  1. I am jumping into 8th edition after not playing 40k for many years in the hopes that I may regain the love for this game. I've always been a fan of this universe and the stories involving the Inquisition. Long ago I played Grey Knights (before they were good). This time around I'm switching to Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch. The plan so far is to have a puritan Xenos Inquisitor with some hangers-on acolytes or psykers; an assassin of some sort, and a primary force of Deathwatch marines. All of these are going to be built for fun as I don't play tournaments. The Rule of Cool is number one for this army. With that in mind, I won't be including any Primaris marines but all of my Deathwatch marines are going to be converted from Primaris models to be true scale in comparison to the humans in the army. First few test models are built including a couple of assassins. 1st Lt. Brother Justinius of the Ultramarines Brother Sturm of the Crimson Fists Brother Chardon of the Lamentors Calexus assassin Eversor assassin Some more building and painting to come.

  2. So your position is that if I have a hive tyrant, I have to pay for the 2 pairs of Monstrous scything talons (41 points) and then replace both sets with ranged weapon say four deathspitters with slimer magots (40 pts). Artificially inflating the Tyrants points by 41 points? I do believe that is wrong. Why would anyone swap weapons if you had to pay the price of the weapon you're swapping out?

  3. I'm clearing out a ton of redundant bits sprues and various other things. I'll be dropping the first tote off at WOW this Sunday afternoon for anyone interested. Mostly Imperial and Ork sprues, but there is a small Tau force in this first batch. Don't ask me what's in it, go see for yourself and throw the club a couple of bucks while you're at it.

  4. Alpha Squad is built save for gap filling and cleaning.

  6. So the replace is for power level... in points you only pay for the wargear the model is equipped with, if it has been replaced you are no longer equipped with it (extrapolation) and don't pay points... codex xenos pg 130 but it says pay points for equipped stuff under every faction heading I've looked at.

  7. I think you missed my point. Being able to fine tune weapons and units separately is a bonus, but it's only easy to do if you either pay for weapons separately in all instances, or you don't. The sometimes you pay for weapons, sometimes they're included means they've created an arbitrary divide. It is literally impossible for them to create a unit in the future that has a choice of paid for weapons and built-in cost weapons, that is costed appropriately. Continuing with my previous example, a raider has a choice of a 20 point dark lance, and a 30 point disintegrator cannon. If they wanted to come out with a "heavy raider" that could choose between a 0 point void lance and a 30 point disintegrator, then there is no appropriate points cost for that vehicle they could choose. They would have 4 options: 1) under-cost the platform assuming it would choose the disintegrator 2) over-cost it assuming it would take the void lance 3) change the cost of the void lance AND the void raven bomber to reflect their separate values 4) (and most likely) decide not to make the unit at all, because combining their 2 mutually exclusive pricing philosophies is problematic. There is no upside to having two mutually exclusive pricing philosophies I'm the same game, much less the same army. All it does is artificially constrain future design space. Choose one philosophy and stick to it.

  8. For learning the game power level is probably easiest. Then once you get the basics down, switch to points.

  9. Last two infantry models done. Now on to basing. LRC is still in my wife's hands. So close!

  12. Played Fluger Last night. 1k Nids vs IG 1. Genestealers are FAST! 2. Broodlords are a BEAST! 3. The new character shooting thing is interesting. We forgot about not shooting characters and Old One Eye died on turn three to massed lascannon fire. He should have lived longer, but we forgot, and in 7th edition it was good target priority... 4. Falling back to allow others to shoot melee units is mean. 5. Multi- assaults to tie up shooting squads is ace!

  13. For the rest of you, Crashprone has the best Wotan battle reports. They are art. He is under the Guardian Games banner for the Stores in Wotan. @crashprone I went Haqq this year. To better learn the game, I thought I needed to try a new faction. Haqq was a close second choice when Instarted collecting models, so Red Veil made the decision easy. As luck would have it, I am a better Haqq player than Nomad Player. After OFCC, I may switch back, but I have yet to exhaust my options with them. I hope to see you soon!

