitfire

Bulleteer with heavy shotgun

Sierra Dronbot (TR bot)

Fusilier

Fusilier hacker

Fusilier lieutenant

Brother Konstantinos

Engineer

Doc with Palbot

Even though I conceited by the end of my first turn, it was still a fun game.  RD brought a reverend custodier, healer, and moria; a sin-eater, hellcat, TR bot, specter, and some cheerleaders.   A good balance of what nomads have to offer.

In his turn he droped his hellcat down and managed to down my shotgun TR bot, only to have him capped off my a crit with my TO serg. a few orders later.  After that he buffed up his TR bot and took mine down, then dropped a few mines and ended his turn.  At this point things were pretty even, THEN CAME MY TURN!

I started off with my TO serg on the left flank and climbed up a building, went back to TO, and worked up to get a surprise shot on his TR bot.   Long story short, I shot with the odds hugely in my favor for 3 orders and then died.  *sigh*.   Next, I moved Brother K up  on the other flank to get a shot off on his sniper.  I got into position and had decent odds against him (my 3 6's against his one 9).  He rolled a 5, I rolled a 19, 2, and 7 *sigh*   Brother K fails an armor save and goes down.  At this point I'm low on orders, so I bring up my TO sniper and take shots at his bot.   His sin-eater can hit me on 1's, his sniper on very low, and his TR bot on low.   I eat a crit, sniper dies.   I concede.

I did enjoy the game, but wish my rolling had been a little more forgiving!   The list is well-rounded and is fun to play, so I'll give it a few more runs before i refine it.  This wasn't the best game to base performance off of :)

And this is what makes me apprehensive about Infinity! That a game can be over by turn one. We've all seen the Warhammer game or 40k game where the game was over before it started but in actuality the game itself went 3-4 turns. How often does this happen that a game of infinity ends this quickly?

The big difference is, in 40K, when it's your opponent's turn to do things, you generally don't get to do squat except watch, make armor saves and pull handfuls of figures off the table.

In Infinity, there is a lot you can do during your opponent's turn. Not as much as when it's your active turn, of course, but still quite a bit. I thought the same thing when I started. "This scenario ends after turn 3? Why so fast?" And then you find out why after playing a few games. :)

In a game like 40K, you get to 'activate' a figure 4-7 times a game, during each of your turns. Each figure gets to activate once each turn. In Infinity, you have the potential of activating a single figure 0-7 (or more) times *each turn*... but at the expense of not activating other figures *at all*. But it's entirely *your decision* who you activate, and how much/often (within the limits of your order pool). Another thing I feared when I started was the 'Activate one bad-ass a bunch of times each turn', and while that is potentially possible, it also might not be very efficient, especially in scenarios involving objectives.

As others have mentioned, the best thing to do is to play a few demo games and find out for yourself. See if your apprehension goes away or if it only gets worse. Infinity isn't for everyone... just as 40K or Warmachine isn't, either. Reading about it is one thing - going through the motions a few times (BEFORE sinking $ into it) is highly recommended. :)

indytim is spot on, and i repeat.

A couple of games in, and the dogma of old games out, you'll see how to handle/evade/predict such one shot plays (which when failed are almost always death).

Aro shoot is not always the answer.

Not everyone has to be looking the same way (watch your six).

AD combat jump is how you will learn that ^ lesson ONCE hahaha

List building gets you only so far, order use gets you farther.

The only reason the game was over by turn one is that I decided to cut my losses and called it.  In a tournament setting there are usually objectives outside of just kill missions, so it's unlikely that we would have spent all our time focused on troop devastation.  I've honestly only had 2 games that didn't go the full length, and I rarely see it happen to anyone else either.

The holiday season means a vacation from terrain, so I haven't done anything this week.   If I feel motivated today I will make a few more ladders and bridges.

In other news, my first Haqq models came in the mail today: the old-school ghulam with panzerfaust.   Really looking forward to getting more together and having a second army to mess around with!

