Aldnoah Zero (1st season): 4/10

Anime. Rating would be higher (7/10), but for a very bad ending. Villains were more evil than was needed to justify the plot (pet peeve). No character development beyond the first episode. As for a description, it's sort of a rip-off of Chronicles of Riddick, but without Riddick and instead a child militia which is all too typical in anime. There is another season, which may make it more impressive as a series, but that season isn't on Netflix.

Netflix with subtitles or dubbing: 1/10

Just horrible subtitles. Subtitles greatly differ from the dubbed version (which they allow both the subs and the dubs on the same track...). No subtitles for written material within the show (like letters or signs), instead you are given awkward gaps in the plot if a character is sent mail. Subs and dubs attempt to use slang to translate foreign concepts, but botch it and leave the plot spotty.

As for my rating system, anything under 5/10 is something I regret watching. 5/10 is neutral, and 6 or higher is something that I enjoyed, even if it isn't always amazing cinematography.

I'm watching the first 2 seasons of Black Sails (one disc into Season 2) and it is absolutely delightful. Awesome pirate skullduggery and intrigue, with enough soap opera drama to keep me feeling guilty, but enough genuinely good plot twists and mystery to keep me interested. Love it. Starz does a really good job with their shows. Spartacus was great, Black Sails is also great, but in a less violent man-porn way.

Also, every time I have an Amazon Prime membership I watch both seasons of Band of Brothers at least once. Both seasons are different, but together I think they comprise the best television I have ever seen.

just finished the Expanse first 4 as well… very good stuff… loving the new direction from Sci-fi.  Hoping they keep it up.

Jessica Jones - loved it… looking forward to more of these Netflix Marvel stuff.  someday the defenders!

Getting into Dark Matter - so far we are enjoying it… about 5 shows in.

Fargo season 2… was great fun - loved it.  If you enjoyed the first season - this one was just as good.  Looking forward to season 3 - but I think it will not be out till 2017 according to rumors.

Started in on "The IT Crowd" on netflix (bbc show about 10 years old?)  so far good laughs at half hour blocks.

Ash vs. Evil Dead… BEST… fun… love this show so far.  only minus for me is its only 25 minutes long…ugh never enough.

Jessica Jones - Binge-watched this one last week, and enjoyed it for the most part. I don't think it was near as good as Daredevil, but it was definitely worth watching.  Best part for me was seeing a certain character from Daredevil show up for an episode or two, and drop a few hints about the Man Without Fear. It's really rounding up nicely to the point that Netflix -could- eventually pull off The Defenders, which I hope they do. But time will tell.

David Tenant as Kilgrave... I just didn't really buy into it. Not just because he's forever 'Dr. Who' to me, but the character itself just didn't give me the impression that he was a real danger to Jessica. So much of what he did was predictable, TOO predictable.

I did love Carrie Moss as the selfish high-end attorney, and hope she returns next season.

Overall, not good enough for me to watch through again, but good enough to be on the lookout for season 2.

6.5/10

He's the only reason I watched the show. Jessica was a poorly realized character, but I really liked Kilgrave.

I keep forgetting to post shows I've completed:

NCIS: Seasons 1-7: Someone suggested that CIS is a rip off of this show and that forensic guys with guns makes more sense with this show's setting. They are right. I enjoy the show. It's nothing amazing, nor was CSI, but it is enjoyable. Maybe 6/10, I enjoyed it and didn't waste my time, but it isn't anything special or amazing. A good slayer of time....

Tears to Tiara: Thought I had already seen this one, but I guess I hadn't. 6/10. Decent. Probably won't watch again, but I enjoyed it.

Utawarerumono: Second time watching it. I like this one, they did a very good job. Mind you, I like the plot. Compelling and well executed. It's anime and the animation is not very impressive. 7/10 (despite lacking animation). I will watch again.

Kilgrave is predictable for two reasons. One, up until Jessica left him, he had never, since the age of 10, not been able to simply do anything he wanted to. He'd never had to scheme and scam and plan. He'd always just been able to do whatever he wanted, tell people to do or give him whatever he wanted.

Two, a lot of what he does is archetypal abuser behaviour. It's predictable from the outside because it fits patterns we've seen so many times before. From the receiving end, tho, the way it's been set up with all the gaslighting and other control techniques, it can still catch someone off guard.

As someone who's been through some serious emotional abuse and gaslighting (not in a romantic relationship, but the patterns are the same), I've gotta say, they absolutely nailed both Kilgrave's actions and Jessica's reactions.

On a semi-related note, I just started Daredevil, and basically my first reaction was "Wow. I have WAY more sympathy for down-on-their-luck PIs than down-on-their-luck lawyers." ;)

Daredevil. Kinda meh, honestly. For all its dark and gritty aesthetic, it didn't actually update the character at all, as the MCU did with those characters. In its essence, it's still just a 1964 super-hero story, not taking advantage or heed of any of the analysis and growth that the genre's gone through since then. Still full of holes and unexamined issues and overly-simplified Comics Code Authority morality. I might have liked it better if I'd watched it before Jessica Jones, but I couldn't help contrasting them, and Daredevil just always came up wanting in the comparison. JJ isn't perfect by any means, but it's a 21st century story, one that's relevant to the life I live, not one that's relevant to a time almost 20 years before I was born.
