  1. Looked like a fun tourney - hope everyone had fun. I dropped in with my son around 1:30 to see things finishing up on round #1. I thank you for putting up with gawkers. I went home and finished working on my factions - got to do some basing then some priming - but the game looked fun and I think I have convinced my son to give it a go. -d
  2. I agree with this assessment - although I never read the books (not my type of fantasy... just never appealed to me)... Maybe it would have - but in the 1980's I was pretty deep into Elric (or anything Moorecock), Conan and comics lol. -d
  3. I had trouble with Shannara... the last season was practically unwatchable lol. I long long ago read the first book... name recognition was about all I could remember lol. But THAT show was very CW ... pretty faces... weak ... I MEAN WEAK acting... and pre-2000's BBC-esq special effects lol -d
  4. its about the $ - they make money - that is the only calculus they need. The name recognition will seemingly give it legitimacy to those folks whom vaguely have heard of the books - and it sounds nice enough to the marketing team... and the story although loosely (or very loosely) followed is unique enough to buy rather than paying someone to make a facsimile of the story without being the story lol... (no need for defense lawyers if you buy the rights to it.) I am not sure as to the real numbers / facts or percentages - but I doubt book sales of folks having seen a show - then wanting to buy the books - is the target reasoning to making the show in the first place. I find it doubtful its even a consideration within the planning. Unfortunately - the basics of this is - the diehard / pissed off fans - aren't enough of a concern when compared to the advertising and streaming dollars they will make from having a fantasy show to compete with the other networks fantasy shows. GoT made big money for HBO... Amazon, Netflix and others jumped on the fantasy show band wagon ... and went out at purchased rights to fantasy stories ... in hopes of getting more of that fantasy show money. If the show gets renewed... they made some money for amazon... enough for amazon to roll the dice for another season. it is a different medium - so shows will always have a hard time matching up to a book series - you have to make adjustments or changes just to get meat of the story on screen and keeping it under budgetary restraints. -d
  5. The old or existing fans of the original work are not typically the target audience… they will get more folks watching the show (and advertising) than ever were really familiar with the books. Also, they (Amazon in this case) didn’t make any money from the original works - so those fans - really sent part of the calculation. If any of the new viewers are interested to dig into the books - that’s a bonus to whomever owns those book rights - not this media version. Bottom line - they (the streaming media company)make money doing it this way - and the small fraction of disgruntled book fans don’t really register in these calculations.
  6. that is an awesome perspective ... the different turning of the wheel - I love that explanation. I have not read the books - and don't intend to. -d
  7. This is pretty much the majority of what is done these days -big money media company buys rights to something - and do what they will with it (regardless of initial fan base) (looking at you Disney). they get it “wrong” most of the time according to the diehard fans. but it’s really another type of media - and the aim is to draw in fans who may never had heard of the original work. It’s a new version- and it is for a new audience… If the original content owner didn’t want to cash in on the creation… It wouldn’t have gotten purchased and remade. -d
  8. I have the played a couple demos with the rules - I have yet to try out the new expansion tho. It is fun - solo game - entertaining. Model agnostic - so you can pretty much pay it with whatever you have on hand. -d

    Reign in Hell

I picked it up.. looks fun ... and I subscribe to tabletop minions v-blog and stuff. I am pretty sure Gorilla Miniature games has done a bat-rep. I am pretty sure its only 5-8 minis ... -d
  10. They had a Bolt Action Game day out here in Aurora - the guy (my possible future in-law(sons girlfriends father))... was hosting out at the Grange Hall. I checked it out for a few hours and picked up my island assault box set. Looks like he is planning on having a monthly Game Day / Fun Tournament - next one in January. I asked if he posted anything here on Ordo about it... and he had not. So in the future I will make sure to post up when the next game days are scheduled. -d
  11. I am planning to show up to check out the fun - I have not played SAGA but I have been working on a Norman and a Viking force to try and convince some family to play lol. -d
  12. COOL - Ok - will think about how to use them. I believe there are 4 retainers in the blister so a Hearthguard unit would be a good option. - hmmm on second glance I think I may only have 3 retainers - but I will do something to round that up to 4 if needed. -d
  13. GW is a marketing ran machine - money is in constantly rolling out new and better stuff - and constantly angling for that monthly disposable income. It hasn't been about a great game system in a long long time. I listened to a couple interviews of old GW game designers whom have moved on over a decade now ... the battle with game systems vs marketing has always been a thing - and eventually as GW has grown has been more and more dominated by marketing and the bottom line - over game balance. GW knows what it is doing... they have been doing it a long time. Things are right where they want them.