Finally got in a win against Nate's Aleph last night with this list (going from memory, I might have some models in the wrong groups).

Nate brought the usual Aleph beat-sticks.  Machaon, Scylaa, an HMG guarda, Minelayer Naga, TO something or other, TR bot, sensor bot, a couple dakini and a few other things.  Prinkle with netrods for extra flavor.

Turn one: Pano
-I spent a couple orders taking out his TR bot with the link team sniper.  DA ammo is the shiz when you have B3.

-Brother K tried some long-range shots at Machaon, but lost out to smoke dodge.

-My MSV2 spitfire took out a netrod then discovered a mine (boo).

-I moved a shotgun bot up to cover that corridor, but, due to me owning the wrong sized templates, misjudged the distance and went down to explosions.

-Crusader came on from the board edge and killed another netrod.

Turn one: Aleph

-Nate began moving up Machaon and Scylla under the cover of smoke. I brought my other sniper out to try and pick him off, but missed terribly.

-As they crossed my crusader I managed to take down one of Scylla's bots in ARO.

-Nate suicide ran the other bot up, flamed two members of my link, and shot and Brother K with Scylla.

-My link went down to 3, but Brother K won face-to-face, causing Scylla to fall back.

Turn 2: Pano

-Either my Crusader or Spitfire managed to take down Machaon and put an end to his zero-v smoke madness.

-Crusader pushed out and tried to flame the naga but failed, made my armor and lived.

-I took suicide shots and scylla, taking a shotgun to the face from the naga.  Scylla went down, and I made another armor save with the crusader.
-In this turn the crusader also took out the last net rod, and possibly the sensor bot.  He was on a roll.

-To end the turn, my palbot walked up to the two unconscious members of my link team and promptly killed them both.  Go go pano healing.

Turn 2: Aleph
-Nate drops his guarda down behind my crusader bot and promptly tears him to pieces.  RIP, buddy.
-He pushes forward and gets into position to take shots at my TR bot.  My bot, behaving like Raindog's, lands a crit on the guarda and keeps him from advancing.
-Nate moves a few models forward into position, and does some things with the naga that I can't remember.  Though I remember now I wanted to look up if having camo burned off removes the stealth ability, as I genuinely had no idea.

Turn 3: Pano
-Not Sure I did much this turn.  Likely there are things I posted from turn 2 but forgot about, and they should be here.

Turn 3: Aleph

-Same as above.  Nate brought his TO model out of hiding but neither of us did anything, and soon after we called the game.

This was my first time using any kind of drop troop, and he was absolutely the MVP of the game for me.  Multi-Rifle+light flame is an awesome load-out for a troop that starts out up close to the enemy.  I need more practice with him, but I'll be working him into more lists from now on.  Other than that my main goal in this game was to try and improve my list in the reactive turn.  Having two snipers and a TR bot made a lot of the board out-of-bounds without smoke, which was crazy important for keeping his army from advancing any more.   2 multi-snipers in general is crazy good, though I looked over it now and realized that unlike multi rifles and normal sniper rifles, they don't have shock ammo.  Anyways, thanks to Nate for the game, I hope to see you around next Sunday!

that list was absolutely superb imo.  and you placed things perfectly as well!  scylla vs bro k was a terrible decision by me.  didnt realize mimetism.  not realizing that your crusader could see the bot was also a mistake on my part.  should have thrown some more smoke lol.. bringing your msv2 guy to kill machaon was well done.  i knew i was playing a bit risky there and you made me pay for it!  i actually wanted to surprise shot your TR bot with my naga but i didnt think i could get within 8 inches of it before you discovered me so thats why i went with the garuda there to try and take him.   garuda isnt actually ideal to me to go against your TR bot cause you are hitting still on decent numbers and im only +4 to you.  playing against your list was great cause it actually taught me quite a bit about the weaknesses of my play and that i probably need another long range gun... enter pheonix next week :P plus he gives regular smoke so i can use that msv2 spitfire deva a little better!  i want a rematch against something like that!  was fun to play against and tough!  although i do like your knight fun... for ITS you should bring something like that and then maybe a knight list so you have a mix of fun things!

oh PS: you freaking deserved that crit against that garuda after how annoying he's been to you and your dice helping him out in previous games!

