illbillya
Heres a fun poll for everyone. Which of the three sound files I attached sounds most like a lasrifle shot? Laser Shot 1.mp3 Laser Shot 3.mp3 Laser Shot 8.mp3

WestRider
A laser that was effective in combat would actually make some noise. It's just that it would originate from the target, as a chunk of armour/clothing/gear/flesh burns away fast enough to be considered a minor explosion.
intrizic
http://gizmodo.com/holy-crap-this-real-life-laser-rifle-cuts-through-meta-1417295883 No sounds, except for the air used to push the slag out of the way
WestRider
That's not a laser rifle, that's a laser cutting torch. Guest
Just occurred to me that a laser gun isn't legally a firearm, at least, not in oregon. Going to be quite the mess changing the laws on what qualifies as a gun if these things ever start catching on (you know, for duck hunting...). -Pax
illbillya
No sound at all is awesome for combat but bad for videos. So if you were watching a video which would you pick?

Guest
No sound at all is awesome for combat but bad for videos. So if you were watching a video which would you pick? Ah, forgot who was asking the question. For a video, hmmm. I've heard lasers described as having a sound from the vacuum they create after their beam fires. I imagine it would sound like a sharp intake of air. I don't really think this is how lasers function, but for a sound effect, it should do the trick. Get an air hose and record the sound of the air shooting out - the more PSI, the better. As for the sounds, I'm too paranoid to download the linked MP3s to know what they sound like. -Pax
WestRider
Oh, I forgot. There's at least one semi-canon source (A Dan Abnett story) that describes Lasgun fire as a flat crack, not nearly as loud or penetrating as would be expected.
intrizic
After all me going chop choo choo in a high squeaky voice won't cut it. that's not necessarily true, I would have to hear to make that call..... :D

Project Rho on Combat Lasers: http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/sidearmenergy.php#id--Laser_Beam what is this kibble, I give you an honest to goodness laser weapon and you give me a sci-fi source? There's at least one semi-canon source (A Dan Abnett story) that describes Lasgun fire as a flat crack, not nearly as loud or penetrating as would be expected. He describes it as a whip-crack. That's how I've always thought of it.
Guest
You gave me a laser cutting torch. I ain't seen no laser weapons posted here yet. To be fair, what makes it a weapon is intention. I'm sure you could make the laser cutting torch a weapon in the right circumstances. -Pax
illbillya
This is all great input. We really don't have the set up to do our own sound effects from scratch yet so were working with what we can find on the web. If there are any sound designers out there that want to help build the fx library that would rock. This is deffinetly a great conversation though. VonVilkee
I always thought the whip crack, abnett described, was more the mechanism that converted the power from the pack to a beam to shoot. The tech itself made no noise the imperium added the noise to make the grunt feel better and give him something to count. The whip crack being reminiscent of actual fire arms. Justjokin
Have you ever stuck a microphone inside of an extended slinky and tapped it? It sounds like a whole laser battle! (If they made sounds).

Read the section I linked at Project Rho. They go a bit into the physics of the matter, and conclude that if you're using a laser that's going to do a significant amount of damage in a quick enough time to use as a gun rather than as a cutting beam, the results at the other end are going to be explosive, to at least some extent.