  14. Raindog! Long time! Thanks for the compliment on my battle report on Strikezone. When did you betray your Nomad comrades and join Haqq?! (I say while sliding the Haqq contents of Operation Red Veil into a drawer). Wish I could play with you guys more often, but my game group usually meets Thursdays and weekends are rough for me. I'll keep an eye out though! I'll take a look at my schedule for July. Maybe I can make it to OFCC after all! Anyway, good luck in Wotan commander! I just managed to evict some filthy Pan O from the Don Peyote. I'm glad you were able to eject some Yu Jing on the same ship!

  16. Yah that would be fine too, I think most people would be fine with any format as long as we get to have a few beers and throw down some dice.

  17. Played a good learning game last night at Oregon City Geeks & Games. A friend of mine lent me his british stuff to use, 120 pts wysiwyg. Had a basic infantry company, a basic crusader II company (with a grant platoon), a full Honey Stuart company (with a grant platoon), 25 pdr arty, OP stuart, and a couple Hurricanes. That,s a lot of stuff especially now that HQ are considered platoons. The game I played was against mostly uparmored PzIII, arty, inf plt, couple 8rads and a couple 88s. 1) Airplanes did alright, they were able to get on board 50% and they did knock out the 88s and a PzIII. you have to have 2x airplanes and the wave off is not measured 16" from friendly troops to airplane but 8" from friendly troops to targeted teams allowing planes to operate closer to friendly troops. those huricanes were fun to use. 2) Was surprised to see the stuart being slower than the crusaders (as far as tactical move & shoot ability). But on the "Dash" moves, the stuart is faster. 3) platoon morale check after being shot at is now done during the players opening turn after teams have a chance to bail-in, un-bog etc (not after they were shot at and again on your turn when you are below strength). Now these Brits I was using are formed into 3x team platoons. After 2 tanks are knocked out they have to start rolling for morale and the Brit built in morale is 5+ which makes them run easily, but they are cheaper and therefore more platoons so you don't lose your entire army to a dice roll. 4) Artillery, yeah I know that they neutered its ability to kill tanks. In V3 the game did favor infantry and allowed anything to kill tanks causing the metagame to evolve into mostly infantry companies at tournaments and making it very hard for tank companies to compete. This is why I agree with pairing down the arty. But ranged in token placement is better since it doesn't have to be on a team, you can place that marker anywhere, and Mortars also get ranged in token. All in all the game was still fun, still same amount of time, just a different flavor. I did win the game, not by taking objectives but by forcing company morale which they couldn't make because the Huricanes blasted his only CIC. Since I am mostly a "Beer & Pretzles" type of player (meaning I don't get uber tourny competetive just playing a game) this new V4 is no problem & makes some things more fun rather than work. Will be playing more.

  20. Grenade rules only single model in unit can use them at any given time...

  21. I'm no help there. At first they handled it by not having points. Then they did something else. That's the length and breadth of my AoS knowledge.
    1 point
  22. Fair enough. I just think when they update points, they are going to update the whole thing. And any new units will come with that (generally a codex release). How did AOS handle it?

  23. 3) change the cost of the void lance AND the void raven bomber to reflect their separate values I think that's the most likely.

  24. Fair enough. That is a solid option 5. Still would have been unnecessary if they'd just stuck with one design philosophy. Oh well, not a big deal, just a little head-scratchy.

  25. I like the Power Level system as long as no one's trying to abuse it. So, friendly games where there's no reason for anyone to abuse it. But it heavily favours Units with lots of Wargear upgrades available over Units that don't really have many options other than adding Models, if you put effort into abusing it. The Matched Play Points System is probably the better choice for competitive environments. Part of the reason that the AoS system works better than Power Levels do for 40K is that most Units in AoS have fewer options, and fewer still that aren't "standard" option. I don't think there's anything that has the kind of wildly swinging range of power based on upgrades that, say, DeathWatch Marines or Inquisitorial Acolytes or Renegade Knights, have.

  26. Glad you approve, I think it was (rightly) hard for many to justify the cost for a one-day gg + small events the second day, unfortunately we have to pay for the space for both days regardless so might as well go big and leave the fun side events for Saturday night. Still I think it's good value for the cost, two lunches included (you wouldn't spend less than $15/meal at the venue, probably more), and Canadian dollars to boot!

