  1. Hear yee, hear yee, the benevolent King has decree that Knights shall no longer be the sole sword and shield of the rhelm. We call upon the brave peasants to take up arms and show their valor, skill, and ability to stand and be slain by greater foes. The burdens of war must be shared, and all subjects are equally capable of giving their lives to this honor. Hence we share the wrath and horrors of war, for the Kingdoms of Equality-tane see no titles.

Except for the King of course...

    -------------------

Since blogs are super in vogue, I am starting one up. I am starting a KoE army! Why might you ask? Because I have a huge mini addiction problem, and TBH I am already a little bored of dwarves' abysmal charge range. I wanted to flip this on it's head and over compensate with an army that prides itself on cavalry hammers.

I am going with FireForge games for just about everything. The main reason is they are the easiest to put together and have the least amount of mold lines (both of which are my least favorite part of the hobby). They are about on par with Perry miniatures for price and have a reasonable amount of detail and diversity.

For now I am experimenting on production line painting and how I can utilize airbrushing to it's fullest potential. This first batch of 8 peasants I painted almost entirely on sprue, then clipped them out, touched up where the sprue attached to the bits, repainted those areas, assembled, and hit with strong tone.

    46-CD1370-2-FDE-4-D10-8-A90-D000-C408-BD

    Lessons learned:

    1) The arm attachments to the torso are not necessarily all interchangeable. There are a few torsos that have significantly larger army connection points than others. Therefore, I need to pre-plan what bits will go where before I just start randomly painting stuff on sprue.

    2) Less is more - Due to the previous lesson I learned, I had peasants with different colored shoulders. This was fine as I just kep that split color scheme all the way down the model, but it caused some repainting headaches, and slowed down painting dramatically.

    3) Masking shields is hard - I tried frisket (which is this like masking liquid that dries to something like rubber cement), and masking tape. The frisket is awful. Masking tape worked alright but I need to get a really solid bind between the shield and tape, otherwise paint seeps under the masking tape during air-brushing.

    4) Varnish early, varnish often - I never really used varnish before but I am seeing a lot of value to it. After laying down a base coat on shield specifically, I varnished them which helps seal in the paint. Then I apply masking tape without "de-stickying" the tape first. Normally, blue masking tape will have a tendency to pull your paint off after you remove it. With the varnish, no problems so far.

    5) Strong tone on shields looks bad - It just muddies them up too much. The strong tone works great for anything with texture, but the shields just being flat it looks terrible. I didn't want the tone contrast to be too pronounced though (as everything darkens when you hit it with strong tone). Ill need to come up with something else that darkens the shield tone a bit, but that I can ideally spray through an airbrush for an even coverage.

    6) Everyone has their own mound - This is just sort of annoying, every infantry figure is standing on an amorphous blob mount. Makes for easier build and application to the bases, but looks kind of weird. Need to think of a way to mask that effect with some floc.

Ill be timing the next sprue I build, so ill have better numbers for painting efficiency. With another 62 peasant type infantry to go, I am confident ill find the solution.

I'm currently in the mood to bust out my vampire counts army. I tried reading through the army pdf the other day, but got quickly overwhelmed by all of the new terminology. So some small learning games would be great. Maybe come October I'll be in a place to schedule some games. I gotta see if I can clear out some stuff at the swap meet and then it will provide me room in my office to start working on an army again. 🙂

I don't have any experience with 8th edition VC, but looking at the book I don't blame you for feeling overwhelmed. All the bloodlines and what not makes my head spin.

All the special rules names did get changed, which is a very common theme in T9A, just to protect the project from legal troubles from GW. Overall, the function of the special rules is all pretty much the same. Undead is still unbreakable, the still crumble when they lose combat, and they still have a very powerful raise mechanic that is central to their meta.

One thing to note about reading the new profiles is that rules are almost all un-nested now. By that I mean you dont have to look up the rule "undead" to find out that "undead" also provides "fear" then look up "fear" to find that it also provides immunity to "fear". It is all explicitly stated in the profile just to make things a bit easier. That also has the unfortunate side effect of putting a ton of special rules in the unit profile, which makes it seem like there are more rules, but in reality its the same amount.

  3. I have a Badger Patriot 105 and an Iwata eclipse

Honestly not a huge difference with the eclipse being a little nicer, and its easier to find parts for an Iwata at a local arts store. I find the Iwata a little bit easier for disassembly which is important because you will be cleaning it constantly. Of all the advantages to airbrushing, the cleaning is a huge pain in the rear.

For a compressor, I burned through one of those Master airbrush compressors after about 2 years. They are basically all the same construction, just with different labels slapped on them. I moved way up to a California Air Tools tanked compressor:

    https://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/California-Air-Tools-CAT-2050A-Air-Compressor/p70257.html

I really wanted the tank as to not wear on the motor as much. I also wanted a tank so that I could use this for other applications, such as pneumatic tools. It is "portable" in the sense that it has a handle and can be lifted without blowing out your back. It is probably lough enough that you could not get away with it in an apartment, but quiet enough that it wont wake any but the lightest of sleepers if you are in a separate room. I waited till this was on sale for around $120 when I got it. Certainly overkill for airbrushing, but hopefully it's the last one I need to buy. I think I can get 3-4 minutes of constant air flow before it refills the tank, which takes about 15 seconds.

