andy
Any suggestions on where to go to get good quality, yet affordable, bookshelves in Vancouver/Portland? Doesn't have to be fancy, actually quite the opposite desired. Ikea is right out -- I've already bought, and subsequently replaced, enough compressed paper furniture.
Purajh
I am a big fan of build your own, you can make some decent shelves out of plywood and the right jigs. Just depends on how much work you want to put into it.
VonVilkee
If you are not a carpenter... Ie me, making your own is still possible... I really liked plywood (home depot will use their big saw to cut a 4x8 into 8 pieces!, if you ask) then I got a 2x whatever height you want get it like 10 ft long price it out point is you take cuts out. Your chop cuts are the front to back while the milled big edge is the rise. No super specific cuts needed! I also used self drilling deck screws to then build them works great for my gaming storage! andy
Thanks for the suggestion. I've got the tools and have built furniture before. But in this case, I just want to buy some nice shelves for my books.

InfestedKerrigan
You're in Portcouver? I'd be hitting the nicer boroughs Goodwills and St Vincents haaaard, if I were you.
sorienor
Thrift stores: goodwill, etc. Sometimes they need work but taking it apart, using carpenter's glue on the joints and then putting it back together will do wonders. In fact I just got one out of the dumpster area of my apartments and did just that ;)
andy
There's a Goodwill on my way home. Fine suggestion, thanks!
Duckman
Keep in mind also that not all furniture at Ikea is particleboard. I'm still using a hardwood desk from Ikea that is about 20 years old now. The key is too look at the manufacturers. BILLY shelves are all particleboard. HEMNES on the other hand is a hardwood line. It may not suit your tastes and it is more expensive than the particleboard stuff but you can find some decent stuff at Ikea if it suits your tastes.
Brick Bungalow
I like habitat for humanity, city liquidators or the goodwill bulk outlets for this stuff. If you need new gear or something in uniform multiples I still rely on ikea... as was mentioned you can get steel or hardwood units there. andy
So.....what'd ya find? Ordo to the rescue! I got a PM from Mr. Bigglesworth, who had a bookshelf he no longer needed. Now I have a bookshelf, and he's got a bookshelf-sized empty space and some scratch.