  28. I disagree with you here. I think it's a fantastic bit of "future proofing," and that potential future revisions is exactly why they've separated the two. They will be able to fine tune the point values of units and weapons separately, so a change to one unit that can carry a dark lance won't require a cascading series of changes to everything else that can potentially carry it. On the plus side, you no longer need to pay for the standard issue gear on models that "swap" for something else. For example, the ubiquitous "heavy weapon guy" in a squad only pays for his heavy weapon, not his standard gun and then his heavy weapon.

  29. Played vs Pumpkinhead last night. 1k Nids vs IG. 1. Ogryns are good, but broodlords MULCH multipoint units. 2. Lascannons are great at doing damage to multipoint models. 3. Venomthropes and Zoanthropes seem great. 4. Genestealers are scary. 5. Hanaur is right, the inability to finish off units is a thing. Figuring out when to fall back and when not to is going to be key.

  30. A bit of warning: I bought the iBooks enhanced edition of the Index Xenos 2, thinking it'd be pretty-much a straight digital implementation of the physical book, but with maybe a couple of 360-degree model photos or somesuch. Unfortunately, GW went all-in on the capabilities of the medium, and instead of presenting each unit's weapons & capabilities as simple stat-blocks (like they did in the physical book) they put all the crunchy bits in as cascading hot links -- so instead of just glancing at a unit's page for specific details during play, you have to click through one or more links. Super aggravating.

  31. I ended up getting the Chaos enhanced edition even though I had the Imp1 Standard tablet one,,wanted to see the differences. Enhanced is nice for list building but yeah,,the link spam can get annoying at times,,in the long run most will have those weapon stats memorized anyway.Since I use Android and IoS,,ill probably just stick with the epub/IoS standard issues.

  37. That's what I was thinking the loss of heavy armor 4+ save for them totally changes how I should use the deck hands... second liners who use a burst of speed to slip around screens maybe as the nobs batter at the screens. I'm thinking those boyz should have tried avoiding the plague bearers and attacked the grinder... all the possibilities I'm loving the basic list concept now to tweak!

  38. I hope so! In the meantime, I'm going to work on a Glottkin Renegade Knight conversion. Foulspawn will rise again! Also, I just realized that Spawn are 4 wounds. I played them last game as 3. Doh!

  40. Well, actually-actually, "Primaris" is complete doggerel as is most of Games Workshop's "High Gothic" pseudo-Latin. Prīmāriīs is the dative masculine plural of the word that I think GW was going for: Prīmārius (which is the masculine nominative first/second declension). It means roughly "one of the first," and was once used as was used as the title of a position in European universities.

  41. But he is sticking his leg out Willy nilly. That's the pose. Shooting sideways with one hand, opposite hand at the waist and turned out. Right leg stepping wide, left leg holding the weight. As a shooter, I'm sure you can agree that this is terrible form. The icing on the cake is the cape billowing towards the pistol as it always does with models in this pose.

  42. Another squad done. Painted the washers on the bottom of everyone so that's done. One Chaplain, one Libby and my wife is doing the LRC and that is done. Then it's basing, on to the Sisters and, if I have time, coming back to touch up some of the colors that need it.

  45. I played Joel and Seth tonight. We played the Hunting Party Mission on my table. I won initiative and had Joel set up to the right. He had me go first. The game lasted one turn. He hid, so I pressed the game. Ny Muyibs took tower and went into suppressive fire. The Ghulams went up the long gantry and won every firefight. The Ranger went down, then the Grunt HMG, two Mavericks, and the rest of the Grunt team. Joel started his first turn in retreat with this in his dead pool. I failed to hunt anything, but Joel had a minimum of specialists, so there were few targets.

  46. Played a game against myself because that's what you do! Two very flugerian armies staring at each other. 1. 9" bubble is actually hard to get through for late game arrivals. Makes it pretty easy to wall off most of your deployment zone. 2. Ogryns are real bullies. 3. Ratlings are very scary, but easy to remove. Snipers seem to be something TAC lists should consider. 4. Not having to worry about spacing is such a relief. 5. Its REALLY hard to kill vehicles now.