Not familiar with the rules, but a quick look through, doesn't seem to be too over the top (which can often happen with homebrew rules). I few things I did note:

-Appeaser seems really strong, being able to shut off hatred automatically seems too good.
-Winged Colossal: 3+ armor save on a T6  monster seems high considering it also gets a ward vs how much it is negated by.
-Sentinels seem like a steal at 175, especially since you get to pick your ammo each round. Only 1 unit per army though, but basically 3 Bolt Throwers for the price of 1.

That being said, I certainly wouldn't have a problem playing against this army! Would be good to get a game in with you again sir!

Did you miss the part where they can’t cast or dispel anything? That’s a HUGE nerf.

But ya, looks cool. You should make a list! There may be news of an escalation campaign happening soon for new players and/or new armies. We may have already worked out most of the details. It may be more than me just making this up on the spot.

I guess I had poor link placement. Putting it at the beginning when nobody is going to click it probably was not wise.

Oh man that was a long time ago. Oh gosh was this with 10+ units of skirmishers? I can picture this madness. It brings me pain.

Haha, you said to me "OK, whatever you do, dont charge this unit because I need to shoot at it".

Beginning of turn: "Well, Ripperdactyls fail frenzy, CHARGE!!!"

    John: "I hate you...."

One of my fondest memories of WHFB. We lost that game, badly...

Technically, the torch approach will still work on galvanized steel. But it will create lots of poisonous fumes when you do so. I don't recommend it, but if you find yourself doing it anyway, make sure you have a carbon filter mask on and real ventilation (as in fans that suck the air out).

What are you talking about “torch approach”, are you referring to an acetylene torch? I doubt a torch would work any better than snips. It’s a bit overkill.

@valourunbound what epoxy do you use? I need somthing better than superglue.

that 2v2 btw was at pgs during 8th edition. You and I vs. Terell and Brad. I brought only skink skirmishes, which basically just got in your way all game. That was good times

  7. Thank you to everyone who came out and committed to 15 hours (well 14.5 hours) of wargaming in two days. You are really the weekend warriors that make these events happen.

I'll need to get all of the final details from the tournament from the Ordo laptop (I didn't have a way to transfer them due to the no-internet zone). Ill be uploading photos soon, so stay tuned for that!

Like Ben K. said, Andrew and I are planning on driving down for the Zoo, we could certainly add 1-2 more people to the carpool. Last year we were generously hosted by one of the locals in Davis, I am sure we can secure a similar situation this year.

Finally, because I know Disruptive Conduct will see this. Thank you Ordo for making this event possible. Without Ordo, we may have never met each other and been able to attract new members to our small but growing community.

    'Till next year!

I was planning on being around Friday for open gaming / hang outs, but had some unfortunate circumstances that ate up my PTO. I might try and swing by Friday evening though after my kid falls asleep.

ALSO, I plan on heading over to Tap Union Freehouse after the last round on Saturday for some beers! It's about 5 blocks north from the Hilton. Hope some of my fellow square basers will join me!

That's going to happen AFTER @Raindog's pub quiz.... RIGHT?!

It is a tertiary objective afterall...

I would think a 3D printer would be useful for designing a lip that can be added to a tin sheet. This way you get a nice magnet-friendly base, but no sharp edges. hmmmmmm

The problem is cutting a tin sheet to the proper dimensions. Even with proper "straight cut" tin snips, it is very hard to get a clean straight cut that does not leave small burs and dents in the metal. Although he burs would be less of a problem from your idea (though you have to deal with the burns in so much as they cause a tongue and groove joining not to fit correctly), you still have the problem of curling the metal.

Many moons ago I made a set of 10 metal sheets to run a skirmishing skink swarm (John I'm sure remembers that disastrous 2v2). It worked great for a crude setup and to just get models on the table, but eventually I moved away from that system.

Another problem is using neodymium magnets and sheet metal will cause a LOT of magnetic attraction. This will typically cause your magnets to break out of the base, even when superglued and greestuff'ed in. You also have to be careful with models that are 1 footed, or are otherwise not adhered to the bases in a really robust manner, as breaking the model, or pulling it from the base is the second most common side effect.

  10. *Update*

Thanks to some help from @DisruptiveConduct all 3 trophies have been painted. Final step is to mount them on a piece of wood or something like that. Most of the modeling is done, all I have left is finishing up a stegadon, and painting a BSB and Runesmith. I imagine I will not be getting optimal amounts of sleep this week but it should all get done in time.

Here is to hoping i'm not forgetting something super important 😄