  14. I only have one question currently, I picked up some Normans Box (4pts) and some extra blisters of Norman Spearmen to get my force to 6pts max. I picked up a Duke and Retainers on eBay ... I am guessing he can replace my warlord which is mounted in the Norman box - as an option. But how do I deal with the retainers? I looked for rules but found nothing about retainers - aside from possibly bodyguards? Also, to I mount the retainers on the same base as the Duke or on separate bases? -d
  15. Pulled down my box of normans to assemble and prime. The box says 4 points - I will add a levy of spearmen / javelins possibly. Still not sure if I could have them all ready for the tourney. But the event sure has me interested in getting an army going. -d
  16. I just see it as entertainment - basic high fantasy tropes ... I didn't read the books - I don't care for over explaining by an author/creator in any medium actually. The book is different from a video series - it has to be. I would not consider them incompatible - but it is hard to mesh ideas from one medium to another. I don't connect the book series and this TV series - because I didn't read the books. But so far it is pretty typical high fantasy stuff - it isn't hard to follow. And unless your constantly comparing it to a book series written decades ago... it is just as good as any other fantasy show produced by a media conglomerate looking to get eyes on their media and advertising dollars. Amazon wanted a fantasy show to compete with its rivals - and snapped up the rights to Wheel of Time - probably purely for name recognition. Probably not as a fan of WoT serving measure - but rather the obvious eyes on screens reasons. It is what it is... enjoy it for the geek serving fantasy tv that it is...( "here we are now... entertain us...") just stop worrying about why it isn't enjoyable. - it isn't the books - ok I get it. Is it YA or NOT? does it matter? The show feels slightly CW (weak acting / shaky if not typical fantasy plot - pretty faces - a bit of off the shelf CGI) - I am waiting to be amazed by the show... (not holding my breath) - but I will enjoy it for what it is and not what it isn't. - I rambled... sorry -d
  17. Hmmm I dove in - ordering the island invasion box - (son will be doing the Japanese- and I’ll take on the marines). So i a week or so I’ll have the box.
  18. never read the books (never on my radar - or my particular genre)... but so far it feels like a CW show (poor plots/writing / shallow characters and weak acting).. I don't care for several of the actors / actresses ... feels very formulaic (as most fantasy seems these days). I don't know - my wife seems to enjoy it - we will probably watch it as filler while we wait for other stuff to stream. -d
  19. hmmm I will add this to my calendar ... at least to drop in to see the gamed played. I am pretty sure my plate is too full to try and get a force ready. -d
  20. I’ve picked the books up (main rules and first supplement. But have yet to get to play it.
  21. I JUSt picked this printer up... hoping to get it set up and functioning this weekend. I will be replacing my older photon S - looks like a solid machine so far. - just out of the box last night. -d
  22. Ok - I decided to pick up the Mars 2 ... mostly because of the machine size and overall cost reasons. And thinking that I will probably jump into a larger printer in another year if I feel the need for that later. The sub 300$ price was nice - and I picked the wash and cure station - just to make things that much more painless lol. It will be a nice jump up from my Photon S. The Photon S I will be selling for 125$ - with some resin - the original packaging / docs - etc and some extra FEP. It also has the build plate leveling aftermarket set up - but I will include all the older parts for the stock leveling set up. Contact me if interested - can meet up anywhere in the Portland Metroplex to hand it off. -d
  23. I have started picking up mini's (Perry box of brits) and a few other things on MyMini Factory to get going on an army soon. I think this will be a good Rainy winter project. -d
  24. After a bit of time riding the fence - I am getting ready to upgrade my resin printer situation. I currently have an Anycubic Photon S - and I want to upgrade to a 4k machine with a mono LCD. Also, wanting a bigger print area. Leading my pick is the Saturn ... although I am wondering if the Mono X is a good move as well. Aside from the ~1.5" Z hight difference in favor of the Mono X... what else should I be considering? Based on reviews and side by side comparisons I am 80% go on the Elegoo Saturn as my upgrade path. Anyone have experience with the Saturn first hand or even better both machines? -d * I will be looking to sell my Photon S as well when I settle on the replacement (thinking ~$100)
  25. check MyMinifactory - lots of good stuff there for bases