Yeah, the Garuda (which I keep writing as guarda, again, dsilyxaia) has been a huge thorn in my side.  That being said, you more than anyone else has taught me that I need to keep my backfield covered.

And thanks for the compliment on the list.  I think I've found what really works for me with the MO, and it's rarely spamming heavy infantry.   Still, I would love to get more experience with the magisters of hospitaller link, as both can wreck face.  I think that I'll work on an ITS combo where I have one Magister list for board control and carnage, and another similar to my list from Sunday for objective grabs and defense.

yea i thought you said you had a regular sniper rifle?  cause those have shock.  multi's are DA or AP.  i would have said that if you said it was multi :P  i dont think it mattered anyways.  didnt think the snipers hit anyone except maybe that devabot

Well there's a garuda tactbot and then there's the guarda de assaulto. There's also Marut and morats. There's others as well. Don't worry I have slight dyslexia as well! George uses HI heavy and does very well with it. I think magisters links are amazing..

Well, that's what I get for skimming and not reading the full context; I saw PanO and just assumed the Guarda de Assaulto.  I'll be quiet now

(Also, apologies to anyone who does have dyslexia, I can see how my posts may not have been very sensitive to that)

Thanks to Raindog I got two games in tonight using two different lists.   One list was fun (Seraph for the win!) the other was meant to play to the supplies scenario a little better.  This was the scenario list:

The other was similar, but subtract some of the useful toys for a big-ass robot.   Even though I lost in the game with the Seraph, it was still a ton of fun.  That things has more potential then people give it credit.

I managed a small victory in the second game by being the only one with any supplies at the end, but it was a hard-fought battle.   I grabbed one objective early with my TO sergeant and pulled it back closer to my deployment zone.  After that I focused more on trying to keep him off objectives, and depleting orders.   He had great board control with his sniper and absolutely dominated my lines in his third turn.  Fortunately for me he couldn't grab anything in the final turn and I took a minor win away.

From this game I learned mostly what I did in my last game with Nate, that the Crusader with multi rifle and light flamethrower is AWESOME.  He gave me a big boost in my 2nd turn, and then ruined RD's day when he came around the corner to shoot me and I unexpectedly flamed him back.   Both our troops died, but it was a terrific moment for me.  Brother K. is also an insanely good unit for his price.  I will take the specialist version of him in nearly all ITS missions, as he is a huge toolkit for the price.

All in all a good night of games, I look forward to playing more.

Put a little ink on a couple of order sergeants and assembled/based the djanbazan hacker that I picked up.  I didn't realize before that the djanbazan was rocking the high midriff until putting it together, I always though it was just tan cloth/armor.   Kind of a bummer, but I can always paint it as a non-skin tone and it will look fine.  My terrain is all still boxed up in the car, and I have zero motivation to go outside and get soaked to work on it tonight.  Still, some progress is better than none!

  • 2 weeks later...

Life keeps getting in the way of hobby.  I'm looking to get a second gig with a friend of mine who is a caterer, which will certainly be even more of a strain on free-time.  But today, I did manage to sit down and focus on getting a bit of painting done.

Got the inking done on 6 models, going to try and get the MO boys done before I get too tangled up into QK.  A few of the models I'm going to re-prime so that I can get them done in the new color scheme.  Other than that all I need to complete the list from higher up on this page is an actual palbot, instead of a snail.  I also need the real brother K model, but a basic Teutonic Knight with combi actually makes for an outstanding proxy.
